“But it's like Sensei said. Our real power doesn't come from our hands, it comes from inside here. This is Lloyd we're talking about. This is one mission we cannot fail.”
Kai to the ninja, "Ghost Story"

The fifth season of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, subtitled Possession, is preceded by Season 4 and succeeded by Season 6. Though Lloyd is the mascot character, the focus character is unclear and up for interpretation. Morro serves as the main antagonist, and the Ghost Warriors are the villainous faction of the season.

Official description[]

A grieving Lloyd is possessed by the ghost of Morro – the Master of Wind and Wu’s first student. In Lloyd’s body, Morro renders the other ninja powerless before stealing Wu’s staff. It contains three hidden symbols, the path to finding the Tomb of First Spinjitzu Master. Wu knows that if Morro finds the tomb, he will claim the Realm Crystal. This relic has the power to open the fabric between realms, enabling the powerful Preeminent to enter the NINJAGO world. [citation needed]

Sets[]

Despite being the ninja who was featured the least in this season, Lloyd was the mascot ninja for the sets. The collectible items were the Aeroblades. The promotional media and box art depicted a mountain setting with a darker blue color theme, though this is not a specific location seen in the season.

The sets primarily focused on ghost vehicles and ninja vehicles, and many included side builds of locations visited throughout the season (Steep Wisdom, Samurai X Cave, the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master) or ninja vehicles that did not appear in the show (Zane's glider, Jay and Kai's hover boards, Nya's speedboat and airbike).

This was the first set wave to feature Airjitzu Flyers. This wave marked the debut of the updated shuriken design, though the show retained the original design in this season.

Trivia[]

  • The Aeroblades were the collectible items featured in the season.
  • This season, along with Season 4, aired in their entirety in the same year. (Season 4 in the spring of 2015, and Season 5 in the summer of 2015). This marks the first time in the show that 2 seasons aired in the same year.[1]
  • This is the first season to:
    • Have an episode aired in Latin America before the USA. This was the case for the first episode, "Winds of Change."
    • Not to include any references to the Great Devourer.
    • Not have Serpentine since their debut in Season 1. Episode 14-19 of Season 2 revolved around the Serpentine and Lord Garmadon being their leader, the ninja cross paths with Skales and his family in Season 3, and Arcturus and the other Anacondrai warriors appeared in the very last episode of Season 4 after Garmadon's sacrifice.
    • Feature Airjitzu, as well as introducing Nya into the role of the Elemental Master of Water.
    • To have the ninja learn a martial art related to Spinjitzu, in this case, Airjitzu.
    • To cross over with another LEGO show, Legends of Chima.
    • Introduce Ronin into the series, after first being introduced in the non-canon video game LEGO Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin.
  • This season has the highest kill count of any season to date. The Preeminent, Morro, the Ghost Warriors, Garmadon, Chen, and the Anacondrai Cultists all die in "Curseworld, Part II." Cole and Clouse additionally become ghosts in this season.
  • The season reveals Kai has a fear of water (but he does not in Season 2), Jay has a fear of attics, Zane has a fear of Morro, and Cole has a fear of becoming a ghost (which he later on succumbs to).
  • This is the final season to feature the Cursed Realm until Season 11.
  • In some airings, the tune of the audio was half a semitone - a semitone lower.[citation needed]
  • In this season and the next (plus the Wu's Teas shorts), most of the details on Nya's casual wear (mainly the gold parts) seem more reflective and shiny.
  • This season shares many structural similarities to Rise of the Snakes.
    • Both seasons focus on the four original ninja racing against the main antagonists (Pythor and Morro) to seek to search for artifacts (Fangblades and the Realm Crystal) in order to unleash a greater terror on the world of Ninjago (the Great Devourer and the Preeminent).
    • The main antagonists also take advantage of Lloyd in some way to fufill their needs (Pythor tricks Lloyd and steals the Map of Dens to unleash the other Serpentine tribes; while Morro possesses Lloyd's body throughout most of the season to get the artifacts he requires).
    • Nya has an important side role in terms of her identity as a hero on the ninja team. In Rise of the Snakes, she serves as Samurai X, while in Possession, she trains to become the Water Ninja.
    • The ninja are able to master new abilities (True Potential and Airjitzu). On a side note, Nya unlocks her True Potential during the season finale.
    • A past enemy of the ninja (Garmadon and Ronin) decide to team up with them to fight against the main antagonist and villainous faction, taking on the role as an anti-hero for the seasons.
      • But the differences are, Garmadon decided to ally with the ninja out of selflessness to save Lloyd and he did not betray the ninja until after the Great Devourer's defeat. Ronin on the other hand, decided to ally with the ninja out of selfishness to find ways to pay his debts to the Soul Archer, and briefly betrayed the ninja before allying with them during and after the finale.
    • The Great Devourer and the Preeminent are summoned at the end of the penultimate episodes of their respective seasons ("The Rise of the Great Devourer" and "Curseworld, Part I") and attack the cities the ninja are defending following the respective final episodes (Ninjago City in "Day of the Great Devourer" and Stiix in "Curseworld, Part II").
    • Finally, the Great Devourer and the Preeminent are destroyed by someone using Elemental Powers (the Great Devourer is killed by Garmadon using the combined powers of the Golden Weapons while Nya uses her True Potential to drown the Preeminent into the Endless Sea).

