Monastery of Spinjitzu | Wu's temple |
The Monastery of Spinjitzu is a temple built atop the tallest of the Mountains of Impossible Height in the south of Ninjago, and the home of the Ninja. It originally served as the home of the First Spinjitzu Master, who raised his sons Garmadon and Wu within its protective walls. While here, a young Garmadon was corrupted by the venom of the young Great Devourer. After their father passed away, Wu and Garmadon inherited the monastery, with Wu using it to train Morro while Garmadon trained under Master Chen. When Garmadon's corruption consumed him, he tried stealing the Golden Weapons; after a fight with Wu, he was banished to the Underworld.
Around a decade later, Wu assembled a team of ninja comprised of Cole, Kai, Jay, and Zane. The group used the monastery as their headquarters before it was burned down by the Hypnobrai tribe. Much later on, the ninja briefly met at the monastery's ruins after Nadakhan framed them for a series of crimes. Due to Jay's final wish, recent events were undone and this meeting never happened. On the Day of the Departed, Wu returned to the monastery to commemorate his father. While there, he was faced with Morro, who sought his help to counteract Yang's plans. When Acronix returned, and the ninja were fighting him, Kai accidentally set the monastery on fire again.
Sometime after the resurrected Garmadon was defeated, the monastery was rebuilt by the ninja, and a mural of most of their past adventures up to the most recent one of the time was painted on the temple's wall.
A year after the Great Flood, the monastery was raided by the Council of the Crystal King, where they stole the Golden Weapons before having Crystal Spiders self destruct in the hangar bay, destroying the monastery for the second time. After the final battle against the Overlord, the ninja and their allies rebuilt the monastery.
Sometime after the monastery was rebuilt, the Merge soon occurred which dramatically transformed its layout; destroying most of Wu's scrolls, and adding a pond underneath the dragon statue, among other things. Years afterwards, Arin and Sora started to train at the monastery under the teachings of Lloyd. Soon after, a secret temple is revealed beneath the monastery, leading to a portal to the Monastery of Imperium that was wide enough to make room for Wyldfyre and the dragons they freed from Imperium. And as Lloyd struggles with maintaining the monastery, Alfonzo Frohicky moves in to assist him.
History[]
Prior to the series[]
Some time after Aspheera was buried in the pyramid, the First Spinjitzu Master climbed up a mountain and built the monastery, calling it the Monastery of Spinjitzu.
One day, when Wu and Garmadon were young, they were sparring using their father's katanas in the courtyard. During the fight, Garmadon disarmed his brother and sent the katana flying over the wall.[2]
Unbeknownst to the brothers, a future version of Wu had just been transported outside the monastery along with the Time Twins, Acronix and Krux, who both fought Wu as the young Great Devourer watched them fight. When young Wu's sword flew over the wall, future Wu stopped Acronix from picking it up and lamented that while he wished he could change this moment, as doing so would prevent Garmadon's transformation to evil, he knew he could not. Krux attacked Wu, inadvertently activating Wu's temporal energy and transporting the three to another point in time.[3]
Fearing what lay outside, the younger brother refused to retrieve it, so Garmadon went himself. It was there that he was bitten by the Great Devourer and infected with evil. The First Spinjitzu Master eventually found him, though was unable to cure his son who slowly fell under the Devourer's evil influence.[2]
During Wu's training in the monastery, he discovered what damage effects Spinjitzu could do if it is not used properly. As he tried a movement called "mantis kick", he turned his pelvis more than he had and kicked Garmadon so that it flew over the supporting beam and almost the entire roof fell on him. Garmadon then attacked Wu with such anger as Wu had never seen before. In anger he did not use Spinjitzu properly and almost destroyed the whole monastery. However, his father managed to stop him.[4]
The First Spinjitzu Master eventually died and the monastery was left in the care of his sons. Around a millenium later, Garmadon left to train under Master Chen, and Wu encountered a young child, Morro, who was looking through the monastery's trash cans in search of food. Wu took pity on him and trained him in the ways of the ninja. He soon discovered that Morro was a descendant of the Elemental Master of Wind and believed him to be the Green Ninja. This ended up being his greatest regret as the thought of the power that came with the title made Morro incredibly arrogant and he flew into a fit of rage when the Golden Weapons did not choose him. Wu left the monastery's gates open for Morro to return from his journey to find the First Spinjitzu Master's tomb, but he never did.[1]
After Garmadon returned and after the Elemental Alliance's victory over the Serpentine War, the Masters went back to the monastery. When the Time Twins betrayed the other Masters, Wu and Garmadon used four blades forged from Chronosteel to defeat the twins at the monastery and strip them of their powers, and the twins fled into the temporal vortex and were presumed lost in time along with the blades.[5]
Immediately after this, however, the Time Twins from forty years in the future arrived in a snake mech at the monastery and attacked the Elemental Masters. Ultimately, thanks to the efforts of Kai and Nya, the future masters of Fire and Water, the twins were forced to retreat from the era and Wu told his younger self to gather Obscuritea to erase everyone's memories to restore the timeline.[6]
Years later, Garmadon and Wu fought over the Golden Weapons in the monastery before Wu's kimono saved him and trapped Garmadon in the Underworld.[7]

