Saving Faith is the eighth episode of the ninth season of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu and the 92nd episode overall. It aired on July 17, 2018 in Singapore, and aired in the United States on August 25, 2018, as part of "Hunted: Part 3."
Synopsis[]
Lloyd and his team plot to take control of the Oni Titan. Meanwhile, in the First Realm, the Ninja fall into Iron Baron's clutches and an old master returns.[1]
Extended: Harumi has outed Mystake as the 'Fake Harumi'. Mystake reveals her true Oni form and battles Garmadon, allowing Skylor to absorb some of his power and escape. In the Realm of Oni and Dragon, the Ninja return to rescue Faith, only to discover it's a trap. The Ninja are caught and strung up on electro-poles. Jay teaches Wu about the importance of humor and staying positive. When Wu is electro-shocked, he's hit with a lifetime of memories, and in a triumphant moment, Master Wu returns and threatens Iron Baron. They make a deal - if Wu gets the armor for Baron, his ninja can be allowed to return home. With the Ninja still restrained, the two set off towards Firstbourne's nest. In Ninjago City, Skylor reunites with Lloyd and they use Garmadon's borrowed powers to seize control of the Oni Titan. They direct the Oni Titan to attack Garmadon's forces with devastating blows. In the attacks, Harumi flees, only to find history repeat itself - a young child and parents are about to be separated in the mayhem, just as it happened to her. In a moment of redemption, Harumi keeps the family together and saves them from harm, only for her to not be so lucky. Witnessing the death of his daughter, Emperor Garmadon retakes control of his Oni Titan, causing Skylor to fall into a coma. Lloyd realizes the only way to save Skylor's life is by stopping his father.[2]
Plot[]
The episode begins directly where the last episode ended, with Skylor "captured" and Mystake posing as Harumi before the real Harumi shows up. The true Harumi unveils that the other is an Oni in disguise, to which Killow restrains her. Mystake and Garmadon denounce one another, with Garmadon challenging her to show her true self. Mystake then transforms into her true Oni form, and viciously fights Garmadon. A battle breaks out, with Skylor attempting to absorb Garmadon's element, which she eventually does after Mystake creates a smokescreen to deceive Garmadon. Skylor leaps from the tower and onto a passing hot air balloon, while Garmadon kills Mystake off-screen.
In the Realm of Oni and Dragons, Wu wants the ninja to rescue Faith. He quotes his father, urging them to "have faith", and they head off despite their objections. They find her buried in the ground from her neck downwards. Wu approaches her, she tries to warn him by mumbling through her gag. Wu removes the gag, but quickly realize it's a trap, and are captured by the Dragon Hunters. As the hunters celebrate their victory, the ninja banter to relieve the stress of the situation. Baron taunts Faith who reveals to the hunters that Iron Baron is only using them, she states he lied about the Oni and possibly killed his allies to get the Dragonbone Blade. Baron quells any growing rebellion, threatening his own forces, and electrocutes the ninja and their allies. In doing so, Wu has an epiphany and suddenly regains all his memories, from his youth up to being lost to time. He breaks free and confronts the Dragon Hunters. Baron negotiates with Wu, claiming that if he finds the Dragon Armor—which can purportedly control the Firstbourne—he'll let them return to Ninjago. Wu agrees and departs with Baron.
Skylor returns to the Resistance's base, where she informs the others that Mystake didn't make it. They then realize the Sons of Garmadon followed her and retreat to the rooftop. From there, Skylor uses Garmadon's element to try and control the Colossus. She eventually "succeeds", as it starts moving towards them, but realizes Garmadon is moving it. The two struggle for control of the behemoth, and at the last second Skylor stops it from destroying the building they're on. She turns it against Garmadon, fighting Killow and Ultra Violet and destroying the Oni Mask of Deception. The Colossus begins to scale Borg Tower, prompting Harumi to warn Garmadon of the impending threat; he refuses to leave, and Harumi flees.
