The Nether-Space is a void outside of the Merged Realms, regarded as a prison dimension. Escape from the Nether-Space is considered to be harder than escape from the Departed Realm, and only a Ritual of the Blood Moon or a combination of a substantial amount of Dragon power/Elemental Powers and Dragon Ivory are the only known possible ways of escape. However, this method is draining, as people released this way come out drained.
History[]
Background[]
Millenia ago, the Dragon Masters, Egalt and Rontu, devised a strategy to prevent the Forbidden Five from destroying the realms. They aimed to defeat them using the Rising Dragon technique. However, they were concerned that no prison within the realms, including the Departed Realm, could contain the Forbidden Five.[1] To address this, Gandalaria developed an advanced spell that the Dragon Masters used to exile the Five to the Nether-Space.[2]
The Forest of Spirits[]
The Forbidden Five heard the drums coming from the Ritual of the Blood Moon and Nokt remarked that they are being called home.
Rising Ninja[]
Through the use of Theroxian magic, Jordana was able to use Bonzle to open a portal from the Shadow Dojo to the Nether-Space. After the original sacrifices escaped with help from the ninja, Lord Ras threw his hammer at Kai, who had just performed Rising Dragon, kicking him in the portal. After Kai was sent to the Nether-Space, the Forbidden Five member Nokt was able to escape. Eventually, Bonzle was able to fight off Jordana's magic, causing her to lose control and accidentally close the portal. While the portal was closing, Rox managed to escape by possessing Jordana.
Later in the Nether-Space, Kai reunited with Bonzle, who had her physical form sent there. While the two attempted to find a way to escape, Kai commented that ninja never quit.
No Way Out?[]
Kai and Bonzle discuss various ways to cross between realms that might be able to get them out; like the Realm Crystal and Traveler's Tea, even a dragon. They soon encounter a Rock monster and attacked them.
Enter the City of Temples[]
Kai and Bonzle continue to travel though the Nether-Space, where they both had to avoid running into the rest of the Forbidden Five.
Inside the Maze[]
Kai and Bonzle find the remaining Forbidden Five, seemingly speaking to no one. They believe the fourth one who was sleeping is the last of them and found out that they are communicating with someone on the outside. Once the other three members leave, Kai and Bonzle check on the fourth one and realize she is in a sleep-like trance. Bonzle notices Riyu's scales glowing on Kai's arm. She thinks the scales allow Kai to have a physical connection with Riyu which could allow them to talk to him. In the Games Plaza, Riyu hears Kai in his head.
The Sword Shatters[]
Kai and Bonzle continue to spy on the Forbidden Five and once they see them leaving, Kai tries to communicate with Riyu. Kai finds himself talking to Nya and warns her that the Five are also communicating with someone in the Merged Realms. Unknown to Kai and Bonzle, Rox and Nokt had captured Nya and Riyu.
The Final Game[]
Kai and Bonzle try to sneak around the remaining Forbidden Five. Kai accidentally kicks a rock but the two manage to stay out of sight.
Appearance[]
The Nether-Space exists beyond the Merged Realms, and adopts a very geometric appearance. There are several small staircases, cubes, and rectangular prisms scattered about. Everything in the space seems to be made out of stone, and parts of it have light layers of moss growing on it. There are also large pitfalls that adopt the shape of rectangular prisms.
Gravity is inconsistent in the Nether-Space, allowing inhabitants to traverse on different sides of a room, including walls and ceilings.
The Nether-Space also adopts red lightning during the Blood Moon.

Trivia[]
- The Nether-Space seems to have gravitational differences from Ninjago as the Forbidden Five were in all types of different gravity directions.
- The gravity of the Nether-Space is a reference to that of M.C. Escher's lithograph "Relativity."[3]
- According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, the Nether-Space maintains permanence in contrast to the Departed Realm due to instances of beings returning from the Departed Realm, while access to the Nether-Space is limited to the Ritual of the Blood Moon occurring every few millennia.[1]
- However, it was revealed in "The Final Game" that opening a portal to the Nether-Space is not solely dependent on the Ritual of the Blood Moon. Instead, a substantial amount of Dragon Ivory and Elemental Powers can also be used to access the Nether-Space. However, it is pointed out in the “Elements of Betrayal” that this method is corrupted, with people becoming strained and severely weakened as a result. Despite this, Kai and Bonzle didn't get drained as Kai heads into battle against Nokt immediately after being released.
- The Nether-Space was not affected by the Merge, as it is located outside the realms, much like the Grasslands.[1]
- According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, time passes normally in the Nether-Space, as he states that inhabitants "feel every second." However, he also states that effects of time, such as aging and hunger, are a separate issue.[4]
- He later stated that time doesn't pass in the Nether-Space, and clarified that time itself was trapped there.[5]
- Out of all the known locations outside of the Merged Realms, the Nether-Space is the only one where visitors retain their physical bodies.
