A trident is a three-pronged spear that is mainly used by the Merlopians.
History[]
Battle of Nine Days[]
During a battle against Wojira, Nyad tried to attack her with a trident, but it broke.
Five Thousand Fathoms Down[]
Kalmaar used a trident to shoot at Glutinous. Later, he and the other Merlopians used their tridents to shoot at Nya and Maya in their APS suits.
The Wrath of Kalmaar[]
Kalmaar used his trident to threaten Nya and Maya if they didn't give the location of the Island of the Keepers. When Gripe comes and startles Kalmaar, he shoots the trident at the top of a pole, letting Nya and Maya to escape.
Long Live the King[]
After Kalmaar became the new King of Merlopia, he replaced his trident with his father's, and it along with the Maaray Guards' tridents changed from blue to red.
Escape from Merlopia[]
When the ninja and Benthomaar arrived at the entrance to the hangar bay, the guards were wielding tridents. However, Benthomaar convinced them that Kalmaar had sent for them, causing them to leave for the throne room. After they entered the hangar bay, the guards used their tridents to attack them.
Meanwhile, in the throne room, Kalmaar went to the throne to pick up his trident, which briefly turned back to its original blue color. Kalmaar angrily pounded his trident on the ground to change it back to red. As he admired his trident, he was startled by Gripe, causing him to accidentally shoot a bolt at the throne and leaving a small burn mark on the seat. As they were speaking, the guards from earlier arrived with their tridents.
Meanwhile, the guards continued to attack the ninja and Benthomaar in the hangar bay. Benthomaar deflected several of their attacks with his spear to protect Maya. Lloyd, in an APS suit, blocked the guards' attacks to allow Benthomaar and Maya to enter the Hydro Bounty while the guards' attacks lowered the APS suit's hull integrity. As the Hydro Bounty left, Lloyd attempted to follow, but the tridents managed to briefly disable the APS suit. However, Lloyd managed to throw the suit's sword at Kalmaar, providing a distraction while he escaped.
The Storm Amulet[]
Kalmaar arrived on the Hydro Bounty and threatened the ninja and Benthomaar with his trident, using it to knock away Benthomaar's spear. After accepting the fake Storm Amulet, he used his trident to destroy the controls so they would be stranded at the Island of the Keepers.
Riddle of the Sphinx[]
Kalmaar uses his trident to blow a hole into the Explorer's Club. He then used his trident to battle against Wu, and hit him with an electrical bolt in the ensuing battle. Meanwhile, the other guards fought against Kai, Cole, Ray, and the members of the Explorer's Club.
Papergirl[]
Kalmaar's forces attacked the citizens of Ninjago City with their tridents. Meanwhile, Kalmaar exited the Explorer's club with the Storm Amulet, but was attacked by Kai, Cole, Wu, and Ray. He used his trident to defend himself, blasting Wu and Kai in the process. Kai then grappled against Kalmaar and his trident, which fired and nearly hit Antonia and Nelson. Kalmaar followed the pair, nearly blasting them multiple times.
Master of the Sea[]
In a flashback showing the Battle of Nine Days, Merlopians allied with the Keepers and the First Spinjitzu Master to attack Wojira. However, their attacks failed, and all seemed lost.
In the present, Kalmaar was ambushed by Wu, Kai, Ray, Cole, and Misako. Kalmaar ordered the guards to attack the ninja. Kai shot some fire blasts, but they proved easily blocked by the tridents. After Kai, Cole, and Ray were blasted off the wharf by a torpedo, Misako was subdued by Kalmaar. Kalmaar threatened her with his trident, while the guards held Kai, Ray, and Cole in the water.
