Kenji was a villager.

The Lair of Tanabrax (flashback)[]
The night Garmadon and Wu arrived at the village, Kenji was kidnapped by the puppets. However, Wu heard him calling for help and the brothers attacked the puppets, freeing Kenji. He ran back to the village, where several of the villagers had awaken at the commotion.
The next night, he trained with the other villagers who had volunteered to go out and get their relatives back.

Outside, a group of what looked like kids — or were they tiny men? — were carrying a man more than twice their size down the street.
Several of the inhabitants had come outside and gathered around the miserable man the puppets had tried to kidnap.
