“Like a genie, only when he grants you wishes, you'll be wishing you never met him.”

Djinns were a race of mystical beings capable of wish magic and who hailed from the realm of Djinjago. Their kind were wiped out along with their home due to the destruction of its sister realm, the Cursed Realm, leaving Nadakhan and Arrakore as the last known djinns still alive.

History[]

Background[]

The djinns hail from the realm of Djinjago, the sister realm of the Cursed Realm. For a period of time, they would be periodically ruled by a royal line; however, one of their members, Nadakhan, eventually left the realm in pursuit of his own dreams.

Skybound[]

Nadakhan returned to his home realm with his crew, only to find it collapsing. Khanjikhan explained to his son of the state, revealing Djinjago's sister realm the Cursed Realm had been destroyed and now it too will follow. Khanjikhan bestowed upon his son the Djinn Blade before he told his son to avenge them, as he watched his son leave and dying with his people. This left Nadakhan as one of the only known living djinns in existence.

Nadakhan attempted to rebuild his lost home by using parts of Ninjago as a makeshift Djinjago but his efforts were foiled by the ninja.

As a result of Jay's wish to erase the events of the season, Nadakhan was left trapped forever and Khanjikhan would never have the chance to give the Djinn Blade to his son in the first place, resulting in the artifact's destruction and seemingly no chance of spreading the race's legacy.

Dragons Rising, Season 1[]

Arrakore is one of the few who survived the destruction of Djinjago. He managed to capture the only remaining piece of his realm and kept it in a necklace. However, his hope was restored by Sora and Nya, and the piece he had became bigger. He discovered that the stronger the wish magic is, the greater the potential for Djinjago to return to its original state and carry on the legacy of the djinn.

Abilities and traits[]

Djinns are near-ethereal beings that are capable of flight and levitation, not unlike the inhabitants of their sister realm, Ghost Warriors. Djinns have the ability to move at incredibly fast speeds and teleport, making it nearly impossible to land a hit on one unless by tricking the djinn with a fakeout punch, then successfully landing a hit.[1] They also seem to have a great amount of longevity, as evidenced by Khanjikhan having lived since the end of the Stone Wars, although this may be contributed to his ability to grant wishes for himself. Likewise, djinns are able to shape-shift to a minor extent and even duplicate the abilities of those they impersonate, although this is possibly an ability exclusive to the royal line.

Additionally, djinns seem to be relatively immune to most poisons, as a djinn is able to survive against the venom of a Tiger Widow, which would normally kill a human with a single drop, while djinns are only exhausted by it. Though they have different appearances, djinns notably all have ethereal, ghost-like tails, orange or red skin, and black or gray hair, and four arms.

The most notable and iconic ability of a djinn, however, is their ability to grant wishes for others. Djinns are only able to grant three wishes per person and are unable to make others fall in love, cause a person to die, create more wishes for a person, nor can they use a wish for themselves. Djinns may even be able to grant wishes by implanting thoughts in others' minds.[2] However, a djinn and the wisher can use loopholes and wordplay to get around some of these rules through indirect actions However, this not always the case, as sometimes djinns will grant wishes automatically without their own consent, and they are required to do so upon hearing one. They also have the use of powerful magic and can use it for their own desire. [citation needed] It seems it's up to the djinn if the wish works as intended as Nadakhan twists them in cruel ways while Arrakore grants them how the wisher wants.

Sometimes wishes can overpower the set of rules or previous wishes, if said wish is selfless and pure. For example, Jay's final wish reversed the effects of all of the previous wishes he and his friends had made. In addition, the wish re-imprisoned Nadakhan in the Teapot of Tyrahn even though Soto had previously stated that wishing a djinn back into his teapot would be wishing harm upon someone. However, it's likely that individuals who made wishes in the alternate timeline, or at least those who made wishes and who remember it, could not make three more wishes even though the events were undone.[3]

The royal line of Djinn Kings are able to subvert most of these rules entirely, with a King gaining the ability to grant infinite wishes for himself upon marrying another on djinn land. Once the wedding ceremony is fulfilled, the Djinn King's wishes will manifest themselves in the form of blue energy spheres that are thrown at the intended target, depending on the manner and circumstance of the wish. However, it would appear a Djinn King's actions are still restrained by the rules of normal wishing, explaining why Nadakhan did not simply erase the ninja from existence after he gained infinite wishes: this would be causing harm.

Culture[]

Djinns are a group of beings from Djinjago. If they are asked for wishes, the djinns grant them. But there are three rules. They can't wish for death, love or more wishes. It is tradition that once a djinn prince marries he becomes a King and is all powerful with infinite wishes, but the djinn still must grant wishes for others. The Djinn Blade is passed down by royalty with the abilities to take souls from others.

Djinns can befriend Djinjagan Dragons, even giving the dragons names and sharing information about themselves to them.

Trivia[]

  • Currently, the only known djinns are Nadakhan, Khanjikhan, Nadakhan's mother, and Arrakore.
  • Djinns are able to wish for whatever they want except for love, death, and more wishes.
  • Due to Djinn Kings' wishes, Nadakhan has revealed to the ninja that he sought for the ultimate gift, which was unlimited wishes.
  • Zane mentioned there was a way to destroy a djinn, though he was interrupted before he could finish elaborating, and the method was never brought up again.[4]
  • Djinns have aesthetically similar "tails" to those of the Ghost Warriors. This may be due to the fact that both hail from sister realms.
  • Although called "djinn" in the show, they more resemble mythical genies, as the word djinn is derived from an Arabic word meaning ghost, spirit, poltergeist and mostly it means demons and devils; Djinns are mentioned in the Quran, a religious text of Islam.
  • A shapeshifted Nadakhan appeared to use Zane's ice power to freeze part of the Mega Monster Amusement Park roller coaster in "Infamous." Tommy Andreasen gave the explanation that it could be related to magic, which if true would mean djinn magic is able to imitate Elemental Powers.[5][6]
  • The Hageman Brothers have stated that Tox, the Elemental Master of Poison, could have the same effect on a djinn that Tiger Widow venom does.[7]
  • According to Tommy Andreasen and Chris "Doc" Wyatt, a djinn can bring someone back from the Departed Realm.[8][9]
    • When asked if Arrakore would bring back the djinns with his magic, Wyatt stated that he cannot disclose whether the revival of the djinns will actually occur or not.[10]
  • Djinns cannot grant wishes to other djinns.[11]
  • The exact way of referring to the species varies between characters and mediums.
    • The plural form of "djinn" is unclear. For example, Lloyd says both "djinn" and "djinns" in the same scene in "Public Enemy Number One."
    • The name "djinn" is not capitalized in The Book of Spinjitzu but is capitalized in the Dark Island Trilogy in Wu's journal. As The Book of Spinjitzu is more recent, the former way can presently be considered the correct usage.
  • In "The Way Back," Nadakhan creates two statues of past djinn kings, with one of them being of his father, Khanjikhan. It is possible that the other one was of his paternal grandfather, but it is not confirmed.
  • Djinns sometimes call humans "two-leggers" on the basis that humans have legs while they don't.
  • All djinns have the same hairstyle, a ponytail.
  • Djinns can be ticklish.
  • In The Lair of Tanabrax, it was mentioned that djinns have their own language, as Garmadon had lessons with his father about the djinns' language.