After the Hydro Bounty arrived, Ray kicked a guard off of the Bounty, but was nearly attacked by a guard with a trident. However, Maya quickly dispatched him with a harpoon gun. Zane and P.I.X.A.L. took out a few more guards with their harpoon guns, and Lloyd and Wu used their sword and bo staff, respectively, to grapple with two more. Kalmaar and Nya battled, with the former nearly skewering her with his trident before Benthomaar blocks him with his Benthomaar's spear. Kalmaar fired his trident as a distraction while Gripe blasted Benthomaar in the back with his trident.
The Calm Before the Storm[]
Kalmaar could be seen riding on Wojira's head with his trident, controlling her with his trident.
Assault on Ninjago City[]
Merlopian guards used their tridents to ambush Lloyd in an APS suit, and fought against Kai, Zane, Benthomaar, and Cole in their mini submarines. Later, Kalmaar used his trident to control Wojira, who grounded the Destiny's Bounty, blasted the APS suit Lloyd was piloting, and nearly crushed Jay's sub car before Nya saved him.
Nyad[]
Kalmaar battled with Nya atop Wojira's head, dealing several blows and eventually winning the battle before Nya retreated. Later, the Maaray Guards threatened the Police Commissioner with their tridents while Kalmaar questioned him regarding the whereabouts of the ninja.
The Turn of the Tide[]
Kalmaar continued using his father's trident to control Wojira, and seemingly destroyed Nya with a concentrated electrical blast. He fought against Jay with it before facing off against Benthomaar, managing to destroy his weapon, only for the latter to throw one of his arrows to destroy the trident, freeing Wojira in the process.
P.I.X.A.L. used a trident to fight against the Maaray Guards. Wu used a trident seized by a Merlopian after Jay took his staff to face Kalmaar.
After Nya returned the sea level back to normal, the remains of Kalmaar's trident could be seen in a street in Ninjago City.

A Big Splash[]
When Wu shows a scroll about the Battle of Nine Days to the ninja, it revealed Wojira fighting Nyad, who was wielding a trident.
Abilities[]
- Electrical bolts: Tridents can shoot electrical bolts. These bolts can power down vehicles such as the APS suits. An energy bolt from a trident is fatal if shot at a person, as seen with Trimaar. Despite this, Wu, Nya and Jay were shot by the bolts but did not die, meaning that it may require a certain amount of energy to actually kill someone.
- Control over Wojira: By utilizing the energy in the trident, Kalmaar was able to use the trident to cause pain and take control of Wojira. However this only is with the help of the Wave Amulet, as the user can temporarily control Wojira's actions.[1] However, it has to be constantly stabbed by a weapon's energy and cause pain to Wojira in order to do so. Otherwise, the user would no longer have control of Wojira. Also if the weapon is destroyed or damaged then the weapon is rendered useless.

Trivia[]
- The trident found in Ronin's pawn shop in 71741 Ninjago City Gardens could be a reference to Seabound.
- Nya's spear resembles a trident; being a pole with a sai on the end.
- Kalmaar and Trimaar's tridents are the only ones that feature a sai at the bottom of it.
- In the original spinner pack layout, a golden weapon resembling a larger, more detailed sai can be seen. As it seems the ninja, "Edward", was affiliated with water, it is possible the sai was meant to resemble a trident.[2]
- From "Long Live the King" to "The Turn of the Tide," the coloring of the trident changed depending on what side that the user is on, as all the Merlopians' tridents were changed to red after Kalmaar became king, while it changed back to blue when they were being used by Wu and P.I.X.A.L..
- When Kalmaar is eaten by Wojira, the tridents of the Maaray Guards change back to blue.
- When asked how Kalmaar was able to control Wojira by his trident, Giles Panton replied with a gif that said "magic."[3] However, Tommy Andreasen noted that it was because Kalmaar caused pain to Wojira.[4]
- A reference to Tommy Andreasen's statement is the fact that Wojira often yells out loud when Kalmaar pricks the wave amulet with his trident. This is supposed to illustrate the pain Kalmaar is causing her.
- A total of 11 tridents are included in the Ninjago sets, of which 6 are in 71755 Temple of the Endless Sea.
