Beyond the Phantasm Cave is the third episode of the second season of Ninjago: Dragons Rising and the 23rd episode overall.
Synopsis[]
A metal gate. A teacher. And a direction...? Lloyd experiences a vision from the Source Dragons that sends the Ninja on a righteous but unclear quest.[1]
LEGO's YouTube Channel: Come on, Source Dragons – LLOYD NEEDS ANSWERS!!! The ninja set out to find the mysterious Master who can combat Shatterspin. Just one tiny, teeny problem: they’re not quite sure where the Master may be or if they even exist...[2]
ITVX: Reeling from their recent defeat, Lloyd leads the Ninja in a search for a new master who can combat the new threat of Shatterspin.[3]
Extended: Reeling from defeat in the Cloud Kingdom, Lloyd reaches out to the Source Dragons and receives a vision that sets the Ninja on a journey to find a hidden, hermit Master capable of combating this new, evil form of Spinjitzu, Shatterspin. Meanwhile, Ras turns the Cloud Kingdom into his new floating base and seeks out the final component in the ritual to free the Forbidden Five.[4]

Cinder using Shatterspin to destroy pots
In Cloud Kingdom, Cinder undergoes a Shatterspin transformation with his Wolf Mask morphing into his armor and his eyes glowing red. He unleashes a series of attacks on several clay pots. Ras compliments Cinder's accuracy, and Cinder remarks that he feels the Gong of Shattering inside him, shattering the last goodness in his soul. He brags to Jordana about being Ras's favorite. Suetonius and Euphrasia are chained up nearby, and Jordana insults Euphrasia, laughing at the vengestone medallion around her neck preventing her from using her wind power.

Kai, using his mech to destroy crates
At the Monastery of Spinjitzu, Kai destroys crates using his Elemental Fire Mech in the hangar bay. Nya scorns his behavior, and remarks that Wu's notes mention nothing about Shatterspin or the Forbidden Five, commenting that it was like it was all scrubbed from history. Kai throws a crate in the air and blows it up, mentioning that somebody had defeated the Forbidden Five before, and that the ninja had to figure out how they did it, and fast.

Lloyd meditating
In the interior of the monastery, Sora is working on creating a gadget, as Arin is training on a punching bag with Riyu observing them both. Arin punches the bag off its chain and warns Sora to look out as Riyu catches it. Sora comments that everybody has been on edge with their defeat at Cloud Kingdom, and that she's creating gadgets to try to help. Arin comments that he's training because he doesn't know what else to do. He tells Sora that Lloyd is outside meditating in the courtyard.

Small dragons surrounding Lloyd
Several hours later, Lloyd is awoken from his meditation by a fly. He bursts out in anger, scorning himself for being there for several hours yet achieving nothing, only having visions of what could go wrong instead of what could go right. He yells to the sky, calling out the Source Dragons, questioning if they're listening, and demanding answers. He crumbles to his knees and sees seven Spirit Dragons approach him from the sky, flying in a circle together. They surround him and fly directly into his chest. Lloyd falls to the ground before his eyes glow brightly.

When Lloyd wakes up, he is within a circle of seven symbols, representing the Source Dragons. The Motion Symbol questions Lloyd, and the Energy Symbol states that Lloyd freed him from his captivity. The Strength Symbol observes that Lloyd wields an Elemental Power, and asks who claims him. The Life Symbol speaks up, claiming that Lloyd is one of theirs, and a descendant of the First Spinjitzu Master. The Motion Symbol claims to sense danger from the mortals. The Strength Symbol scoffs, claiming that even with the realms merged, the mortals cannot touch them. The Energy Symbol states that he thought that once, before he was imprisoned. The Strength Symbol scoffs once more, claiming that Lloyd doesn't look like much to him. Yet the Energy Symbol defends Lloyd, claiming that he was a conduit to his unbridled energy. The Life Symbol seems surprised, and asks about a mortal being exposed directly. They state that the effects could be profound. The Energy Symbol states that Lloyd is no ordinary mortal, and that he asks for help. The Motion Symbol questions the Energy Symbol about involving themselves in mortal affairs. The Energy Symbol asks her to reconsider, and that he is in Lloyd's debt, and that perhaps, they all are. The Motion Symbol agrees, stating that they can start him on the path, but that the journey has to be his own. She emits a beam of red light into Lloyd's chest, and his eyes glow a bright green once more.

Lloyd's vision of Egalt
Lloyd yells, and he has a vision of a door with dragon-like symbols, a dragon running towards him, and a pit with a bright light at the top. This vision repeats over and over again, faster each time. Lloyd wakes up back at the monastery, and sees that he is floating above the ground. He falls to the ground as his eyes stop glowing. Arin and Sora rush out to him, and Lloyd tells them about his experience. He claims that his head has been filled with pieces of a puzzle, and that there is a teacher somewhere that can teach them how to fight Shatterspin.
Beneath the monastery, Wyldfyre turns in her sleep near Heatwave. Kai taps her, and she gets excited about going on an adventure. However, she yelps in pain from her bandaged foot, and Kai tells her to let her body heal, while the rest of the ninja go on a mission. Wyldfyre is upset.

