“Lies! You just want my power for yourselves. But my destruction of you ninja will be legendary! And all you traitors to your Empress. You are no better than the ninja! No one will rule this kingdom but me, and I will destroy everyone who stands in my way!”
— Beatrix to the ninja and then to the Imperians, "The Power Within"

Beatrix Vespasian-Orus (formerly also known as the Good Empress) was the totalitarian ruler of the Kingdom of Imperium. Long before The Merge, she allied with Ras to murder her father, Levo, and banished her twin sister and rightful heir, Zeatrix, in order to take the throne. After Imperium conflated with the other realms, she sought to capture the Source Dragons to meet the energy needs of Imperium forever while also gaining control of every other realm.

After an encounter with the ninja, she began seeing them as obstacles. Now focusing her attention to them, she decided to deal with them herself, after being fed up with Ras failing several times in stopping them from rescuing the dragons that the Claws of Imperium had captured. When she learned of the Dragon Cores, she intended to use them to eliminate the ninja. Her desires got the best of her when her true nature was broadcast, making most Imperians lose respect for her. She attempted to use her MergeQuake weapon to eliminate everyone by sending them into MergeQuake rifts. After Sora, a former Imperian citizen named Ana, destroyed it, Beatrix was sent into a MergeQuake rift herself by Arin.

History[]

Background[]

Absolute Power (37)

Beatrix and her family meeting Ras

Beatrix, the second-born daughter of Levo, the Emperor of the Kingdom of Imperium, held a significant position in the line of succession for the throne alongside her twin sister, Zeatrix. However, Beatrix was overshadowed by her father's favoritism towards Zeatrix. The reason behind this preference lay in Zeatrix's abilities as an Elemental Master, which she had inherited from their father. As Zeatrix wielded her Elemental Powers, Beatrix couldn't help but feel inadequate and taunted from her own family. Over time, these experiences fueled Beatrix's yearning for true power and fostered a deep resentment towards her father and sister.

Absolute Power (253)

Beatrix teaming up with Ras

One day, an outlander named Ras arrived in the kingdom. Ras offered his assistance to Levo. He claimed that by using the kindgom's technology, he could capture a Source Dragon, thereby averting an impending energy crisis and potentially enabling the conquest of other realms. However, Levo dismissed Ras' proposal and had Zeatrix kick the latter out with her powers. Despite her father's rejection, Beatrix was captivated by Ras' proposition.[2]

Absolute Power (279)

Beatrix becoming an empress

Beatrix and Ras rendezvoused, where she proceeded to express her acceptance of Ras' offer. She elaborated on her reasons for defying her own family, emphasizing that if Ras assisted her in ascending to the position of Empress, she would ensure that he received the necessary resources to capture a Source Dragon. This, in turn, would grant the Imperium dominion over the remaining realms. To accomplish this, Beatrix and Ras planted a bomb on her father's hover chariot, causing it to crash and resulting in his instant death, all while making it appear as an unfortunate accident. They later expelled Zeatrix from the kingdom, resulting in Beatrix becoming the Empress of Imperium. From then on, Beatrix enforced strict rules in the kingdom, imprisoning and eliminating those who opposed her, similar to what happened to Levo and Zeatrix.[2][3]

Beatrix would later establish the Advanced Systems Lab under the supervision of Dr. LaRow and a team of scientists to develop specialized tools for hunting dragons.[4] However, when the Merge occurred and merged Imperium with other realms, Beatrix saw an opportunity to use the Photacs to capture every single dragon across the realms.[5]

Dr. LaRow called Empress Beatrix from the Advanced Systems Lab to inform her that the Photacs were ready. Beatrix was pleased by this news and ordered her and Ras to recapture the escaped dragons.

The Calm Inside[]

Beatrix came across Imperian citizen Percival Tartigrade, who had brought in Riyu on his hoverboard. After having the baby dragon caged, Beatrix informed Ras of the capture and orders him to return to her.

As she congratulated Percival before he leaves, Ras arrived. Beatrix then asked Ras about the role of Riyu in his plan, considering the trouble it had caused him. Ras attributed the difficulty to the ninja's interference. However, Beatrix pointed out that Percival had delivered the dragon to her with ease. Beatrix then issued a warning to Riyu, stating that her actions would dishearten his friends and quell their rebellion. She directed Ras to call in Dr. LaRow to extract the dragon's energy, despite Ras reminding her of the importance of keeping the dragon alive for his plan. Beatrix responded by asserting her authority, making it clear that she would not tolerate being told what to do by anyone. Even reaching the point where she reminded Ras that he was an outlander, causing him to bow his head in acknowledgment of her authority. Beatrix commanded Ras to call Dr. LaRow to drain the dragon.

