Breakout! is a Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu chapter book released in April 28, 2015. It tells the events of Cole of the other Elemental Masters' escape from the noodle factory.

Book's Official Description[]

The wisecracking ninja must figure out how to defeat Master Chen--without their powers! Cole has been eliminated from the Tournament of Elements, and Master Chen has stolen his powers. But the Ninja of Earth has gained something even more important-he has found Zane, who is now the Titanium Ninja! Together, Cole and Zane must help the other captured Elemental Masters break out from Chen's palace, where they are being forced to work in his noodle factory. But escape will be difficult since all the warriors have been stripped of their powers. Can they work together to come up with a plan? They'll really need to use their noodles for this one, because it's time for a breakout mission-ninja style! Now available in ebook!

Plot[]

From the Journal of Sensei Garmadon[]

Garmadon opens his journal with a remark about how he's lucky he didn't believe Lloyd's lie about fishing with the Ninja. He believes that the Ninja are in danger, and he's worried about how Master Chen's managed separate them. He explains that Chen invited the remaining Ninja to participate in the Tournament of Elements, a tournament with most of the Elemental Masters as participants. He said that the only way to save Zane from captivity, who they believed to be dead, was to participate in the Tournament, and the Ninja are willing to take the risk. Garmadon joined the Ninja on their journey, despite Chen's protests. Once they arrived, the Tournament began, and Chen had the participants search the Island for Jadeblades. The first person to be eliminated, who wasn't able to find one of the Jadeblades, was Karlof, Master of Metal. As punishment, Chen used his Staff of Elements to take Karlof's Element. Garmadon reveals that that is the true purpose of the Tournament; to claim all the Elements for Chen. One by one, all the losers are stripped of their Elements, and sent to work in Chen's noodle factory. However, the Ninja knew that they could not challenge Chen until they rescued Zane, so they fought to stay in the Tournament. Despite this, Chen made Jay and Cole fight, and Cole purposefully lost to protect Jay. He disappeared under the Island, and Garmadon concludes that his Element of Earth will be taken as well. However, Garmadon is convinced that Cole will be able to fend for himself. He's still worried, though, about Chen's plan, and his group of Anacondrai Warriors. He wonders if Chen's goal has something to do with the lost Serpentine tribe, and worries about - and hopes for - Zane's safety.

Chapter 1[]

Zugu and another guard lock down the noodle factory. As they leave, Karlof walks over to bins of floor, and, after telling them it's all clear, Cole and Zane come out. Cole had found Zane in one of Chen's cells, and despite Zane looking different after having rebuilt himself, Cole still recognized him. After Cole had been eliminated from the Tournament, he had his Element taken away and was sent to the noodle factory. However, he was able to find Zane, and managed to break him out. They then returned to the factory to free the other prisoners. Cole looks at the other prisoners, and notes Karlof, former Master of Metal; Gravis, former Master of Gravity; Bolobo, former Master of Nature; Chamille, former Master of Form; Ash, former Master of Smoke; and Tox, former Master of Poison. He noted that after being stuck in the noodle factory for a few days, they had all lost their motivation to fight. Saddened, he told them that they would continue to plan a breakout, and Zane projected a hologram of a 3D map of Chen's palace. Cole explains that if they take the labyrinth, they would get lost, but Zane has calculated that their weight can be supported by the sewer network. However, their weight is barely under the limit, so if there's any unexpected weight gain, then the tunnels will collapse. Suddenly, they heard the guards returning, and Cole and Zane jumped back in the barrels. The guards opened the door and threw in Dareth, their newest prisoner. Cole and Zane were shocked to see him here, but Karlof pointed out that they were now over the weight limit. They resigned to thinking of a new plan.

Chapter 2[]

