“I can feel the gong resonate inside me, Lord Ras, shattering the parts of my soul that hold me back.”
— Cinder to Ras, "Beyond the Phantasm Cave"

Cinder is the current Elemental Master of Smoke, a relative of Ash,[1] and one of Lord Ras' former students. He served as one of his generals of the reformed Wolf Clan. He competed in the Tournament of Sources and is currently incarcerated in the City of Temples.

History[]

Background[]

At some point, Cinder inherited the mantle of the Elemental Master of Smoke from his relative, Ash,[1] though the circumstances surrounding this transition remained veiled in ambiguity.[2]

Lord Ras saw potential in him and welcomed him into his ranks as a new recruit.[2] Because of Cinder's status as an Elemental Master, Ras provided him with the necessary training to perform Shatterspin, a corrupted and advanced form of Spinjitzu.[3] However, since Cinder had not yet fully mastered the technique, he needed the Gong and Mallet of Shattering to unlock to effectively use it.[4]

Ras entrusted Cinder to retrieve the Mallet of Shattering. Determined to fulfill his duty, Cinder went on a series of daring heists, infiltrating various establishments and antiquities stores, where he managed to evade capture by utilizing his mastery over the element of Smoke to outwit security measures, in search of the coveted artifact. Recognizing his prowess and resourcefulness, Intelligent George bestowed upon Cinder the moniker of "Night Ghost," a title that would come to symbolize his elusive nature and stealthy abilities. His exploits eventually led him to Kreel's Junkyard.[2]

The Blood Moon[]

CinderSmokeDoor

Cinder disappears in a puff of smoke

Cinder arrived unbeknownst to Arin, Sora, and Riyu nearby All-Realm Antiques Emporium, eventually gaining their attention. They watched him slip under the door by becoming a cloud of smoke, and emerge just moments later holding the Mallet of Shattering, although they didn't know what it was yet. They confront him, and he laughs, talking about how he was warned that the ninja would catch on to him. He states that he didn't come alone, as two Wolf Mask Warriors drop into the encounter. A battle ensues and Lloyd soon joins, and Cinder uses his Elemental Power of Smoke to fight them. Eventually, he throws a smoke bomb and escapes with the mallet.

Later, he arrives at the Shadow Dojo, where organized rows of Wolf Mask Warriors watch him hand the Mallet of Shattering to Ras.

Cinder vs. Euphrasia

Cinder, in an attempt to retaliate, taunted Euphrasia for losing her advantage. He then used his smoke powers to attack the monk, resulting in her falling off Cloud Kingdom and fracturing her leg.

Upon the arrival of the ninja to halt Ras' plans, Ras swiftly summoned Cinder to confront them. Cinder launched an attack on Kai, who recounted his triumph over Ash. Attempting to strike Kai once more, Cinder was taken aback as Kai effortlessly evaded the blow, momentarily bewildering Cinder. Seizing the opportunity, Kai swiftly incapacitated the general.

However, Cinder donned a Wolf Mask, just as Ras unleashed the energy of the Gong of Shattering, enabling the general to do Shatterspin. With newfound strength, Cinder proceeded to engage the ninja individually, systematically overpowering them one by one. He forcefully hurled Zane towards a sturdy pillar, causing the Nindroid to experience a detrimental short circuit. Cinder fearlessly engaged in combat with Lloyd, skillfully evading his relentless attacks. Cinder managed to break Wyldfyre's leg, further incapacitating her. The battle intensified as Cinder relentlessly pressed on, proving to be a formidable opponent for the ninja, who were forced to retreat.

Beyond the Phantasm Cave[]

In Cloud Kingdom, Cinder undergoes a Shatterspin training with Ras. He unleashes a series of attacks on several clay pots. Ras compliments Cinder's accuracy, and Cinder remarks that he feels the Gong’s effects resonate inside him, shattering the goodness in his soul. He brags to Jordana about being Ras's favorite.

Later, when Jordana informs Ras that she has located the "final component," she is congratulated and brags to Cinder who is nearby. All three walk to the room where Cloud Kingdom has its motor.

In Cloud Kingdom, Cinder engages in another Shatterspin training where he begins to smash several pots, with Ras yelling at him to use more force. He tells Cinder that strength is all that matters in Shatterspin.

After Ras speaks with his master and falls back to the ground, Cinder and Jordana are there to listen to his new orders.

