Designer's notes[]
After finishing Ninjago City Gardens I was looking for a different challenge - and the Ultra Sonic Raider would become just that: A combiner vehicle that had to pay hommage to an icon of Ninjago history while also bringing something new to the table. Oh, and not to mention a global pandemic that meant designing this largely from home!
Leonardo Lopez conveniently had a half-built sketch model sitting around but it being more of a styling exercise than a working prototype only the wing design, the color scheme, and the idea of using the X-Wing canopies survived. It gave me a starting point though, and I quickly arrived at the Eurocopter Tiger- style double-canopy configuration that makes for an aggressive and sleek design.
Most of the time though was spent on mechanisms and getting the various components to come together in a satisfying and stable way. The bikes slide into axle holders from the back, and the jet attaches in a similar fashion so that while playing the forces applied to it actually support the structure. The wing function took weeks to get right - ball joints and linkages are fickle but once we got it to work it made for a satisfying and big transformation! And I didn't even mention the bike that creates the core of it all!
I'm really happy that we were able to include a vehicle for each of the ninja. The side-cars were a tough sell on the team but when we finally solved them, it created such a satisfying and complete package that will likely provide hours of play.

Trivia[]
- This set is a Legacy remake of 9449 Ultra Sonic Raider. In spite of this, much of the design appears more inspired by 70595 Ultra Stealth Raider, the upgraded version of the vehicle;
- The build is altered to make space for the four ninja, it is bulkier and the cockpits are different, and it lacks the small sais on the sides, as well as the sections to place the Golden Weapons.
- The transformation feature is closer to the 2016 variant, having the middle section form into a bike and each tread becoming separate vehicles.
- Legacy Mezmo and Golden Legacy Zane are exclusive to this set.
- This is the third iteration of the vehicle. Much like the last two;
- It includes a variant of the four original ninja.
- It includes at least one Serpentine minifigure.
- Unlike the last two, this is the first iteration not to include an Anacondrai adjacent minifgure.
- This is the fourth Ninjago set to include two minifigure variants of the same character, including Zane in his Legacy (Dragon) and Golden Legacy suits, and the only Ninjago Legacy set released in 2021 with this characteristic.
- The first 3 sets were the Arcade Pods released in 2020 as part of Prime Empire line.
- This set includes an altered version of the Constrictai Fangblade.
- A shadow of the Great Devourer appears on the box art.
- Despite the box claiming to be based on Season 1/2, both Zane minifigures have his titanium head.
- This is the third Legacy set to include all four 2019 Golden Weapons, the other two being 70670 Monastery of Spinjitzu and 71705 Destiny's Bounty.
- On the backside of the box, the silhouette of the Golden Legacy Nya minifigure has a 2012 mask piece instead of her hair and a bandana mask piece.
- A couple of the stickers for the vehicle feature the Secret Ninja Force logo.