As Dr. LaRow and Jordana arrived, Beatrix waited for Riyu's energy to be drained. Dr. LaRow and Jordana prepared to extract Riyu's energy when an attack by Lloyd and the dragons disrupted the plan. Beatrix expressed her outrage at the brazen assault and left with Ras to assess the situation. Upon arriving at her hover chariot, Beatrix confronted Lloyd, accusing him of laying siege to the Imperium Palace. As Lloyd condemned Beatrix's treatment of dragons as mere objects, Beatrix maintained her position as Empress and refused to provide any clarifications to those she deemed inferior. She then commanded the Claws of Imperium to attack, showing no mercy toward the ninja and dragons.

The Battle of the Second Monastery[]

Beatrix issued orders to the Claws of Imperium to take action against the ninja, who were still caught off guard by their sudden arrival. The ninja sought refuge in the Monastery of Imperium, prompting Beatrix to remind Rapton of the purpose behind providing the Photac Beasts, whose indestructibility can effectively bring down the doors. While Rapton suggested a strategic approach, Beatrix insists on a more direct one, urging him to simply break down the doors. After the successful escape of the ninja and dragons, Beatrix dissatisfied with the outcome and felt surrounded by her incompetent Imperian colleagues. Overwhelmed by anger, she unleashed a burst of energy from her Claw Staff, causing debris to cascade around Rapton.

Days later, Beatrix convened a meeting in the throne room, summoning Ras, Rapton, and two Claw Hunters. Ras apprised Beatrix of their progress in organizing additional dragon hunts. However, Beatrix was disinterested in dragons, instead fixating on her personal humiliation inflicted by the ninja. She vehemently demanded the eradication of the team. Ras attempted to remind her of the plan, emphasizing the importance of what Imperium could do with just having one Source Dragon. Disregarding his guidance, Beatrix commanded the immediate arrest of Ras by the Claws of Imperium, accusing him of repeated failures. Furthermore, she revealed her intention to personally confront the ninja, activating the concealed mechanized form of her throne, known as the Empress Mech.

The Temple of the Dragon Cores[]

Beatrix claimed that Imperium was the center of the Merged Realms. She lied that a small faction of Imperians has been propagating rumors about the dragons escaping, but she assured the populace that they were swiftly recaptured and that there is no energy shortage now that the dragons were back under Imperium's control. Beatrix cautions that anyone who voiced dissent against Imperium or spreaded rumors would be incarcerated as a traitor. She pledged to persist in leading the Imperians toward a brighter future. As the broadcast ended, Dr. LaRow explained the ongoing energy crisis to Beatrix. Beatrix, however, reminds Dr. LaRow of the Source Dragons, a powerful energy source that was meant to sustain them indefinitely. Unfortunately, Dr. LaRow explained that extracting the dragon power from the Source Dragon they have is a complex process, which is why Ras sought an alternative plan. Beatrix vehemently refused to hear Ras's name mentioned in her presence. Dr. LaRow proposed implementing energy conservation measures to alleviate the crisis, but Beatrix dismissed the idea, fearing that it would upset her subjects and make them difficult to control. She placed blame on the ninja for the energy crisis and eagerly awaited the results of Rapton's spy mission.

Beatrix learns from Rapton of the three Dragon Cores, which the ninja sought to retrieve in order to stabilize the world from further merge quakes. When asked by Rapton if she wants to use the cores to stop the merge quakes, Beatrix tells him that she'll use them as a weapon to stop the ninja for good.

Gangs of the Sea[]

Beatrix with Rapton

In the storage facility, Beatrix walked in to find Rapton waiting for her. He assured her that everything was ready. Beatrix expressed her contentment, stressing the significance of outsmarting the ninja in acquiring the Dragon Cores and annihilating them. Rapton voiced his concern, proposing that they should concentrate on capturing dragons instead of solely focusing on the ninja. However, Beatrix remained resolute in seeking vengeance against the ninja for their defiance. She firmly believed that once the ninja were eliminated, no one would be able to impede their efforts in obtaining any dragon they desired.