Secrets of the Wyldness[]

The Forest of Spirits[]

Cinder is ordered by Ras to to head down to the Shadow Dojo, destroy the Cloud Kingdom, and kill the Writers of Destiny.

Later, he positions Euphrasia, Suetonius, and three other Cloud Monks as sacrifices for the Forbidden Five to later begin the ritual. Jordana arrives late and informs Ras of Arin’s interference, leading to Ras going after him himself as Cinder teases her for her failure.

Rising Ninja[]

Ras commanded the wolf warriors to make preparations for the Ritual of the Blood Moon, while Cinder took the opportunity to provoke Jordana by pointing out how Ras had rectified her mistake, much to Jordana's frustration. The tension escalated as the ninja removed their Wolf Masks to prevent corruption, catching Cinder's attention, who quickly alerted the Wolf Clan. This led to a fierce battle between the ninja and the Wolf Mask Claw Warriors. Cinder readied himself to don his Wolf Mask and unleash Shatterspin, only to be thwarted by Sora, who knocked the mask out of his grasp and threw him to the ground. Despite Cinder's attempts to escape using Smoke, he got trapped in Sora's Tech Power cage. Determined to break free, Cinder struggled against the cage until he finally managed to break out, causing the Elemental Tech Mech to explode and render Sora unconscious. Seizing the opportunity, Cinder taunted Sora for missing the chance to witness his Shatterspin move again, engaging in a fierce battle with the ninja in a bid to claim his Wolf Mask. His Mask was eventually destroyed by Wyldfyre. In a final act of defiance, Cinder stole another mask from a Wolf Mask Claw Warrior and declared his intent to eradicate the last remnants of goodness within him before putting on the Wolf Mask.

Cinder performed Shatterspin, combining it with Smoke to bring down the ninja. Just as the Master of Smoke was about to deliver the final blow to Nya, Kai intervened, launching a surprise attack with his Rising Dragon that caught him off guard. Despite Cinder's best efforts, he found himself overpowered by Kai's relentless assault, until Ras sent Kai hurling into a portal, creating an opening for Nokt. Evading Lloyd's Spinjitzu attack, Cinder faced another challenge as Lloyd unleashed his own Rising Dragon move, much to Cinder's dismay. Attempting to regain the upper hand, Cinder tried to utilize Shatterspin once more, only to be thwarted by Lloyd's interference. Ultimately during the fight, Lloyd manages to overpower Cinder, leading him to his defeat. As the Ritual of the Blood Moon concluded, the Wolf Clan suffered a loss. However, to their surprise, the Wolf Clan, Nokt, and Cinder were mysteriously transported to an open field by Ras' Master.

The Shape of Motion[]

Cinder fights Nokt in a practice battle using Shatterspin. He is in difficulty against his opponent, who knocks him into the Gong of Shattering and is even about to kill him before Ras shows up and stops the Forbidden Five member with his control implant. When Ras orders them to go again, Cinder nervously backs away when Nokt looks back at him.

They Gather for the Feast[]

Cinder groups up with Jordana and Nokt, and makes a snide comment about Kai, upsetting Wyldfyre. She prepares to attack him, but is held back by Security Bots and warned by Roby.

Later, he arrives alongside Ras and Jordana to where Lloyd defeated an attacker bot, and they throw another one on the pile.

Inside the Maze[]

Cinder purposely bumped into Wyldfyre to get the Ninja expelled but it failed. Cinder was with Jordana and Ras when they accompanied Jay to the arena where he faced off against Nya. He watched as Jay faced Nya, only for him to lose before watching Ras reprimand the former for his failure.

United We Fall[]

Cinder gets rudely awakened by the Ninja, who came to pick up Jay. Cinder simply drinks tea while Ras explained that he banished Jay from the clan for his failure. The following morning, Cinder faced Wyldfyre and won via a combination of Smoke and Shatterspin. Cinder then confronted the ninja to tease them, mainly Wyldfyre before proclaiming Kai as a loser and taunts her by using Heat. He then falls back, feigning being attacked before Roby, Bleckt, and the security bots arrive to exile and disqualify them, only for Zane to invoke a consolation round.