Rise of the Snakes[]
Some time after the ninja returned to Ninjago, pens for their dragons were carved out of the mountain below the monastery.
With Ninjago in an era of peace, the ninja spent most of their time playing video games in the monastery's living room while Wu spent his time meditating in his quarters. This made them ill equipped for when Nya arrived with news that Garmadon had returned and they were sent fumbling around when attempting to go after him.
While the ninja were gone, Nya used the time to practice on the training course, though was forced to give it up when the ninja returned and intended to hold a Green Ninja tournament in the courtyard.

After the ninja were framed for a crime spree, they met up at the ruins of the monastery to discuss their next steps.
Day of the Departed[]
Wu later returned to the monastery's ruins on the Day of the Departed in order to honor the memory of his father. As Wu contemplated the meaning of the eclipse, he was approached by Morro. Wu initially expected a confrontation with his former student, only to learn that Morro had come to warn him regarding Yang's intentions and the peril faced by the ninja. The two then left on the Destiny's Bounty.
The Hands of Time[]
The Hands of Time[]
Wu would return to the monastery, which now had several flowers around the area. As Wu looked at his watch, a vortex opened above the monastery, where Acronix landed in the center of the courtyard. Noticing how old Wu was since he last saw him, Acronix taunted him before he also told the elderly master that his monastery has seen better days, something that annoyed Wu.
At the Ninjago Museum of History, Cole discovers a portrait of Young Garmadon and Wu fighting two unknown men at the monastery. There, P.I.X.A.L. analyzes the picture, saying it dates back forty years during the Serpentine War. Eventually, Dr. Saunders enters the room, with Lloyd questioning the portrait. Saunders states that it holds no historical significance, saying it was a myth; a folktale. Saunders explains the myth involved two warriors referred to as "The Hands of Time," saying they could control time.
Back at the monastery, Wu and Acronix get into a fight, where they fought all around the ruins of the monastery. Eventually, the Forward Time Blade lands in the center courtyard, causing time to skip an entire minute. There, Acronix takes ahold of the weapon and uses it to strike Wu with a "Time Punch," sending him into the rubble. Eventually, Acronix knocks Wu off the cliff holding the monastery, where he managed to grab ahold of a branch.
Eventually, the ninja arrive in the Destiny's Bounty, where they eventually fight Acronix. In their ensuing battle, the monastery catches fire again, with Jay stating "this place can't take a break". Eventually, Acronix uses the Time Blade to escape the monastery. The group eventually search the area, with Cole finding Wu hanging for his life. As the branch broke off, Wu started to fall, but was saved just in time by Cole. After Wu explains they don't have much time, they leave the monastery.