Kai arrives in the hangar bay as the ninja prepare the Destiny's Bounty for their mission. Lloyd talks to Nya about only having a sense of where the teacher is. Alfonzo Frohicky walks by, telling them that Zane would remain at the monastery with him while they are gone. Kai asks him to keep an eye on Wyldfyre for him.
At Cloud Kingdom, Jordana approaches Ras to tell him that she has located the final component. Ras is impressed, and Jordana states that she has learned much from the hidden scrolls and the mentorship of Ras. Ras announces that they will leave immediately, and Jordana brags to Cinder. The three of them go to the room where Cloud Kingdom has its motor, and Jordana states that it hasn't been used in hundreds of years. Ras orders the captive Writers of Destiny to turn the engine, and all of Cloud Kingdom begins to crumble, with the main island leaving the others.

Lloyd, worried about the younger ninja
On the Destiny's Bounty, Lloyd talks to Nya about his vision being more like instructions than nightmares. He describes it to her, telling her that he isn't sure if he should trust his own brain. Nya responds by saying she doesn't trust his vision, but that she trusts him. Lloyd expresses his concern for Arin, Sora, and Riyu if the ninja are led into a trap. They watch Sora unpackage her grappler, and Arin attempt to perform his Object Spinjitzu on a rock, but fail. Lloyd states that they aren't ready, and Nya responds with her support and hope in them. Suddenly, a sound is heard from the engine department. Everybody on board rushes to the trapdoor down into it and hear a sneeze. Sora checks the department, and pulls up Wyldfyre. Kai gets upset, and Wyldfyre claims that she's all better, yet proceeds to fall over. She talks about getting past Frohicky by putting rocks under her blanket. Kai wants to take her back, but Nya says it's too late since it looks like the ninja have arrived.

Kai's Climber Mech
The Destiny's Bounty flies into a hole in the mountain. Sora tells Arin about the time she hid from her parents, saying that the importance of the story is that she hid away in the most impossible place she could find, and that maybe the teacher Lloyd speaks of doesn't want to be found either. The Bounty arrives under the pit that was in Lloyd's vision, and Lloyd stops the ship. The ninja see broken ships under them, and they decide the Bounty can't go on. Because of this, Sora gives the ninja the Dragon Hooks that she was working on. Kai brings up that Riyu can't fly and Wyldfyre is injured. Sora uses her Elemental Power of Technology on the broken ships below and Kai's grappler to create a Climber Mech for Kai to carry Riyu and Wyldfyre. The ninja begin to climb, but tentacles emerge from the diamond shaped holes in the wall of the pit to grab Arin and Nya. Lloyd rescues Nya and Arin with Spinjitzu as Kai fights off incoming tentacles. Kai catches Arin, and the ninja make it to the top of the pit. Lloyd leads the ninja through the Phantasm Cave. In the cave, everything darkens, and the darkness spreads until the ninja can't see anything.

Arin sees his parents
When Arin is able to partially see again, he sees two figures in the distance of his vision. They are his parents, who turn around to face him. He tries to run towards them, but he isn't going anywhere. His mom calls out to him, asking why Arin left them, and asking if the ninja are his new family now. Arin yells out that he misses them, but they turn around and disappear from view as Arin fades backwards.

A lightning charge bursts from a picture of Beatrix and Ras
Sora sees a digital display with a picture of Empress Beatrix and Ras on it. As she approaches, a lightning charge comes from the middle of the screen, right into her chest. Sora yells from the lightning as a hand slowly comes out of the screen as well.

Wu and Ras taunting Lloyd
Lloyd sees Wu, who tells Lloyd that he failed the ninja, and that Wu was wrong about letting Lloyd take over. Ras appears behind Wu, and Wu's voice distorts into Ras' voice as he tells Lloyd that he will never be good enough. Wu and Ras disappear and reappear two different times, getting larger each time.

Nya sees Jay
Nya sees Jay, but Jay doesn't recognize her. Because of this, Nya gets upset, but then pauses and realizes that what she is experiencing isn't real. She wakes up in a cave, and sees the others hanging from green electricity, along with herself. She disconnects herself and awakens the others by scaring away the monster that was causing the electricity. Nya explains that she saw Jay, the love of her life. She knew that the real Jay would never forget her, and that's how she knew the simulation wasn't real. She suggested that they keep moving.

Egalt appears
The ninja soon found themselves outside of the cave on an isolated island surrounded by fog. They don't know what is under the fog and are scared to jump. Nya tells Lloyd that they trust him, and because of this, Kai jumps before telling the others. In shock, the ninja call for Kai, and he calls them down. Once they're down, Lloyd exclaims to the others that he sees the dragon-like door from his vision. Suddenly, the dragon from Lloyd's vision roars and flies over where the door is, landing between it and the ninja. He roars once more, preparing an ice blast, and Lloyd gasps.

- It is unknown what Kai or Riyu saw during the Test of Fear.
- When the Spirit Dragons descend upon Lloyd, they make a buzzing sound akin to that of the insect that was pestering Lloyd.
- The tentacles that attack the ninja look similar to the ones of the tentacled beasts.
- Since the Dream-Guyver comes from the same realm as them, it is possible that the tentacles also originate from that realm.[6]
Continuity[]
- Kai urging to turn around and take Wyldfyre back to the Monastery is similar to Nya wanting to do the same thing in "Unsinkable" after learning that their mother stowed away on the Hydro Bounty.
- Coincidentally, these are both the third episodes of their respective seasons.