Truth and Lies[]

Cinder surrendering his powers to Sora

Cinder faces against Sora in a puzzle game, where the orb must be delivered to the final platform. Despite using Shatterspin, Cinder failed to reach Sora, who had caught onto the rope first, resulting in Cinder falling. Cinder then surrendered his powers to Sora. However, unlike Jay, Ras continued to let Cinder remain in the Wolf Clan.

The Sword Shatters[]

Cinder watched Zeatrix and Lloyd battle.

Clues and Suspects[]

Cinder looks on as Ras banishes Frak from the Wolf Clan for failing to defeat Sora and not using his Wolf Mask.

The Final Game[]

Wolf Warriors turn

Cinder and the Wolf Warriors being possessed by Rox

Cinder arrives along with many Wolf Mask Warriors summoned by Ras as backup against Nokt and Rox (who was revealed to be possessing Jordana the whole time). However, Rox used her magic to corrupt the Warriors, including Cinder, with ease.

Elements of Betrayal[]

An incarcerated Cinder watches the victory ceremony

Cinder joins the other Wolf Mask Warriors in bowing before Nokt and Rox, until the ninja and remaining Elemental Masters interfere, causing the two to retreat. While the ninja went after them, Cinder remained with the warriors to fight the powerless Masters, until his powers came back to him, only to be incapacitated from behind by Euphrasia. He is then forced to watch the victory ceremony from inside a Vengestone cage with Bleckt and the other imprisoned warriors as Sora was proclaimed champion by default, much to his anger.

Other appearances and mentions[]

Force From the East[]

The Ninja mention Cinder as someone who they saw using Shatterspin.

Fugitives From Madness[]

Cinder was seen in one of Lloyd's visions.

Enter the City of Temples[]

Zane mentions Cinder when the Ninja got to the Dragon Stone Shrine to get to the City of Temples.

Personality[]

Cinder has embraced villainy for all its worth. He happily accepts his soul's goodness being shattered from the Gong of Shattering.

Cinder has been shown to be quite competitive. He deliberately brags to Jordana about becoming Ras's "new favorite" after learning Shatterspin and hints that "there can only be one second-in-command," igniting a rivalry between the two.[5] He also has a tendency to taunt his competitors as he mocks Jordana when she fails to capture Bonzle for the Blood Moon Ritual."[6]

Abilities[]

  • Smoke: Cinder can harness the power of Smoke to alter his body to traverse short distances or transform his body completely into smoke to avoid attacks. He is also able to partially transform his body into smoke to generate smoke attacks.
  • Shatterspin: Cinder has honed his skills in the techniques necessary to strengthen his body, which allows him to use Shatterspin, a unique form of Spinjitzu practiced by Elemental Masters that involves this hardening process. However, since he doesn't have the same level of expertise in Shatterspin as the Forbidden Five, he relies on a Wolf Mask that is energized by the Gong of Shattering to help him perform the technique.[4]
  • Combat: Cinder is skilled in combat, managing to give most of the ninja a struggle. However, the only ninja who managed to actually defeat him in a fair fight was Kai, who defeated his predecessor Ash. Once he obtained Shatterspin, he managed to defeat Kai in one blow. Lloyd on the other hand managed to keep up with Cinder until the Master of Smoke used a well-placed attack that left Lloyd incapacitated. After Kai learned the Rising Dragon, he managed to defeat Cinder once again. Despite his efforts, he was outmatched by Kai and later Lloyd, who managed to knock him out with his Rising Dragon for the rest of the Ritual of the Blood Moon.

Trivia[]

  • He is the second Elemental Master introduced in the show to inherit their elemental power from its previous owner during the timeline of the show. The first was Euphrasia inheriting Wind from Morro as a result of the Merge.
    • He is also the fourth villain to be an Elemental Master. The first was Morro before he turned good and the second and third were the Time Twins.
  • He shares the same hairpiece as Benthomaar's figure, albeit in gray.
  • Cinder’s set and show counterparts have a few small differences between them. In the show, his mouth is smaller, his hair is whiter, his fur collar is a different shape and color than in his Wolf Clan minifigure. The Shatterspin armor present on his Tournament minifigure is backwards compared to how it is in the show; this may be due to the fact that Jordana's Shatterspin armor is also reversed compared to other characters, but this is the case both in the show and sets. His Tournament minifigure also uses a ghost tail in place of legs (presumably to represent becoming smoke), however, he does not exhibit this in the show.
