The Land of Monsters, formerly known as the Realm of Monsters, was one of the realms[3] before the Merge and is now part of the Merged Lands. As its name suggests, it is a land populated by many dangerous monsters.
History[]
Background[]
At an unknown point in time, the Realm of Monsters came into existence alongside the rest of the other Sixteen Realms and would be visited by the First Spinjitzu Master at some point.[4]
At some point before the Final Battle, Starteeth migrated from the Realm of Monsters to Ninjago.[5]
Following the Merge, the Realm of Monsters merged with the other realms. Consequently, it was no longer considered a distinct realm and was renamed as the Land of Monsters.
To Become a Monster[]
After arriving in the Land of Monsters following The Merge, Kai fought for his survival as he traveled across these dangerous lands, seeking a way to return home. One day in his journeys, he found himself caught in the middle of a battle between Daidan and the Daidarabotchi. Misinterpreting the situation as the latter being victimized by the former, Kai intervened and prevented Daidan from destroying a crystal egg belonging to the colossal Daidarabotchi.
After learning of Daidan's past history with the beast however, Kai continued to try to dissuade the dragon from continuing her course of action, though she refused and pressed her attack. She would however have a change of heart thanks to Kai's words and break off her attack at the last minute, even flying back to save him from the Daidarabotchi. As the two spoke with one another some time later, Daidan dismissed Kai as being weak, adding that he had made her weak now with his words. When Kai expressed disappointment, arguing that if Daidan considered sparing children to be a weakness, then she could not even begin to grasp what true strength was. In response, Daidan expressed her view that one could not survive in the Land of Monsters while retaining their sense of morality and left him, leaving Kai behind to mutter his hope that Daidan was wrong.
Fallen Master[]
Continuing his journey through the Land of Monsters, Kai eventually made his way into a mysterious cave where he would be attacked by the Centipede monster. In spite of fighting valiantly against the creature, Kai was ultimately defeated in battle and cocooned. After awakening, Kai cut himself free and began to wander the cave in search of an alternate exit, for the monster guarded the way he had come from. After a period of exploration, Kai spotted a glimpse of sunlight and rushed forward, believing it to be another exit. Unfortunately, while it was indeed an exit, it was hardly the safest option due to being nothing more than a crack in the cave wall with an imperceivable drop below. Defeated, Kai retreated back into the cave where he discovered the rusted remains of a mech.
As he inspected the mech, Kai spotted the elemental symbol for fire on its chest and imbued it with some of his own Fire, revitalizing the mech who immediately called out to him, asking if Kai was his master. The Mech then briefly regaled to Kai his story traveling these lands with his master, a prior Master of Fire. When Kai requested the mech for his help, Rusty declined, citing that he had lost both his weapon to fight with and a purpose to fight for. While Kai was able to help Rusty with the former problem, he could only offer some suggestive words of advice to the latter before turning back to confront the Centipede Monster with or without Rusty's help. Fortunately, Rusty came to Kai's aid and defended him against the creature, declaring that he would not fail a fire wielder twice.
As the duo fought against the monster, Kai realized that it was Rusty's fallen master - having long since been transformed into the monster that now stood before them. Although Kai offered to dispatch the fallen master, Rusty declined Kai's offer and dispatched him himself. After slaying the Centipede monster, the two gathered the Fire Master's leftover belongings and constructed a funerary pyre in his honor remembering him for who he once was and not what he became.
False Light[]
Kai and Rusty ventured through the Land of Monsters for several days, with Kai struggling to maintain hope as his compass malfunctioned, leaving him feeling lost. Frustrated, he scolded Rusty for sticking by him, but Rusty explained that he was still searching for his own purpose. Suddenly, they spotted what seemed to be Wu, prompting them to follow it until they reached a lake inhabited by the Gimon-Ogu. The creature used the lake to project images of the ninja, urging Kai to join them. Despite Rusty's warnings, Kai was drawn in. Daidan soon arrived and was captivated by the illusion of her child. The Sea Monster then attempted to ensnare Rusty by showing him the Fire Master, but Rusty saw through the monster's deception and tried to fight back, only to be quickly overpowered.
As the Sea Monster came close to consuming Kai and Daidan, Rusty made the ultimate sacrifice, detonating himself to shatter the illusions. With the Sea Monster weakened, Kai and Daidan worked together to destroy it. With the Sea Monster vanquished, Kai and Daidan stood by the lake, reflecting on their journey. Daidan acknowledged her earlier misconceptions about survival in the Land of Monsters and what true strength really meant. Kai reassured her that Rusty's fire had been reignited within them, symbolizing the hope and courage needed to move forward. Empowered by this newfound belief, Kai was filled with hope of reuniting with his friends.
The Forest of Teeth! (flashback)[]
At some point in time after parting ways with Daidan, Kai reunited with the dragon who joined him in his quest to escape from the Land of Monsters. As the two soared through the skies, they were attacked by a horde of Jungle insects and plummeted down into the Forest of Teeth. There, Kai encountered Fuzz, a young jungle insect, who had the ability to empower Kai's physical strength to great degrees. With Fuzz's empowerment, Kai cut his way through the Forest of Teeth and rejoined Daidan. The trio then began to walk through the forest as Daidan's injuries slowly healed.
The Ruins! (flashback)[]
Kai, Daidan, and their new ally, Fuzz, traversed through the Forest of Teeth until they arrived at the remains of a village. Here, they encountered the Monster pig, which immediately attacked the trio on sight. Although Kai attempted to fight the creature, he was consistently overpowered until a stranger intervened to assist. With help from the stranger and a powerup from Fuzz, Kai was able to slay the Monster pig, but Daidan was taken away by the horde of jungle insects during the fight.
Queen of Monsters! (flashback)[]
Kai and Bolsen ascended the mountain that Daidan was taken to, discovering a cave carved into the cliff-face. Deep within the cave, the pair came face to face with the Queen of Monsters, or as Fuzz referred to her, his "mama!" Angered by this revelation, Kai threw Fuzz to one side of the cave and attempted to attack the Queen, only to be stopped by Bolsen, who revealed himself as being under the Queen's enthrall. Although Kai could not defeat the bounty hunter on his own, with a power-up from Fuzz, he was able to effortlessly dispatch the mercenary. Impressed by Kai's abilities and skills, the Queen agreed with her son that Kai would serve as a more suitable puppet and that Bolsen had since outlived his usefulness.
Fortunately, Kai was able to snap back to his senses and ripped Fuzz off from his back. Together with a freed Bolsen, the two attacked and slew the Queen of Monsters, purifying themselves of her corruption and saving Daidan. As for Fuzz, he fled deeper into the Land of Monsters when the pair turned their sights on him next, claiming that he too was now freed of his mother's influence. As the sun began to set over the horizon, Kai offered Bolsen the opportunity to travel alongside him and Daidan as they sought a way to escape the Land of Monsters. Although appreciative of Kai's offer, Bolsen declined and explained that he sought redemption for the terrible things he did under the enthrall of the Queen of Monsters. Bolsen then parted ways with Kai and Daidan as the latter two continued their journey through the treacherous Land of Monsters.
Other appearances and mentions[]
Writers of Destiny[]
A MergeQuake was causing the Land of Monsters to merge with the Cloud Kingdom, leading to attacks by the tentacled beasts on the Writers of Destiny. After a prolonged battle, the ninja successfully defended the Cloud Kingdom, closing the MergeQuake that had summoned the monsters. This action sent the beasts back to their land, effectively preventing the two lands from merging.