Harumi escapes the tower and uses a zip line to reach a nearby building. While inside, the Colossus crashes into the building, rendering it unstable. She finds a family trying to flee, in a similar fashion to her family's separation during the attack of the Great Devourer. Feeling unbearable guilt and sorrow, Harumi helps the family exit the building through a fire escape, but before she can leave herself, the exit is blocked by rubble. She urges the family to leave and heads to the rooftop. Skylor stops struggling for control of the Colossus after Garmadon's element poisons her. Garmadon suddenly loses control, and the Colossus crashes into the building Harumi is in, making its collapse inevitable.
Harumi is horrified but accepts that she can't save herself as she shares a look with Lloyd, who sadly watches her predicament. The building then collapses, killing Harumi. Garmadon cries out in fury and grief, before declaring that Lloyd can have Ninjago but in ruins. As Lloyd and Nya debate how to help Skylor, Dareth points out that the Colossus is on its way.

Trivia[]
- This is the first episode since "The Golden Weapon" to have two director credits.
- Ultra Violet says the target was last seen at the intersection of Nelson and LaMonica. Nelson LaMonica is one of the producers of Ninjago.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, "No other outcome was ever discussed" regarding Harumi's death.[3]
- According to Tommy Andreasen, the building Harumi stood on was forty floors tall.[4]
Continuity[]
- Mystake and Harumi both die by the end of this episode, both offscreen.
- However, Harumi was later revived by the the Overlord.
- In an ironic twist to the eight episode of the previous season, Harumi succeeded at resurrecting Garmadon without knowing it yet, while here, Garmadon (and to a small extent with Skylor) was unintentionally responsible for Harumi's demise.
- Garmadon actually showed sadness and anger when he witnessed Harumi's death. This also caused him to genuinely want the city's destruction.
- Lloyd also looked concerned and sad when he saw Harumi die, despite all she had done to him, implying that he still had feelings for her.
- This was later confirmed in "A Sinister Shadow."
- The boy and father in the family who Harumi saved were last seen in "Snake Jaguar."
- The family Harumi saved before her death all had the old hairstyles of the ninja but in different colors: the father had Jay's, the mother had Nya's, and the son had Cole's.
- This episode marks the first time an Oni's true face is seen.
- Mystake's face looks like Garmadon's body after he was struck by the lightning and banished to the Underworld as seen in "Battle Between Brothers."
- Mystake's last words are her long-time catchphrase, "Never heard of it."
- When Wu regains his lost memories, several moments from past episodes are shown.
- The flashbacks are from the episodes include;
- Fishing with Garmadon and the First Spinjitzu Master as children in "The Gilded Path."
- Garmadon being bitten by the Great Devourer as a child in "Tick Tock."
- Fighting Garmadon in the Realm of Madness in "Once Bitten, Twice Shy."
- Reading to Lloyd in "Never Trust a Snake."
- Training Nya to become the Water Ninja in "Stiix and Stones."
- Meeting Zane for the first time in "Snake Jaguar."
- Meeting Cole for the first time in "The Jade Princess."
- Meeting Jay for the first time in "How to Build a Dragon."
- Him and Kai walking up to the Monastery of Spinjitzu's doors in "Way of the Ninja."
- Him with the four ninja at the Monastery in "The Golden Weapon."
- Him, the ninja and Nya flying on Flame in "Home."
- Him and Misako jumping onto his dragon in "The Crooked Path."
- Him and Misako in "The Day Ninjago Stood Still."
- Fighting the Time Twins in "Lost in Time."
- In November 2017, Tommy Andreasen asked fans on Twitter which of Wu's memories could be included in such a scene.[5] It is very possible he was gathering ideas for this scene.
- The flashbacks are from the episodes include;
- Jay's line "Master Wu is back, baby!" is based on Garmadon's line "Garmadon is back, baby!" from "The Day Ninjago Stood Still."
Errors[]
- Kathleen Barr's name is misspelled in the credits as "Katleen Barr."
- In the Netflix subtitles, "Firstbourne" is misspelled "Firstborne."
- Some moments in the memory sequence are out of order. Wu is seen fighting Garmadon, reading to Lloyd, and training Nya before he is seen meeting the ninja, and footage from "The Crooked Path" is shown before "The Day Ninjago Stood Still" despite taking place after the latter.
- However, this was likely intentional.