Absolute Power[]

Absolute Power (98)

Beatrix receiving the Dragon Energy Core

Beatrix makes another claim, saying that the Crossroads is a haven for criminals and more dragons were coming in before hugging two children. It then turned out to be staged by Dorama with the 'children' being simple actors due to her distaste in children before Rapton arrived, having recovered the Dragon Core he was assigned to before learning the ninja are not far behind.

Absolute Power (311)

Beatrix then proclaimed her long awaited vow against the ninja before denying Dr. LaRow's request to test out the MergeQuake weapon with the ninja on the way. When the test commenced, the core Rapton gave her exploded, angering her before she visits Ras, who reminds her of how she got the throne in the first place before he demands to be let out, but she refuses. Soon, a guard warned her of the ninja's arrival, leading her to return to the lab, where Rapton was no longer present after the fake was destroyed. Beatrix then demanded LaRow to make one out of the source dragon below the city. When she refused, Jordana requested to lead the extraction, which Beatrix accepted.

We Are All Dragons[]

Attacking the ninja

In the company of the Claw Hunters, Beatrix confronted the ninja and the Imperium Teen Resistance Force on the Empress Mech. Beatrix expressed her shock that any Imperians would dare to side with the ninja, emphasizing that they would face execution. The Empress further criticized the ninja for invading her kingdom, deeming their actions foolish and disrespectful. She belittled their training and Elemental Powers, confidently asserting that they were no match for her superior strength and skill. As the ninja attacked her with their Elemental Powers, Beatrix remained unfazed and effortlessly blocked their every move. She knocked them back with her Imperium Sword, taunting them about the strength of their abilities. Beatrix asserted her dominance and declared that no one, not even the most skilled and powerful, could ever surpass her might.

Beatrix watching a leaked video of her true intentions

Beatrix observed Nya and Sora, riding on the backs of Jiro and Zanth, approaching Imperium while launching an attack on the electro-barrier. She scoffed at their attempt, confident in Imperium's invincibility. However, as Jiro unleashed a powerful lightning beam, Beatrix was left in disbelief as the barrier was destroyed. She was caught off guard as Jiro charged towards her, and she responded by pushing him away with all her might. Beatrix was determined to capture the Resistance, and she engaged in a fierce battle with Zanth and Jiro. During the battle, Beatrix found herself briefly overpowered and thrown against a building, causing debris to collapse upon her. However, she seized Zanth by the tail, slamming her forcefully onto the ground. Jiro rushed towards Beatrix, but she tossed him aside and firmly grasped his armor, declaring that no dragon could beat her. With a swift motion, she cut off a blaster from Jiro's weaponized armor.

We Are All Dragons (393)

Beatrix threw one of Jiro's blasters towards Lloyd, Nya, and Zane, nearly hitting them. Beatrix remained steadfast in her determination to prevent the ninja from obtaining the Dragon Cores. With her Imperium Sword in hand, she parried and countered the ninja's attacks with ease. Overpowering them with a single forceful blow, Beatrix sent the ninja reeling backward. However, her triumph was short-lived as she overheard a video recording of herself expressing her deep-seated hatred towards Imperians and her own family. Beatrix found herself in agreement with her own words, but soon realized that her true colors were being exposed all over Imperium. She watched as Sora delivered a speech exposing Beatrix's dark actions of mercilessly torturing dragons until their demise and her dehumanizing treatment of all beings. As the Imperians began to express their outrage, jeering and throwing objects at Beatrix, she frantically insisted that the videos were fake and that she was a nice person. However, her desperate attempts to regain control of the situation backfired, and she even resorted to throwing one of the Imperium Guards, who were on Beatrix's side, at the angry citizens before fleeing as Jordana contacts her, informing her the extraction was complete.

In front of the Imperium Palace, Beatrix stood face to face with the ninja, now equipped with the MergeQuake weapon. She showed her mastery over the Dragon Cores and proclaimed her victory over the ninja. As she raised her weapon, a beam of dragon power shot up into the sky, causing a MergeQuake to form.