When they went to visit him, they saw Firstbourne crash on the side of the mountain with Faith in her claw. They carried the latter inside the monastery to have her heal.
Endings[]
The ninja and Garmadon return to the monastery, and soon the Oni arrive. The ninja fight them on the steps leading to the monastery, but the Oni drive them back into the monastery. With no options left, the ninja use the Tornado of Creation and successfully get rid of the Oni. They celebrate and make a new mural on the wall.
Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu[]
Wasted True Potential[]
Inside the monastery, the ninja are seen playing video games before using the Bell of Divinity as a hot tub. This causes an angry Wu to demand an emergency meeting back at the monastery.
Inside the monastery, Wu tells the ninja that they have become incredibly lazy and challenges the ninja to withstand time in a room with a chicken. When Wu leaves, the chicken is released and electrocutes them before they are able to trap his pet.
Throughout the evening, the ninja are forced to dodge traps that Wu set in order to stay in shape; however, most of the ninja failed at recognizing the traps. By the next day, the ninja were humiliated by Wu and decide to compromise with Wu to see if there are other ways to prove their courage.
The ninja find Wu in the courtyards and ask if there are other ways to prove their courage. Wu decides to make an exception and allow the ninja to fight Wu. Despite Wu being outnumbered, he still soundly defeated all the ninja due to their lack of training over the past month with pure skill despite their usage of their powers. Wu then unleashes his chicken upon the ninja to punish them for failure as they realize the truth of Wu's words and they scream as they are electrocuted.
Questing for Quests[]
While Master Wu is meditating, Lloyd comes in and asks for advice on getting back into shape. This angers Wu and he tells Lloyd to find the solution himself.
Back at the courtyard, the ninja are training until Lloyd comes back and to no success is not able to get any advice from Wu, so Jay decides the ninja need to brainstorm in a calm environment which is the hot tub.
In the hot tub, Kai suggests they need a villain in order to get into form, but the ninja realize they have defeated most of the villains such as former Sons of Garmadon members and Chen, and while Lord Garmadon is still active, they decide he is no longer a threat. In addition, they are too lazy to search for Pythor as his whereabouts are unknown. Zane then proposes that they ask the Police Commissioner to see if there are any criminals to catch.
After failing to find anything to do, the ninja return to the monastery and turn on the TV. Luckily, they found a news reporting talking about the pyramid that Clutch Powers found. When asked if he was going to explore it, the archeologist declined the opportunity citing that only a ninja can venture inside the unknown. This gives the ninja their quest in order to get back into shape.
A Rocky Start[]
After finding their quest, the ninja immediately begin packing for the journey. After packing too many belongings, Wu questions their future whereabouts until P.I.X.A.L. proposes that they should try out their new vehicles.
The ninja, Wu, and P.I.X.A.L. enter the Game Room which ends up holding a secret elevator leading to the hangar bay Once they arrived, the ninja are excited about their new base and begin exploring. After finding the Land Bounty, the ninja head out with it as well as the Rock Cycle and the ATV.
The News Never Sleeps![]
After a long journey to the Monastery of Spinjitzu, Antonia and Nelson arrive to warn Master Wu that the ninja are trapped in a mysterious pyramid and need help. Wu promises to send P.I.X.A.L. to aid the ninja and ends up complementing Nelson for his courage and even comparing him to Lloyd. After Wu bids farewell, the two head back down to their homes.

