The Four Trials[]
After Wu revealed Lloyd's destiny to become the Green Ninja, he declared that Lloyd would have to pass four trials in order to prove his worthiness. For the first trial, Lloyd and Zane would spend a night in the jungle before returning to the Monastery of Spinjitzu the next day, and whoever would return first would pass the test. After Wu departed, Lloyd asked his companion as to what exactly made the test difficult, to which Zane revealed the difficulty laid in the form of dangerous local wildlife. As the pair slept, Garmadon discreetly approached and opened a panel in Zane's back to flip a switch so that the Ice Ninja would emit ultrasonic sounds that would attract certain animals. Not long after, the pair would be awoken by the roaring of vicious animals, prompting them to flee. At Lloyd's suggestion to split up, Zane found himself attacked by all animals, forcing him to subdue them while Lloyd returned first to the monastery, declaring that becoming a ninja would be easier than he thought.
For the second trial, Lloyd and Kai were instructed to meditate atop a snowy mountain until evening. If either broke their stance before sundown, the one who broke their stance would fail the trial. Once Wu departed, Kai removed his clothing, stating that doing so would prepare his body for the cold weather and delay the freezing process. As Lloyd watched Kai in confusion, Garmadon secretly stole Kai's clothes, forcing the red ninja to meditate in the snow in his underwear. After an hour of meditation, Garmadon jolted Lloyd with a bolt of Destruction, warming up his son against the chilling winds. After returning to the monastery at sundown, Wu seemed surprised by Kai's evidentially chilled appearance, thinking to himself that the Ninja of Fire should have done better than he did in this trial.
For the third trial, Lloyd and Cole were set to spar against a set of training robots for one minute each, with Wu judging the pair on their fighting abilities. After Cole began to take a lead against Lloyd however, Garmadon used his abilities to enhance one of the training robot's fighting abilities, crushing Cole in his next match against the machine. At the trial's end, an infuriated Cole destroyed all of the training robots while Jay expressed surprise that Lloyd seemed to be doing better than the other Ninja so far in the trials despite being untrained, a fact that was not lost on Wu who replied that there was still one trial left.
For the fourth and final trial, Lloyd and Jay were led down from the monastery and were instructed to each carry a ruck sack filled with stones before racing back up the mountain to the monastery. Before the would begin however, Wu told both of them to get a quick bite to eat. After the two left, Garmadon made his way to Jay's pack and filled it with extra weights infused with dark power. Unbeknownst to him, however, Wu had secretly remained, hiding behind several bushes to observe the rucksacks. Realizing that Garmadon's meddling was responsible for Lloyd's easy winnings in the first three trials, Wu switched the rucksacks around so that Lloyd would be burdened with the heavier one. As the race began, Lloyd began to tire out very quickly from carrying the heavier pack, slowing down considerably while Jay sped on ahead. Eventually, infuriated by his son's failings in spite of the advantage Garmadon believed he had given him, Garmadon revealed himself to Lloyd and snatched the rucksack from him, declaring that he would carry it to the top for him. Unfortunately, even Garmadon would find himself caught off guard by the immense weight of Lloyd's rucksack as he too struggled to climb to the monastery. Taking turns carrying the rucksack, the Garmadons would finally make it back to the monastery by nightfall, much to the surprise of the other ninja who were wondering if the two would never make it back. Wearily, Garmadon insisted that the climb had taken every last drop of their power and strength, to which Wu slyly implied that he knew about Garmadon's tricks, something his brother would deny.