The Power Within[]

SorasTruePotential

Sora destroying the Mergequake weapon

Beatrix felt a sense of accomplishment as the MergeQuake weapon worked. The ninja urged Beatrix to stop using the weapon, warning her of the danger and the potential consequences. Beatrix, thinking that they were trying to deceive her, accused them of coveting her power and refused to listen to them. She unleashed an immense wave of energy from her Imperium Sword, pushing the ninja back and focusing her attention on the Imperians. Beatrix began to equate the Imperians to the ninja. She declared her right to rule over Imperium, vowing to destroy anyone who dared to oppose her. She began to fire blasts of dragon power, causing the Imperians to be forcefully drawn into the MergeQuakes. The ninja retaliated by attacking Beatrix with their Elemental Powers and Spinjitzu. She swung her sword, unleashing a wave of energy, but Wyldfyre countered with a blast of Heat. Beatrix, however, used the MergeQuake weapon, causing Wyldfyre to be sucked into a rift. Beatrix then aimed the MergeQuake weapon directly at Kai, who swiftly evaded the newly formed MergeQuakes and charged towards Beatrix. However, Beatrix swiftly knocked Kai aside with her sword, continuing to fire MergeQuakes everywhere.

Riyu rushed towards Sora, but Beatrix fired behind him, causing Riyu to be sucked into a rift. Witnessing Beatrix's attack on Sora, Arin quickly picked up a rock and used Object Spinjitzu to throw it at the Empress Mech, causing Beatrix to fall to the ground. Kai, seeking revenge for Wyldfyre, launched a fireball at Beatrix and attempted to attack her, but she quickly sent him into a MergeQuake. Beatrix dashed through Imperium, followed by Nya and Rapton. She shot at them, causing Rapton to be sucked into a MergeQuake. Lloyd, piloting the Master Mech, strike Beatrix, disarming her of the MergeQuake weapon. Arin, in the Dragon Mech, head toward the MergeQuake weapon. But Beatrix tripped him, and began to fight both Lloyd and Arin until she fired the MergeQuake weapon, resulting in their mechs to be sucked in. Beatrix was ready to unleash the power of the MergeQuake weapon upon Lloyd and Arin. She declared that it was the end for them. However, just as Beatrix prepared to attack, Sora tapped into her Elemental Powers and unlocked her True Potential. Beatrix was confused by what was happening. Suddenly, Sora's True Potential destroyed the MergeQuake weapon, leaving Beatrix stunned. Before she can regain her composure, Arin, fueled by vengeance for Riyu, utilized Spinjitzu to deliver a powerful blow, sending Beatrix tumbling into a MergeQuake. After the MergeQuake incident, all those who were engulfed in its chaos emerged unscathed. However, amidst the aftermath, Beatrix mysteriously vanished from Imperium, leaving her current location shrouded in uncertainty.

Beyond the Phantasm Cave[]

In the Phantasm Cave, Sora had a vision about Beatrix shooting lightning at her with Lord Ras while being inside of a big screen.

Appearance[]

Absolute Power (312)

Beatrix's royal outfit

Beatrix is an adult woman with an almost identical appearance to that of her twin sister. She has thicker black eyebrows and prominent narrow lips, she also has Imperium markings on her face, specifically several golden lines coming from her left eye and covering the entire left side of her head. Her hairstyle is shorter white hair combed to the right side, shaved on the other side.

Her outfit consists of black and gold armor, over which she wears a black gown with gold trim and markings, as well as glowing orange elements. She also has golden gloves and shoulder pads and wears a dark red cape. In the middle of her chest, she has an orange glowing orb, but it is not visible through the armor.

As a young woman, she wore very similar clothing, but her gown was dark red in color and she wore no shoulder pads or cape.

Personality[]

Absolute Power (219)

Beatrix being angry at Dr. LaRow for failing her

Empress Beatrix is a tyrannical dictator who has traits of megalomania, as she seeks to conquer the other realms and Ninjago and place them under her rule. She is also shown to be a psychopath as while she claims that she cares greatly for Imperium, she is actually callous and unsympathetic towards dragons, her fellow Imperians, and all other living beings, no matter how much they had suffered from her, and she even expressed prejudice, since she sees everyone else as nothing more but mindless beasts, lesser beings, slaves, power sources, and pawns. Beatrix is also hot-tempered and intolerant of failures, and would not hesitate to punish any of her followers once her patience has been used up. In addition, Beatrix's desire to conquer the Merged Realms and rule over all of the universe's inhabitants suggests she may consider herself to be a deity, which is supported by her claim to be the "protector of the true path".

