“He was once a great warrior who had complete mastery of Shatterspin. His devotion to the Forbidden Five was absolute, and he did his best to lead the Clan in their ways after they were gone.”

Lord Argus was a leader of the Wolf Clan after the banishment of his masters, the Forbidden Five. Although he was not an Elemental Master, he tried to perform true Shatterspin, having dedicated himself to understanding its principles. However, when he struck the Gong of Shattering to do so, he fell victim to a terrible curse which transformed him into a lycanthrope known as the Lycan King.

History[]

Background[]

Lord Argus was a great warrior of the Wolf Clan who did not have an Elemental Power. Nevertheless, he was shown to be loyal to the Forbidden Five and tried to master the true power of Shatterspin.

After the Forbidden Five were exiled, Argus became the leader of the Wolf Clan. During this time, Zaiden Kane influenced Argus, believing him to be a potential sixth member of the Forbidden Five. Argus then struck the Gong of Shattering, which unleashed a curse on the Wyldness, putting it into a state of half-existence as well as transforming the Lord into the Lycan King. The newly-formed Lycan King was put under Zaiden Kane's control as he was forced to wear the Spectral Crown. Against his will, the Lycan King attacked the wolf warriors and turned them to stone.

However, many wolf warriors survived and their descendants became the Children of the Wolf. Zaiden Kane had disappeared, and Argus continued to roam the Wyldness in his cursed form.

The Wyldness[]

The Lycan King stared down at the Children of the Wolf as they tried to wake up an unconscious Garmadon.

The Lycan King[]

The Lycan King attacked Asa after the latter picked up the Mallet of Shattering. Warby jumped on Asa and pushed them both away from the Lycan King's attack. Zuri tried to slow the Lycan King down by using a slingshot. The children ran away and the Lycan King tried to chase after them but was unable to get through the gorge. Warby and Asa taunted the beast. In retaliation, the Lycan King struck the gorge, causing it to crumble. Later, from under the rubble, the lycanthrope howled. A few moments after Garmadon performed Shatterspin and punched the rubble, the Lycan King howled again but Garmadon and the children dodged the attack.

Masters and Students[]

One night, the Lycan King was greeted by Zaiden Kane as he stalked through a field full of ruins. Enraged by the sight of his former tormentor, the Lycan King lashed out at Kane and destroyed the pillar they stood on. However, Kane avoided the blow and boasted that they would soon be reunited before flying off and laughing in the night.

Destinies[]

While stalking the Shadow Dojo, the Lycan King encountered Asa and abducted the boy. As he ran through a ruined village, the Lycan King was surprised by the appearance of Zaiden Kane, whom he immediately attempted to crush with a powerful blow. Kane, however, dodged the attack and mocked the Lycan King's plight as the latter fled to Lupindor with Asa in tow.

Homecoming[]

As rain fell across the ruined and flooded city of Lupindor, the Lycan King guarded Asa whom he laid to rest atop a throne in the Hall of Wolves. When the boy awoke from the pattering rain that made its way through the ruined hall, the Lycan King offered him a large leaf to serve as an umbrella, watching him with solemn eyes.

When Garmadon and the Children of the Wolf arrived at the ruined hall to rescue their friend, the Lycan King ferociously attacked the group. In the ensuing fight, the Children of the Wolf struck the Lycan King from all sides with Shatterspin, aiming to destroy the runes of binding that were present on his body. Unfortunately, the four had not timed their attacks in synchronization, and the runes merely reformed following their attack. Upon spotting his arch-nemesis, Zaiden Kane once more, the Lycan King prepared a petrifying howl, aimed at Kane and Asa, though the other four children shielded the two from the attack, becoming petrified instead.

As he watched his friends turn to stone, Asa briefly cried before unleashing a powerful burst of Shatterspin upon the Lycan King, striking him in the chest with such strength that he destroyed all four runes of binding while knocking the lycanthrope to the ground. Unfortunately, this was also part of Kane's plan, and once they took possession of the spectral crown, they now seized control over the Lycan King once more, mounting him as they planned to conquer the Wyldness.

Now once again under the control of Zaiden Kane, the Lycan King attacked Garmadon and Asa, pursuing them across Lupindor until the pair destroyed a stone bridge they were traversing, plunging the Lycan King and Kane into the waters below. Eventually, both beast and master were able to catch up with Garmadon and Asa at the Shadow Dojo, discovering that Asa had donned a Wolf Mask and rang the Gong of Shattering. With the true power of Shatterspin at his command, Asa attacked the Lycan King, striking him in the face, before snatching and destroying the spectral crown - an action that released its stored energies. With this, the Lycan King was vaporized alongside Asa and Zaiden, finally bringing Argus' curse and suffering to an end.

Abilities[]

  • Shatterspin: Like the wolf warriors, Argus is capable of performing the rudimentary blue form of Shatterspin that does not require a Wolf Mask powered by the Gong of Shattering.
  • Skilled combatant: Being the strongest warrior of the Wolf Clan, Argus is a formidable opponent. His lycanthrope form makes him more formidable.
  • Lycanthrope Physiology: Due to being cursed by the Gong of Shattering, Argus became a lycanthrope, a werewolf, and has the following abilities:
    • Night vision: Like a regular wolf, Argus's lycanthrope form possesses exceptional night vision, enabling him to see in dark environments like a cave or at night.
    • Superhuman strength: Argus demonstrated superhuman strength, one using Shatterspin and the other being able to smash the ground, throw trees at his opponents, and even lift them.
    • Superhuman durability/endurance: Argus has superhuman durability and endurance, as he managed to take on four rudimentary Shatterspin attacks from the Children of the Wolf.
    • Superhuman speed/agility: Despite his larger size, the Lycan King has superhuman speed and agility, being able to keep up with smaller opponents.
    • Superhuman reflexes: As the Lycan King, Argus has superhuman reflexes.
    • Sonic Scream: The Lycan King is able to produce a loud howl, similar to a sonic scream, that can cause devastation.
      • Petrification: Through his howl, the Lycan King is able to turn people to stone.
    • Longevity: Argus lived for thousands of years as a lycanthrope.
    • Nigh-Invincibility: The Lycan King is stated to be nigh-invincible as long as he wears the Spectral Crown.

Weaknesses[]

  • Spectral Crown: Argus is vulnerable to the Spectral Crown, which places him under the control of its wearer.
  • Large Size: Argus's lycanthrope form is too large to fit in places like a gorge.

Etymology[]

Argus means a hundred-eyed monster of Greek mythology or a watchful guardian. Lycan is a shortened form of lycanthrope, the capability of a person to change into a wolf or exhibit wolf-like traits.

Trivia[]

  • He is the fifth character to have the title of Lord, after Garmadon, Belgrave, Mogra, and Ras. However, he is chronologically the first, as he was alive thousands of years before the events of the series.
    • After Mogra, he is the second antagonist in a comic series to have the title of Lord.
    • Similarly, he is the second (but chronologically first) Lord to come from the Wyldness, the other one being Ras.
  • When Zaiden Kane isn’t using their staff, Lord Argus has some autonomy and memory of who he was. But if Kane exerts their power, he falls under the complete control of the Spectral Crown.[citation needed]