After Wu revealed that he was the "Treacherous Deceiver," he begins to tell them about how he met Aspheera, taught her Spinjitzu, and defeated her using Forbidden Spinjitzu.
Under Siege[]
The monastery gets under attack by Aspheera and the Pyro Vipers and after some failed attempts at defending the gate, Cole, Jay, Kai, Wu, and P.I.X.A.L. retreated to the hangar bay.
After ransacking the monastery and not finding Wu, Aspheera ejects fire at Char, but he dodges, hitting the dart board instead and revealing the elevator to the hangar bay. Once Aspheera noticed, Char presses the button for them to get inside the elevator, but the elevator wouldn't open due to Aspheera accidently eradicating the button.
A Cold Goodbye[]
The ninja try to plead with Wu in going to the Never-Realm, but Wu holds his ground saying is isn't willing to risk any more lives after he lost Zane. Lloyd seemingly agrees with his uncle's request and tells him to make a plan for his journey before rushing in.
Later, Lloyd is able to steal the Traveler's Tea needed to return back to Ninjago, so the ninja head down to the hangar bay.
The Kaiju Protocol[]
At the monastery, P.I.X.A.L. and Wu try to brew Traveler's Tea strong enough to create a portal to the Never-Realm, but failed multiple times. They accidentally released the Preeminent, but they were able to return it after P.I.X.A.L. defeated her.
Awakenings[]
Wu was still upset over the ninja's status and looks back a picture to remember them all. P.I.X.A.L. came running into the room, telling him to come quickly, and he followed her out. They found themselves looking at a pink berry-shaped portal and were overjoyed when they saw the ninja coming out of it. After they embraced each other, they waited for Cole and Lloyd to return.

He ends up doing it anyways. After he is finished, Wu comes out of the leaves, but doesn't say a word as he heads back inside.
Wu sits as if he's depressed which catches the eyes of Lloyd and Misako. They ask why he feels down, and he talks about the ninja not needing a master anymore after their previous missions which didn't require Wu's help.
The rest of the ninja get a letter from the Postman telling them they've been invited to the Kingdom of Shintaro. The ninja are excited and want Wu to attend as well, but he doesn't want to go. Misako then forces Wu to attend and stares him down.

Cecil Putnam went to the monastery to tell Lloyd and the others that the Explorer's Club canceled Misako's membership.
The Virtues of Spinjitzu[]
Curiosity[]
Jay and Kai challenge each other to see who can chop the most bricks with the winner receiving the last cookie. Although Kai was able to win, Wu entered the courtyard to see the monastery walls with a hole and the two not meditating on the six Virtues of Spinjitzu. The rest of the ninja entered as well and after not being able to recall the six virtues, they are forced to meditate.
While meditating, Wu attended to a knock on the door and the ninja continue meditating. However, Nya kept hearing a roar and checked it out. She and the ninja were shocked to see Wu grasped by a green dragon. The ninja fought the dragon, but the dragon was able to escape through a portal with the ninja following.
Courage[]
Using the power of Creation, Wu removed the illusion and the ninja found themselves at the Monastery of Spinjitzu.
Later, the ninja reconstructed the destroyed wall.
Seabound[]
A Big Splash[]
When Nya accidentally starts the hangar bay fire system, Wu and the ninja head to the library in the monastery. Wu then searched the scrolls for information on what could have caused Nya's problems with the Water. When he finds what he was looking for, a scroll about Wojira. Then he puts it on the table and examines it with a magnifying glass. Eventually, they decide together that they should call Kai and Nya's mom, who could help her.
Meanwhile, Nya is training in the courtyard, using a wooden dummy to hit. When Kai comes to see her, she destroys the wooden dummy and enters the monastery. As he walks past the bathroom, she accidentally heats the entire toilet and also causes a splash of tap water in the kitchen where Zane is washing the dishes. When she arrives in the relaxation room, where Cole plays video games, she causes a splash of water from the bottles that have been placed on the table. When she then enters the courtyard and approaches the door, she encounters the ninja and Wu talking to her. She then opens the gate and notices her mother and father, who is, however, wrapped in luggage. Both then enter the monastery.
The Call of the Deep[]
Early in the morning, Maya enters her daughter's room, only to find that Nya is sleeping with Wu's chicken in a bed surrounded by a mess. She gets scared, but works her whole room and chases the chicken down the hall. Then she pulls Nya out of bed and starts warming up, hoping her daughter will do the same. However, Nya goes to bed again.
A little later, Nya comes to the kitchen, where she finds Maya cooking breakfast. She then loads seaweed and tofu pancakes on a plate and gives it to her daughter to eat. However, when Nya does not want to, she puts the food in her mouth.
Later, they build a bucket of water in the courtyard and train together. When Nya does not imitate her mother's movements enough, Maya takes Wu's staff and uses it to improve her movements. However, Nya is angry with her and with her power she pushes water into the air.
In a short time, Nya comes to the library, where Wu and Misako start looking in the books for something that could help her. Finally, Wu hands her a book and a scroll, and Misako tells her to talk to her mother and explain that she is no longer small. Nya finally obeys, hands over a book and a scroll to Misako, and goes to see her mother.
Meanwhile, Kai was playing Lava Zombies with Ray in the relaxation room when Nya arrives and talks to them. Maya then enters the room, who carries breakfast sandwiches for her son and husband.
When an energetic wave appears from the sea, it reaches the monastery. Lloyd tries to wash the dishes in the kitchen, but a wave of energy destroys the tap and the water starts to splash. Meanwhile, Jay goes to clean the toilet, but the water foams out of it and floods the bathroom.
Later, all the ninja and Wu wash the relaxation room and the pool table, which were flooded with water. Nya then comes to the room, and shortly after, Zane and P.I.X.A.L. from the lift from the hangar bay to let them know what happened in the sea.
Unsinkable[]
When Nya, Jay, Lloyd, and Zane decided to go to the Tartarus Trench, Nya goes to say goodbye to her parents and brother, who remain in the monastery. She says goodbye to them in the relaxation room while Ray and Kai played Prime Empire. Cole then joins them and agrees to stay in the monastery. Nya then leaves the room for the hallway, but Maya follows her. Eventually, they say goodbye and Nya leaves the monastery.

