“Ninja, report in. Were you able to send out the distress calls?”
Wu to the ninja

Distress Calls is the twenty-seventh episode of the fifteenth season of Ninjago and the 207th episode overall.

Synopsis

Racer 7 escorts Cole across Ninjago City to send for help, and Lloyd gives Garmadon a chance to prove he has changed.[1]

Extended: Jay and Nya contact Benthomaar at the harbor while Racer 7 and Vinny escort Cole through Ninjago City to broadcast a distress call to Princess Vania. Lloyd and Garmadon search the sewers for the missing Serpentine, and Lloyd believes his father might be a changed man after Garmadon spares the life of a crystal-infected Serpentine. Master Wu summons the Ninja back to the warehouse.[1]

LEGO's YouTube Channel: While Cole and Vinny try to reach the NGTV broadcast tower, Lloyd apologizes to Garmadon for not understanding his father's change of heart. When Cole fails to send messages to the tower, Master Wu insists it's time to regroup and think of a new plan!

Is there another way for the heroes to save NINJAGO City? Will Lloyd now be able to unlock the new Oni Form?

Lloyd and Garmadon argue about caring and compassion

In the Serpentine's library, Lloyd and Garmadon have no luck of finding any of the Serpentine to call for help. Garmadon still believes that the Serpentine would have interfered, believing that only the Oni Form can work against the Overlord. However, Lloyd still objects by telling Garmadon that he does not understand the definition of compassion and caring for others, due to the fact that he is an Oni. Lloyd leaves a message for the Serpentine just in case, before hearing a thud outside, so the two go and investigate.

Nya tries to send a message to Benthomaar and the Merlopians

At the Ninjago Harbor, Jay and Nya are in a van, and drop a brick onto the brakes and jump out, as the van pushes three Vengestone Guards into the ocean, clearing a pathway for Nya to send a message to Benthomaar. Nya is unsure if the message will transmit, but Jay encourages her to try anyways. Nya gives it an attempt as she reaches her hand in the water, sending two fish off, as Jay and Nya hope that the signal was strong enough.

Blazey recklessly driving through Ninjago City with Cole and Vinny

In Ninjago City, Blazey recklessly drives Vinny's van across the streets, dodging many Vengestone Guards in order to get Cole and Vinny to transmit a message to the Kingdom of Shintaro via the Ninjago News Center. Meanwhile, Lloyd and Garmadon walk around the sewers, only to get ambushed by three crystal-infected Hypnobrai. Lloyd aggressively takes out two of them, while Garmadon traps the other in a barrel. Lloyd was surprised that Garmadon did not destroy the Hypnobrai, to which Garmadon replies that if he was in the Hypnobrai's position, he would not want to be destroyed either, leading Lloyd to believe that Garmadon might be capable of compassion.

Blazey continues her fast and reckless driving through the city, driving by dozens of Vengestone Guards. Soon after, Blazey attempts to drive over a "nearly vertical bridge," before concluding the journey, much to Cole and Vinny's relief. As Lloyd and Garmadon walk through the sewers, Lloyd notices Garmadon isn't holding Christofern anymore, thinking that as long as Garmadon is an Oni, he cannot feel any emotions of compassion or caring. Lloyd admits to only blowing off steam, and decides to return back to the library to fetch the plant.

Wu looks at the Crystal Island

Meanwhile, back at the newspaper warehouse, Skylor watches Kai train the Paperboys, in a similar vein to "Farewell the Sea." Wu uses the radio to ask if the ninja were able to search for allies, but to seemingly no avail from all ends, so he asks for them to all return back to the warehouse to plan another way to to stop the Overlord's forces, as Wu rushes outside of the warehouse, looking at the Crystal Island, wondering if there even is another way to win.

Trivia

  • Narrator: Cole
    • As of this episode, Cole is the last ninja to narrate an episode title in the series.

Continuity

  • This episode marks the third instance someone is seen jumping the canal using the nearly vertical bridge. Previously, Nelson and Antonia used their bikes to jump, while Kai and Kalmaar did the same in a truck, both in the episode "Papergirl."
  • This is the fifth episode, and the fourth episode of this season, that the rainbow crossing makes an appearance, after "Papergirl," "The Council of the Crystal King," "Quittin' Time!" and "Compatible."
  • When Blazey said "Uh oh.” while attempting to jump over the Rainbow Bridge, Cole asks "Uh oh? What does “uh oh” mean?," which is the same thing he asked in "The Real Fall" after Vania said "Uh oh" while spotting another one of the giant spiders.
  • This is also the final episode of the original series where Zane doesn’t appear.
    • This is the final episode of the original series where not all the ninja appear

Errors

  • Lloyd's message for the Serpentine on the blackboard is written upside down.
  • Lloyd mentions the Oni are incapable of caring even though Mystake, a full-blooded Oni gave her life to save them, though it's possible in his frustration that he forgot.
  • Cole refers to Vania as a princess, even though she is a queen.
    • This is the third time this has happened, the first being "Nyad," and the second being "Compatible."
    • Interestingly enough, Blazey calls her a queen, and Cole corrects her, calling her a princess, which is odd considering he was present at her coronation in "The Son of Lilly."
  • Blazey is listed as Racer 7, even though she changed her name.
  • On Lego's YT channel version, the outro is missing.
  • Nya refers to Jay as her Yang even though she is Jay’s Yang.