Absolute Power (82)

Beatrix pretending to like children on-screen

Beatrix is shown to be a deceitful and manipulative liar as she lied to the people of Imperium that the dragons the ninja had freed were recaptured and that they hadn't escaped. She also pretended to like children despite of her complete distaste for them as she shot some promotional videos for Imperium in which she hugged children only to reveal they were paid actors in green suits. The reason for this is that Beatrix fully knows well that if all of Imperium will panic, if they ever learn of the truth as well as the newly occurring energy crisis, then they will be harder to control. However, despite this, some people had already seen the incident with their own eyes and they began questioning on why their "beloved" empress would lie to them.

Absolute Power (262)

Beatrix watching her father's death

Beatrix's hatred for the people around her stems from the fact that when she was young, her father favored her older twin sister in everything, even though she was born just minutes before her. However, since Zeatrix had an Elemental Power, her father was always the most important thing to them, which was why Beatrix built up such a huge grudge against her family and even didn't hesitate to eliminate them at the first opportunity she could gain power herself.

Etymology[]

Beatrix is a female given name and it means "one who brings joy" in Latin. It is also a Hungarian name and it means "voyager" or "traveler." The first part of her last name, Vespasian comes from the Roman Emperor, Vespasian, whose name is believed to mean either "west", "evening", or "wasp". The second part, Orus, comes from Greek mythology and it means the "first to be born." This is ironic as she is the second born twin.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Beatrix was originally supposed to be a male character known as the "Good Emperor," which was later to changed to the "Good Empress."[7]
  • Unlike in the show, her minifigure features cheekbones, her hair is a bit longer, wears dark gray sleeves and she lacks the cape.

Trivia[]

  • She is the first known descendant of an Elemental Master to be confirmed to not inherit an Elemental Power.
  • She and her sister are the third pair of twins in the franchise, the first being the Time Twins, and the second being Akita and Kataru.
    • She and Zeatrix are the only twins who look completely identical excluding their haircuts.
  • She is one of the eight main antagonists (or group of main antagonists) to be from another realm, the others being The Preeminent, Nadakhan, Iron Baron, The Omega, Vex, Ras, and the Forbidden Five.
  • She could be considered Acronix's opposite for several reasons.
    • While they are both the younger twin, Acronix is able to share half of his family's power with Krux since Time can be split among twins thus allowing them to be Elemental Masters. Beatrix, on the other hand, ended up being born a normal person because her twin Zeatrix is the older twin.
    • Acronix is completely loyal to his brother and would never betray him even though they have their differences which annoys them, and wants to rule beside him, while Beatrix hates her sister and willingly betrays her so she could inherit the throne to Imperium for herself.
  • Beatrix shares similarities and differences with Iron Baron.
    • The similarities are that they were tyrannical rulers outside of Ninjago who abused dragons and lied to their people to hide their true agendas respectively.
    • The differences are that Beatrix did not entirely kill the dragons, due to her goal of extracting their energy to maintain power in Imperium, while Iron Baron hunted dragons and only wanted to take control of Firstbourne by wearing the Dragon Armor.
  • She is the fourth main female villain in the franchise after the Preeminent, Harumi, and Aspheera.
    • Coincidentally, all of these female villains that are/were royalty. The Preeminent is considered the Queen of the Cursed Realm, Harumi is the Princess of Ninjago despite not having any real power and is instead a figurehead, Aspheera was briefly the Queen of the Serpentine, and Beatrix was the Empress of Imperium.
    • Beatrix is also the second main female villain to have white hair with Harumi being the first. They are also both daughters of emperors.
    • However, Beatrix is the only one who can be considered the absolute main villain of the season, as the Preeminent only fully appears in the last episode of Possession and Morro served as the main villain until then, Harumi resurrected Garmadon, who took over the role of main villain after her in Sons of Garmadon, and Aspheera shared the position with Vex as she is the main villain of the Fire Chapter only.
  • She is the second empress in Ninjago, the first being the Empress of Ninjago.
  • She is the third princess to appear in Ninjago, the first being Harumi and the second being Vania.
  • She is the fifth main antagonist that doesn't appear in the first episode of their season, the first four being Pythor, the Preeminent, Vangelis, and Kalmaar.
  • Her facial markings are asymmetrically identical to the ones Levo has although she and her twin sister have them only on the left side of their faces.
  • She shares the same voice actress as her twin sister Zeatrix, Nicole Oliver.
