The Monastery of Gates is a monastery located outside of the City of Temples in Ninjago. It has a portal gate for each of the Sixteen Realms hence its name.

History

Dragons Rising, Season 2

Truth and Lies

The evening Cole loses his match against Frak, a portion of Wu's spirit leads him to the Monastery of Gates.

Clues and Suspects

Arin and Cole travel to the Monastery of Gates after Sora receives a coded message from Jordana, who is trying to resist Rox's Possession, stating that the missing dragon horns are located in the monastery. With no way across, Cole steals the Elemental Earth Mech from the museum to create a bridge with the excess elemental energy left in the mech's system and comes across Wu's spirit.

The Final Game

Arin and Cole continue their exhibition into the monastery and find the missing dragon horns hung above on the ceiling, here they also find out from Wu that he caused the Merge before the latter scatters parts of his spirit across many gates.

Elements of Betrayal

After Nokt and Rox take over the games, the ninja flee to the monastery where the rest of the Forbidden Five are freed. With her connection to the dragon ivory found in the horns and Riyu, Nya uses it to bring Kai and Bonzle back from the Nether-Space as well before Kai fights Nokt. However, just as the latter had the advantage, Roby used the Elemental Cup to strip him of his seized powers and return them to their rightful owners. As the Forbidden Five retreat to the Cloud Kingdom gate, Ras tries to intervene, but Nokt knocks him out and drags him to the portal. Arin, still desperate to find his parents, picks up Ras' hammer and goes after them before the portal explodes and scatters them all in different realms.

Dragons Rising, Season 3

I Alone Can Save Them

Kai, Nya, and Wyldfyre traveled to the Monastery of Gates from the Monastery of Spinjitzu after receiving word of Roby's condition. As they existed the portal gate, Nya noticed that a new portal gate to the First Land Monastery was now active, but Wyldfyre pressed for them to see Roby, stressing that he was more important than a "stupid gate."

Chaos Unchained

Wyldfyre flew the Mech Storm Rider to the Monastery of Gates to meet up with the Ninja in the First Land to help save the world to battle Thunderfang.

The Vault of Focus

The Ninja arrived at the Monastery of Gates to go to their respective destinations, with Arin and Lloyd going to the Spectral Lands with the Unbidden Storm while the others; Wyldfyre and Sora head to Djinjago to wake the tan half and Nya and Jay go to Mysterium to wake the purple half of the Arc Dragon of Focus. Although Nya ended up going by herself after a fight with Jay since they haven't held their end of the bargin; of getting him to Ras, paying him, and Nya driving him crazy.

Chaos Reigns

Ras traveled to the Monastery of Gates and disrupted the portal gates, scattering the ninja across three different realms.

Trivia

• It is the fourth portal gate monastery to appear in the series, following the Monastery of Spinjitzu, the Monastery of Imperium and the Monastery of Mysterium.
• Chris "Doc" Wyatt justified the presence of only 16 gates in the Monastery of Gates by stating "If there are 17 monasteries, and you're in one of the monasteries, you only need 16 doors to get to all the other ones." Indeed since the The Merge, there are only 16 realms left because the Cursed Realm and the Departed Realm merged into the Spectral Lands, so there are only 16 doors needed to access the 16 monasteries of the 16 realms, the Monastery of Gates working as an exceptional 17th monastery serving the other 16.
  • When asked, he stated that the monastery being in Ninjago was an intentional detail, and that it would make more sense once more of the Merged Realms are explored.