Upon obtaining them, The Mechanic sets some crystal spiders to self-destruct in two minutes. One of P.I.X.A.L.'s MiniPix manage to drag the former, Wu and Skylor, but was unable to find Nya, who managed to exit in her Samurai X Mech before the monastery blew up.

During their first day of training, despite a little problem with the gears, Arin and Sora ran the course. While Arin performed exceptionally well, Sora, due to lack of sleep, struggled so much that she face planted into a wall, was thrown into the pond, and fell asleep on a column that Lloyd had to jab her rear end to wake up, only to bounce on the platforms.
After finishing for the day, Sora persuades Arin to come to the Crossroads Carnival, bringing Riyu along.

The Power Within[]
Lloyd and Riyu return after freeing the Source Dragon from underneath Imperium, where the former speaks with Arin, who then took off to grab his finished pies to give to the group in celebration for stopping the MergeQuake Storm.
Appearance[]
The Monastery was built atop the tallest of the Mountains of Impossible Height. With the only means of accessing it being a winding set of stairs carved out of the Mountain, reaching it was an incredibly tedious venture, especially for the Postman who had to scale it daily. When Wu and Garmadon were children, the outside of the monastery was a grassy area with shrubbery, and there appeared to be more ground outside than there is currently.
The Monastery is hexagonal in shape, with the main building built out of the three back walls. A tall white wall with red highlights and black shingle roofing protected the other three sides with a heavy wooded door carved out of the center one. Between the wall and the building was a large courtyard that held a retractable training course, which could be activated using a secret button in a dragon statue by the main gate.
Due to the reconstruction of the monastery after it's destruction by the Council of the Crystal King, the Monastery's mural was removed and the monastery underwent some design changes and modernization such as the change of shape of the door, the ark and the roofs.[8]
Following the Merge the monastery underwent significant alterations, resulting in its resemblance to a distinct monastery in each realm. Notable changes include the addition of a pond beneath the dragon statue, the replacement of the main building's door with two wooden doors, the emergence of a mixture of architecture visible on the pillars in the library (three trunk, bricks pillars, metal pillars) and the emergence of vegetation on roofs and on the ground.

