“You see, the key is balance. Let your opponent fight himself. Let the enemy tire himself.”
Garmadon to his students, "The Art of the Silent Fist"

The Art of the Silent Fist is a martial arts technique created by Garmadon.[1] Described as "fighting without fighting," it is a way to fight one's opponent without touching them and letting them tire themselves. Garmadon developed the Art of the Silent Fist as part of his vow of pacifism following his reformation.

After Garmadon was resurrected in his evil form, Lloyd fought him in a climactic battle and won by using his father's old tactic against him.

History[]

The Art of the Silent Fist[]

When the ninja fled from New Ninjago City and the Overlord, they, with the exception of Zane, went to Master Garmadon's monastery and were taught a lesson on the Art of the Silent Fist.

At the monastery, Lloyd volunteered to battle his father, only to be defeated in a sparring training session. Garmadon had used the Art of the Silent Fist to defeat his son, meaning Lloyd had not touched him once, and let his anger make him lose. The lesson continued with the students practicing the Art of the Silent Fist in pairs.

Later, when the ninja had traveled to the main power source of Ninjago, Jay, Kai, and Cole tried to break through the glass with their Techno Blades, but they were unable to do so. Instead, they used the Art of the Silent Fist to provoke Nindroids to shoot at the glass, making it shatter, and putting out all the power in Ninjago.

A Team Divided[]

After a few disastrous interactions, Kai was forced to confront a man named Big Dan in the Slither Pit at Yang Tavern. Hesitant to use his offensive ninja skills for a petty conflict, Kai decided to use the Art of the Silent Fist to defeat his opponent, dodging out of the way and leading Big Dan to slam into the side of the Slither Pit.

Green Destiny[]

While confronting his father atop the ruined building of Borg Tower, Lloyd opts to use his father's teachings against him. He uses the Art of the Silent Fist to avoid flying debris and blasts of destructive energy, while not directly fighting his father. Eventually, the tactic pays off, as Garmadon's element fades away—and as a result, Lloyd regains his own element.

Trivia[]

  • In A Team Divided, Kai misremembered the Art of the Silent Fist as Wu's lesson, not Garmadon's.
  • The technique was not mentioned by name in "Green Destiny" because it was "decided that the reference was too far back".[2]
  • Garmadon uses the Art of the Silent Fist as an alternative combat method instead of using Destruction.[3]
