- “How did you know if you freed it from captivity it would let us go?”
- “Because no one deserves to be held captive. Not even a monster.”
— Wu and Zane, "The Last Voyage" |
Leviathans are enormous cephalopods native to the Endless Sea. They resemble an octopus, apart from having three snake-like eyes on the tip of one tentacle.
History[]
The Last Voyage[]

The Leviathan peering into the tower.
A Leviathan was captured by Samukai in order to guard Dr. Julien in Lighthouse Island and chained to the bottom of the ocean. Shortly after the ninja arrived at the lighthouse, the creature investigated the tower, but the scientist was able to conceal their presence from the creature.

The chained Leviathan.
Later, the Leviathan attacked the Destiny's Bounty when it attempted to escape the island. The ninja were unable to escape the beast's tentacles, but Zane noticed a great chain binding the Leviathan to the seabed. Diving underwater, the White Ninja used a group of nearby Starteeth to destroy the chain—moments later, the freed Leviathan released the Destiny's Bounty. As both the ship and the creature left the island, Master Wu asked Zane how he saved them, to which Zane replied that he had realized that the Leviathan was just as much a prisoner of the island as Dr. Julien had been.
Grave Danger[]
Dwelling in the waters near the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master, a Leviathan noticed the ninja traveling within R.E.X.. It took chase after them, attacking R.E.X. and cracking the windshield with its tentacle. Outmaneuvering the beast, R.E.X. managed to swim through a small hole in a stone formation that the Leviathan attempted to follow in, getting trapped in the process due to its large size and leaving the beast to thrash in frustration.
Dark Island Trilogy, Part 1[]
Traveling along the Dark Island's coast, a Leviathan became exposed to the Dark Matter in the water, causing it to emanate a purple aura. Noticing an arguing Ronin, Jay, Nya, and Sky Pirates near the shore, the beast took advantage of their distraction to swipe up Ronin, intending to devour the mercenary. However, Jay and Nya succeeded in rescuing Ronin, even as the Sky Pirates fled. Summoning his Salvage M.E.C. to his aid, Ronin proceeded to fire at the Leviathan, wounding and scaring it off from the coastline.
The Clean-up![]
Two days after the Day of the Departed, a Leviathan, entangled in chains of an old crane and affected by the Dark Matter, attacks the Ninjago Harbor, but returns to the sea after being freed from the chains by the ninja.
Tentacles Below![]
P.I.X.A.L. informs the ninja that a Leviathan was able to infiltrate in the city's sewer system during the flood and is causing some chaos. The ninja later come to the city and were able to save the Commissioner from the creature's tentacle. The ninja later got changed in their scuba suits and went in the sewers.
They later discovered that the creature that was in the sewers is actually a baby Leviathan. The ninja tried to fight the creature but later decided to try to free it, after a couple of failed attempts, the ninja decided to use Kai and Zane's elemental powers to try to make a small tidal wave. The ninja were able to bring the baby Leviathan through the tunnels but later realized that the only way to get out of the sewers is through a hole which is too high to reach. When all hope seemed lost the Leviathan that Zane freed from Lighthouse Island arrived, the ninja also discovered that the Leviathan that were trying to save is actually its child. The Leviathan pulled the ninja out of the tunnel after recognizing Zane.
The ninja thanked the Leviathans and realized that they were on Lighthouse Island so instead of using the tunnel to go back to the city, they could find a radio to contact P.I.X.A.L. to pick them up. Lloyd later doubted in himself if he should still lead the ninja after the previous failed plans to help the baby Leviathan.