Areas[]
Courtyard[]
Between the walls of the monastery there is a courtyard, which consists of stone paving with the shape of two connected dragons. In the middle is a golden statue of a dragon, which is the same as the one on the roof of the First Spinjitzu Master's house. The wind also often brings a lot of orange leaves to the courtyard, which must be washed away.
As a result of the Merge, the courtyard has undergone some changes like the training course or the appearance of a pond underneath the dragon statue.
Originally, there was an even smaller statue by the door, which when opened, revealed a red button that activated the training course. When pressed, the golden statue protruded in the middle, revealing many mechanics for training ninja. During the renovation of the monastery, this function was probably removed. When Lloyd started to train Arin and Sora, one of the tiles of the courtyard was a button for the training course.
At the door to the monastery there is a small sitting area with a teapot and cups. Wu often sits there watching the ninja during their training.
Ninjago history mural[]
On one of the outer walls of the monastery there was a mural painted by monks on Wu's instructions. The painting depicts in two rows several major events and battles the ninja have faced. The final painting was created by ninja after the defeat of the Oni. It consists of their colorful hands arranged in a lotus flower.
At some point before the Merge,[13] the mural was removed.
Hangar bay[]
After the Oni's invasion, the hangar bay was created by P.I.X.A.L. in order to store all the vehicles such as the Destiny's Bounty, Land Bounty, and the Samurai X Mech.
Dragon stables and portal gate[]
This new area appeared after the Merge. It is a cave accessible with the Hangar bay elevator and where there are stables for dragons and the big portal gate which allows access to other realms. After the liberation of the dragons from the City of Imperium, Wyldfyre and the dragons started living here.
Tower[]
Located at the pinnacle of the Monastery, a tower once bore resemblance to the tower roof of the First Spinjitzu Master's house. Following the Merge, the tower underwent a renovation to emulate the unique architectural style of a monasteries in each of the realm.
Blacksmith workshop[]
A blacksmith workshop is somewhere within the Monastery. It was where the Golden Armor was melted and reforged back into the Golden Weapons.

Rebuilt monastery[]
Post-Merge monastery[]
Official description[]
A small temple in the Mountains of Impossible Height range, which formerly served as the home for the First Spinjitzu Master and his sons, Wu and Garmadon. The battle between the two youths took place here, leading to Garmadon’s banishment to the Underworld. The monastery could be reached only via a winding staircase that scaled the mountain. Carved into the rock below the monastery were pens where the four ninja kept their dragons. The monastery was eventually burnt down by the Hypnobrai.[14]
Appearances[]
Behind the scenes[]
- When asked if there is a chance we could get a full interior look of the WildBrain Monastery of Spinjitzu, Tommy Andreasen replied: "Cgi sets aren't built like that. We have rooms and halls but no layout."[15]
- When a fan mentioned that the monastery looks larger on the inside than on the outside, Tommy Andreasen said "It just superior feng shui and clever use of colours. Master Wu is a master of that. That's my explanation and I'm sticking to it!"[16]
Trivia[]
- The ninja, together with Wu, rebuild the Monastery in Fired Up!.
- It was then again destroyed by the Council of the Crystal King in "The Fall of the Monastery," before being rebuilt again with help from the citizens of Ninjago in "Roots."
- According to Master Wu in Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu, only the most essential and important people, places, and things go on the murals.
- The monastery originally contained several enormous bells.[17]
- In March of the Oni, all rooms in the monastery are entered from the outside, but in Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, the rooms are connected by a corridor.
- Despite the fact that in the original monastery the ninja lived together in one room, in Season 11 it turns out that the ninja have their own rooms.
- In Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, Master of the Mountain, and The Island, the story of the ninja always starts in the monastery. According to Tommy Andreasen, it's because "We like our beloved characters to rest a bit. Who would deny them that after all their hard work? "[18]
- From Master of the Mountain to Seabound, the title card of the first episode in the season also always appeared above or below the monastery.
- Each of the three relaxation rooms included a TV, a couch and pizza thrown on the floor.
- The burned monastery seems to be much smaller than the original version.[19]
- Since Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, the interior of the monastery is shown in every season, except Prime Empire, where only the exterior is shown.
- The monastery is located south of Ninjago City.[20]
