Designer's notes[]
The one that pioneered the SCCBS system!
We got the brief for what our leadership had in mind for 2022. We were asked to come up with a line of Ninjago that would not only stand on its own without content but also be the epitome of Ninjago toys and a great introduction for new kids. After the specialized launches like Prime Empire and Seabound, the markets asked for a wave with the classic Ninjago identity. We would not get any story continuing content in order to make sure we could get started on 2HY 2022 as early as possible. Thus, Core was born.
In order to ensure an appropriate building experience for the 6+ agemark we started a lot of model and element concepts to explore the 3 cornerstones of Ninjago: Vehicles, dragons and mechs.
We made a new limb element that would allow kids to build their own mech relatively simply as well as create a skeleton to upgrade with regular system elements and a newly developed shell piece.
I cannot overstate how much I love this set and the effect it has had on mech and creature building in LEGO products. Being able to make toys that are truly appropriate building and play experiences is super rewarding.

Trivia[]
- This is the second Ninjago: Core set to feature a mech, the others being 71757 Lloyd's Ninja Mech and 71767 Ninja Dojo Temple.
- All the three mechs share similarities, with all of them being of nearly the same size, having a circle with a special symbol on the front side of their cabins, and the heads of the ninja themselves being served as the heads of their mechs, as well as Zane and Kai's mechs both having a katana and a shield in their right and left hands, respectively.
- This set is similar to the Nexo Knights Battle Suit sets, especially 70366 Battle Suit Lance.