While working, Dareth told Cole and Zane that him and Nya had come to the Island on her mobile unit. Cole was worried about Nya, but Dareth pointed out that if she wasn't here, then she must be safe. Zane interrupted them and mentioned that Zugu would return in about 13 minutes, so they began to try and think of a new plan. Gravis suggested sneaking out, the way that Cole and Zane snuck back in. However, Zane said there were too many guards, and Cole mentioned the giant snake. Tox suggests just fighting out, but Zane counters that by pointing out that they guards have Anacondrai Blades, and they wouldn't stand a chance with just their fists. Cole suggested they turn themselves into a giant egg roll and get shipped to Chen's Noodle House, but all the Masters counter that, and Zane declares it has a -30% chance of success. Karlof mentions that he used to be an aeronautical engineer, in Metalonia, and that he worked on Roto Jets. Cole mentioned that they don't have a Roto Jet, plus they're underground, so a jet wouldn't even properly work. Suddenly, Dareth climbed onto the worktable, reaching for some pipes on the ceiling. Curious, Cole asked him what he was doing, and Dareth replied that he was making a machine that made puffy pot stickers, since there wasn't already one. That gave Zane an idea: they could make a Roto Jet using parts from the noodle machines! Karlof began working on a blueprint, and the rest of the Masters began gathering spare parts. Cole mentioned, again, that they were underground, but they all ignored him. Two guards entered the factory, looking around. Zane and Karlof huddled over the table, pretending to be working, but they were actually making the Roto Jets blueprint. Karlof was able to identify enough pieces for everything except the rotor, and some missing wires, so Zane asked P.I.X.A.L. to show him the schematics for the tunnels, so he could try and find the missing pieces they needed. Zane identified a fan they could use as the rotor, but it was on the guards' balcony, so they would need to wait hours to take it, when the guards left. However, Ash pointed out that he could create a smoke screen using his understanding of smoke, and Karlof and Zane could grab the fan. Ash began turned up the heat on the noodle fryer, creating smoke, and directed it at the guards, creating a smoke screen for Karlof and Zane to run through. Directed by P.I.X.A.L., they made it through the smoke, and began unscrewing the bolts, when Cole came to help them carry it. However, right before they could finish, they heard footsteps, and saw Zugu approaching!

Chapter 3[]

Right before Zugu could see them, however, another guard came up behind him and told him to leave. They distracted the other guards, saying they had it under control, and after the guards left, they lifted their mask and revealed themselves to be Chamille. They were able to get the fan down, and hid it under a tarp on a broken noodle machine. They decided that Karlof could pretend to be fixing the machine while actually making the Roto Jet, and he got to work. The guards gave the prisoners their daily 3.5 minute meal break, giving them noodle scraps from the factory floor. However, because Cole and Zane had supposedly escaped, they couldn't get any, and had to just hide and watch from under the tarp. Once the break was over, Karlof returned, but pointed out that he was still short on parts. Zane mentioned that he remembered seeing a lot of spare parts in the prison cell, so Karlof, Cole, and Zane decided to go get them. However, they needed a distraction, and a way to hide that Karlof had left. Chamille made a mannequin of Karlof, and put the upper half under the tarp, making it look like he was still working. At the same time, Gravis dropped ball bearings on the balcony, tripping the guards and allowing them to escape to the prison cell.

Chapter 4[]

The three Masters were on their way to Zane's former prison cell. Suddenly, Cole and Zane turned a corner, but Karlof saw a light and decided to follow it, wondering if it was an easy way out. A bit later, Cole and Zane realized that Karlof had disappeared, and retracing their steps, they noticed the light. They followed it, looking for Karlof, and found the giant snake, with Karlof coiled in its tail.

Chapter 5[]

Cole called out to Karlof, but the Master of Metal told him to stay quiet to avoid waking the snake. Cole said that he had seen it before with the other Ninja, and that it was Clouse's pet. After P.I.X.A.L. analyzed it, she found a point on its head where, if pressed, it would stay asleep. Cole went forward to press on the point while Zane got Karlof out from its tail. They left the snake's chamber, and Cole asked Karlof why he had gone down that path. Karlof stated that he was looking for a quicker escape route for everyone, but after a short discussion, apologized for going off on his own and agreed to continue building the Jet, which, according to Zane, was the only escape plan with a positive success chance. Cole and Zane were able to sneak back into the factory without any problem, but Karlof dropped his bag of parts. It made a loud noise, alerting the guard, but Bolobo and Chamille were able to convince him it was just thunder, with Bolobo stating that he was the Master of Nature, and the expert on things like that, so the guard left. Karlof continued to work on the Jet.

Chapter 6[]

Cole and Zane were talking about food, but Karlof mentioned that he was having an issue with the fuel output, so Zane offered to help. Suddenly, the guards opened the factory door, bringing in new prisoners. Included were Shade, former Master of Shadow, Mr. Pale, former Master of Light, Griffin Turner, former Master of Speed, and Neuro, former Master of Mind. Cole was saddened that they were all captured, but relieved that at least Lloyd, Kai, and Jay were safe. Suddenly, Zugu pushed in Jay, who declared that working in the factory wasn't a punishment if you used positive thinking. Cole and Zane made their way over to Jay, explaining that the guards think they escaped. They explained their plan, of building the Roto Jet, and Jay explained what had happened upstairs. He told them that Nya came to help, and had spied on Chen and Clouse. She found proof that they planned to use the Elements for a spell, but didn't know what it did. Chen discovered that Nya was spying and sent the contestants to the jungle to find her, but had actually just picked them off one by one. Last Jay had heard, Lloyd and Nya managed to escape, and Kai was getting the "special treatment". Zane suggested that Jay help Karlof with the Roto Jet, because of his experience building machines in the junkyard. Jay was able to find a solution to the fuel output problem, but he needed a piece of magnetizable metal, and the only one was around Zugu's waist.

