“Not all places exist to be found, brother. Sometimes, one must revel in the shadows to truly see the light.”

The Land of Madness, also called the Kingdom of Madness, and formerly known as the Realm of Madness and the Dark Realm,[1] was one of the realms before the Merge and is now an island in the Merged Lands. It is a place where evil flourishes, because of an imbalance between the forces of light and darkness. The Mountain of Madness and the Cragling Village are located here, and the native inhabitants include mud monsters and Craglings. The Administration is also located in the realm.

After the Merge, the Land of Madness united with the other realms, being located in the eastern side of the Merged Realms[2] and ended up near a realm belonging to the Earth Dragons, who moved to the Land of Madness after discovering Cragling mud.

History[]

Prior to the series[]

At an unknown point in time, the Realm of Madness came into existence as one of the realms. At some point the First Spinjitzu Master would visit the realm.[3]

Pilot episodes[]

Weapons of Destiny[]

Contrary to what he led the Skulkin to believe, Lord Garmadon's true goal during his time in the Underworld was to escape his prison, not wield the power of all four Golden Weapons. The reason for this became clear when Samukai claimed all of the Golden Weapons and attempted to use them against Garmadon—the combined power of the weapons was beyond anyone's ability to control.

As Samukai disintegrated, Garmadon explained to Master Wu and the ninja that he intended to use the portal to reach a place where the forces of good and evil were unbalanced—there, he could gain the power he needed to wield all four Golden Weapons at once. After a final bitter exchange with his brother, Garmadon fled through the portal, which disappeared once he passed through.

Rise of the Snakes[]

Tick Tock[]

After Lloyd was kidnapped by the Serpentine, Master Wu decided to seek the aid of Lord Garmadon. Traveling to Mystake's Tea Shop in Ninjago City, he purchased some Traveler's Tea and used it to teleport himself to the Realm of Madness. Upon arrival in the dark realm, Master Wu was immediately confronted by Lord Garmadon himself, who had been mutated during his time in the realm.

Once Bitten, Twice Shy[]

Now sporting new armor and an extra set of arms, Garmadon attacked his brother, forcing him into a mud pit with three mud monsters. Before the creatures could envelop him, Master Wu revealed Lloyd's plight, prompting Garmadon to save his brother and agree to a temporary alliance in order to save his son.

With that settled, the brothers set out for the Mountain of Madness, where Garmadon said they could find a portal that would return them to Ninjago. As they walked, Master Wu brought Garmadon up to speed on what was happening in Ninjago, prompting the four-armed villain to express regret that Lloyd had tried to follow in his evil footsteps.

The Royal Blacksmiths[]

After climbing the Mountain of Madness and fending off a Cragling attack, Wu and Garmadon finally reached the portal that would allow them to escape the dimension. At that moment, Garmadon pushed Wu into the portal, gloating that he had only agreed to the alliance so he could return to Ninjago and steal the Golden Weapons—thanks to his time in the Realm of Madness, he could now wield all four at once. With that, Garmadon jumped into the portal himself, reappearing in Ninjago with his brother.

Day of the Great Devourer[]

After several adventures with the ninja and his brother, Lord Garmadon went to Mystake's shop to order some Traveler's Tea, apparently intent on returning to the realm. Before Mystake could fill the order, however, Garmadon had left the shop to aid the ninja against the Great Devourer.

Possession[]

Kingdom Come[]

During Fenwick's explanation of the realms, one of the realms he showed the ninja was the Realm of Madness.

Curseworld, Part II[]

The Realm of Madness was one of the realms Morro and Lloyd went to during their fight over the Realm Crystal.

Between Seasons[]

The Realm of Madness was presumably attacked by the Oni, with all of its inhabitants turned to stone. However the effects reversed when the Ninja defeated the Oni in Ninjago.

Between Series[]

During the Merge, Ninjago experienced the convergence of various realms, including the Realm of Madness. The Realm of Madness was subsequently renamed as the Land of Madness due to now being considered as a land rather than a realm. The land merged with a realm inhabited by the Earth Dragons[4], while the Administration resurfaced.[5]

Dragons Rising, Season 1[]

Beyond Madness[]

When the Destiny's Bounty arrived at the monastery in a damaged state, Lloyd, Arin, Sora, and Riyu head to the Land of Madness, where they come across Craglings and Earth Dragons fighting over the Craglings' mud. Not understanding the situation, they defeat the Craglings before being intercepted by Nya, who brought them to Crag-Nor, who, despite hostility to Riyu, explained the situation before Kai shows up, having led the dragons back to the village. With the Craglings unable to defend their mud pools, the Earth Dragons move to consume them, until Riyu drained their energy to make them leave, resulting in the Craglings apologizing for mistreating the baby dragon.

The Administration[]

Dragons Rising, Season 2[]

The Shape of Motion[]

Arin and Sora break into the Administration in order to find information on where the former's parent were reassigned to. However, the records were taken offline after Jay left. The two are then discovered by the Administration Agents, but they manage to escape.

LEGO.com description[]

The Dark Realm is a shadowy, twisted place in which evil flourishes. Here all rules are turned upside down. After his escape from exile in the Underworld, Lord Garmadon traveled here. He was mutated by the Dark Realm and gained two extra arms, and thus the ability to wield all Four Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu at once. The Dark Realm is home to frightening creatures of evil, like the Mud Monsters and the Craglings. There is a passageway to the NINJAGO world, if you dive into the crater atop the Mountain of Madness.[11]

Trivia[]

  • The Land of Madness had three known methods of entry before the Merge: the portal opened by attempting to wield all four of the Golden Weapons, Traveler's Tea, and the Realm Crystal (destroyed by Lloyd).
  • It also has three methods of exit: a consistent portal atop the Mountain of Madness, Traveler's Tea (if the traveler brought any), and the Realm Crystal (destroyed by Lloyd).
  • A picture of a mud monster, presumably in the Land of Madness, can be seen in the Temple of Airjitzu in "The Temple on Haunted Hill."
  • Tommy Andreasen has referred to it as the Realm of Madness,[12] while LEGO.com has called it the Secret Dimension, Lord Garmadon's Dimension,[13] and the Dark Realm.[11] Decoded later used both "Realm of Madness" and "Dark Realm", with the former being said in "Beasts and Dragons" and the latter in "Rise of Garmadon." The name Realm of Madness was later said for the first time in the show in "A Lesson in Anger."
  • In Rise of the Snakes, a red moon was present in the Realm of Madness, it is possible that it is the same moon present in the Merged Realms before the MergeQuake Storm.
  • Although according to the Craglings that the realm was renamed the Kingdom of Madness following the Merge, it is more commonly referred to as the Land of Madness instead. This is evident in the way characters refer to it whenever they talk about the Land of Madness in later episodes.
    • The reason for this is that the ninja frequently use the terms Kingdom of Madness and Land of Madness interchangeably, and how the classification of the realms as kingdoms or lands is still new concept for them.[14]