Focus characters[]

Protagonists[]

  • This season's focus character is up to the interpretation of the viewer, although Lloyd is the mascot of this season.[2][3]
  • Cole has a larger role in this season due to becoming a ghost.
    • Cole was focused on in Episodes 48 and 49.
      • In Episode 48, Cole made a sacrifice in retrieving the Scroll of Airjitzu, where he was transformed into a ghost.
      • Cole struggles to accept his new body in Episode 49, but has enough courage to continue and learns of his new abilities.
      • Cole remained a ghost throughout all of Season 6 and the majority of "Day of the Departed."
  • Kai continues his larger role from the previous season due to his promise to always be there for Lloyd after Master Garmadon’s banishment to the Cursed Realm.
    • Kai was focused on in Episodes 46 and 50.
      • In Episode 46, Kai vowed to lead the ninja team after the absence of Lloyd.
      • In Episode 50, Kai fought Morro who held the Sword of Sanctuary. However, through Lloyd's voice, Kai was able to retrieve the sword and give the ninja the upper hand.
      • Kai also gave Morro the Realm Crystal in Episode 52 after Morro threatened the ninja with Lloyd.
  • Lloyd had a mixed role in this season. He had a minor role in Episodes 46-52, as he only made a few appearances.
    • However, he was focused on in Episodes 45 and 54.
      • In Episode 45, Lloyd had a short battle with Morro before being taken over by the ghost.
      • Lloyd fought Morro in Episode 54 after he said a final goodbye to his father, as well as used the Realm Crystal to travel to different realms during the battle.
  • Nya has a bigger role in this season than the previous ones. Her story in becoming a Ninja is another important plot for this season.
    • In Episode 47, she begun her training to become the Water Ninja, where she eventually gives up.
    • Nya finally unlocks her True Potential in Episode 54 where she drowns the Preeminent, completely destroying the Cursed Realm, however, she wasn't the main focus.
  • Sensei Wu had his first major role since the Pilot Episodes. His relationship and backstory with Morro is a great focus in Episodes 46, 53 and 54.
  • Jay and Zane's roles this season were minor compared to the other ninja.
  • P.I.X.A.L. made a few appearances, behind Zane, in episodes 45, 47, 49, and 54.
  • This season introduces the character of Ronin, who would go on to be an anti-hero and ally to the ninja in following seasons.
  • Skylor made a brief appearance in episode 53.
  • Sensei Garmadon made a brief appearance in episode 54. This was his last appearance as his Master form and his last appearance until "Dread on Arrival."
  • Misako had a bigger role than previous seasons, first helping Wu with the tea farm, then decoding the staff's clues to help the ninja get Lloyd back, and helping Nya train.
    • This was the first and only season so far to feature Misako in every episode.
  • This season featured the team only consisting of the original ninja, Kai, Jay, Zane, and Cole, which hasn't been seen since Season 1: Rise of the Snakes.

Antagonists[]

  • Morro served as the main antagonist of this season.[4] His relationship with Wu and his quest to curse Ninjago are vital to the whole season.
  • Soul Archer served as the secondary antagonist of this season.
  • The Preeminent, despite only appearing briefly in episodes 50 and 53 before making a full-fledged appearance in episode 54, and her release from being imprisoned in an alternate dimension would be the driving force behind her right-hand Morro's quest for the Realm Crystal. As such, she served as the overarching antagonist of this season.
    • She is the second physically largest enemy the ninja had battled since the Great Devourer in Season 1.
  • Other important antagonists include Bansha, Ghoultar, Wrayth, Morro's dragon, and Fenwick (episode 50).
  • Ronin was a thief and was not a friend of the ninja, but he sided with them starting from the end of episode 51.
  • Master Chen and Clouse made cameos in episode 54, imprisoned in the Cursed Realm. This was Chen's last appearance until "Day of the Daparted", while Clouse returned in the next season.
  • The Ghost Warriors were the villainous faction of this season.