Chapter 7[]

The Elemental Masters began working on a plan to steal the metal, a medallion, from Zugu. Neuro would distract him using weaknesses that he had discovered while previously reading his mind, while Shade casted a shadow next to him. Mr. Pale would be able to hide in the shadow, and using his stealth skills, steal the medallion. Neuro approached Zugu, taking advantage of his self-consciousness regarding the other guards. He asked if they truly respected him, or just feared his muscles, and, caught off guard, Zugu began to talk about his ideas, and how Chen never listens to him. While Zugu was rambling, Shade used a noodle box to cast a shadow next to him, and Mr. Pale snuck behind Zugu and took the medallion. He gave it to Jay, who got to work under the Roto Jet, and Neuro ended his discussion with Zugu, returning to the noodle machines. Suddenly, Zugu began approaching the Roto Jet. Karlof tried to stop him, stating that it was almost ready, but Zugu said he wanted it ready now, for the big celebration. When asked, he explained that Chen had captured Garmadon and Nya and had defeated Lloyd, and they were celebrating.

Chapter 8[]

Zugu pulled off the tarp, despite Karlof's interjections, and was shocked to see the Roto Jet instead of a noodle machine. Cole and Zane into the Roto Jet, and Cole shot bolts at Zugu, but he was able to dodge. Cole then turned onto the balcony, collapsing it and throwing around all the guards. The Masters kept shooting at the guards, and while Karlof continued to add the flight mechanism, they rolled out of the factory. They began to head to the giant snake's lair, trying to save Garmadon and Nya. They busted through the wall, freeing the two prisoners and collapsing the ceiling on top of the snake. Nya hugged Zane, relieved to see him again, then grabbed an Anacondrai Blade from the floor. Garmadon explained that Chen's spell would transform all of his followers into actual Anacondrai, creating an unstoppable force in Ninjago. Karlof continued working on the Roto Jet, working even faster to try and get it to fly.

Chapter 9[]

In Chen's Anacondrai Temple, Kai and Lloyd had been captured and stripped of their powers. However, using a sneak attack, Kai had been able to grab the Staff of Elements, and was able to beat back the Anacondrai Warrior guards. The Staff of Elements glowed, containing all the Elements. As Lloyd lay on the floor, drained of energy, Kai approached him, possessed by the evil of the Staff. Lloyd pleaded with Kai, begging him to destroy the Staff, but Kai refused, stating that it was his turn with all that power. Chen gloated, and goaded Kai into embracing the power, but Kai was suddenly able to break out of the spell. He began questioning himself, before losing control again, and stated that he should have been the Green Ninja. Kai was about to blast Lloyd, when suddenly, the Roto Jet burst through the wall, and one of the wings smacked into Kai, making him drop the Staff. The escaped Elemental Masters and other noodle factory prisoners began to clash with the Anacondrai Warriors, and Jay, Garmadon, and Nya joined them. Finally, Zane entered, joining the fight as well. Chen lunges for the Staff at Kai's feet, but before he can grab it, Nya throws her Anacondrai Blade, shattering the crystal. Beams of light shoot out from the fractured crystal, restoring the Elemental Masters with their powers. The Anacondrai Warriors surrended, unable to compete with the Masters and their powers. However, in all the commotion, Chen and Clouse were able to escape. The Elemental Masters were able to found up all the Anacondrai Warriors, but Garmadon was unable to find Chen. Despite no longer having the Staff of Elements, Garmadon said that Chen was still a threat, and that they shouldn't underestimate him. Cole explained to Kai and Lloyd how Karlof had built the Roto Jet. The Ninja state that they will find Chen once and for all.

Differences from Canon[]

  • On page 48, Mr. Pale is introduced without his Elemental Powers, and is described as no longer being invisible. However, in The Forgotten Element, he is shown as still being invisible even without his powers
  • In the book, Nya is responsible for the destruction of the Staff of Elements, rather than Kai
  • Skylor is not mentioned once throughout the book, despite supposedly being present for several scenes
