Designer's notes[]
"Set number 7! This one will forever hold a special place in my heart!! In the usual design process, we get handed a brief with a somewhat fixed concept already, but this set came from a bit of an open brief. We know that Ninjago has been running for so many years by now, a lot of the fans that grew up with the show has become young adults/adults by now (I mean, I myself was just another kiddo visiting the toy shops when Ninjago was launched!), so we were wondering if we can create something for the more up-in-age Ninjago fans as well in 2024. We didn't know what it would be, and for the longest time, we didn't even know if we are actually doing it!
While I was never put on the brief, I had the idea of creating one of these epic rock diorama (something I've been obsessing looking at for years in my free time) and put a Ninjago spin to it by turning it into a stone dragon, and I eventually got the chance to throw a sketch model together during our 1-week boost and pitch it, and luckily there was enough love and passion for the model around the office, that it managed to make its way to the shelf now! :D
When designing this set, I treated it as a love letter to Ninjago and there are 3 Easter eggs hidden in the model. The first one is the Chima Chi crystal - it was a personal choice when I put it in and it neither confirms nor denies the correlation between Ras and Chima haha - you will have to watch the show to find out! The second Easter egg is a bit more abstract - but all the hidden colourful bricks inside this models are of colours that we've used on the Master Wu and the 6 core ninja, and under the battle rock is where you actually get the colours referencing every single one of them together. The last one is my favourite, which I won't spoil here - but you will know it when you build it, and it's a reference to one of my personal favourite Ninjago seasons! ;)
I hope this model will leave an impression the same way I felt when I saw the Temple of Airjitzu and the first Ninjago City, and let people know that after 13 years, Ninjago can still bring something refreshing and unique to the table - And as always thanks to Michael for the awesome stickers and the rest of the graphics team (Angel and Renato) for the cool figures that make our models come to life, and Kirsten who worked on the building instructions. Teamwork!"[2]
Trivia[]
- The set's conception began as a MOC from designer Chi Wing Lee, and after much positive response internally, was added to the design list.[3]
- It is intended to be marketed towards an older audience, as the 13+ age marking suggests.[4]
- Lee made the set to let people know that Ninjago still had "more to offer."[5]
- It was built to evoke the feeling of 70751 Temple of Airjitzu and as the spiritual successor of 71795 Temple of the Dragon Energy Cores, which Lee also designed.[5] The printed lantern and build supports were repurposed from the latter.[6]
- The build contains a Chima Chi crystal and a hidden Teapot of Tyrahn. On the interior, only colors relating to the six classic ninja and Wu were used.[7]
- A special edition version of the set was released exclusively to members of the LEGO Ambassador Network with specialized box art and a display base. This was provided by LEGO's engagement team.[8]
- This set includes an invitation for the Tournament of the Sources. This teases a connection between the location and the tournament, which was revealed in "Enter the City of Temples."
