These are the relationships of the late king of the Merlopians, Kalmaar.

Family

Trimaar

Kalmaar with his father and brother

Despite being blood related, Trimaar and Kalmaar had many differences in their relationship as father and son. He disagreed with his father about the surface-dwellers who Kalmaar thought were inferior and Trimaar believed that taking revenge on those who "don't bother us" (those on the surface) was wrong. Kalmaar would at times ask his father questions about sunken ships and Wojira, which unsettled him. Kalmaar eventually killed his father over their disagreement and seized his throne, becoming the next king of Merlopia.

Benthomaar

Benthomaar is Kalmaar's adoptive brother. When Kalmaar first met Benthomaar, he gained no interest in him and didn't treat him with same way Trimaar did.

As years went by, Kalmaar continued to ignore Benthomaar until he learned where the Temple of Wojira was at, and decided to use Benthomaar's swimming skills to go there. Once Kalmaar tricked Benthomaar into finding the temple for him, he told him to go and that he'll never consider him as his brother, as he just reminds him of Trimaar's compassion.

After killing their father, Benthomaar was heartbroken that his brother would commit such an act but kept trying to convince him to take a better path. Kalmaar refused and continued to pursue his goals. By the time he had awoken Wojira and attacked Ninjago City, Benthomaar no longer considered him his brother and angrily attacked him.

When Kalmaar was devoured by Wojira, Benthomaar showed a bit of sadness and remorse, implying that he still cares for him.

Kalmaar seemed rather impatient with Gluntinous as he continuously failed to create a replica of the storm amulet.

Wojira (formerly)

“Wojira! I am your king. And I command you to destroy the surface world and all who breathe air! Now, dive!”

At some point in time, Kalmaar learned about the legend of Wojira and became obsessed with finding her, willing to do anything to find and awaken her. During his childhood, he spent most of his time looking at sea scrolls in his room, trying to find any information about Wojira until he learned that her temple was at the Tartarus Trench.

In "Long Live the King," Kalmaar told his father that his reason for trying to awaken Wojira is because he wants to use her to destroy Ninjago and the rest of the surface world.

Enemies

Ninja

“As much as I would relish blasting you all into pieces, I think I have something better in mind. I think it would be far more satisfying to leave you alive, and stranded. So you may live with your failure, and know that all that follows, is your fault!”

Due to the ninja living in the surface, Kalmaar despises them and sees them as his enemies. While explaining why he wants to awaken Wojira, Kalmaar used the ninja as examples of humans coming into existence and inhabiting Ninjago. He later framed the ninja for Trimaar's death and wanted to get rid of them by using the Ripper Sharks.

However, after he learned the real location of the Storm Amulet from Nya, he decided to let them live, wanting them to feel guilty for being responsible for the Great Flood.

Nya

Kalmaar and Nya

Out of all of the Ninja, Nya is the one Kalmaar despises the most. When Kalmaar first met Nya, he instantly despised her due to her being human, but briefly became intrigued upon discovering that she's an Elemental Master of Water. However, after he captured her, he became offended whenever she kept calling him "Calamari" and threatened her with death when she refused to give him the location of the Island of the Keepers. Nya is also the only Ninja he referred to by name.

Wu

Wu and Kalmaar

Similar to the way he acts towards other humans and the ninja, Kalmaar loathed Wu and did not treat him with respect, dismissing him as an "old man".

Antonia

“Of all my foes, of all those who have tried to stop me. You, a common papergirl, came the closest.”

Initially, Kalmaar did not think much of Antonia due to his desire to claim the Storm Amulet. However, he would go on to gain respect towards her since she was able to keep the amulet away from him longer than anyone else. Unknowingly, this also gave Antonia a boost of confidence in her job as a papergirl.
