“This mural will remind and help us remember. It is our collective history captured in a single image.”

The Ninjago history mural[1] was a painting on the walls of the Monastery of Spinjitzu that portrayed some of the key moments in Ninjago's history that the ninja played a role in.

At some point between the final prophecy of Quanish the Elder and the Merge,[2] the paintings were erased.

History[]

After Hunted[]

After Garmadon's defeat, the ninja decided to return to the Mountains of Impossible Height, where they had built the new Monastery of Spinjitzu. On one of its walls, Wu gave the monks the task of painting a mural depicting the history of the ninja.

March of the Oni[]

Endings[]

After the Oni's invasion, each of the ninja placed one hand dipped in the paint on the wall near the mural in a circle, creating Ninjago's symbol of destiny.

Pre-Merge[]

Sometime after the Overlord's third defeat, the mural was removed from the wall.

Trivia[]

  • Many events of the previous seasons are shown, as well as the main villains and focus ninja of the seasons.
    • When Wu showed the painting of Skybound, both Dareth and Kai seemed confused while Jay and Nya recalled the events since they were the only ones that do so. It also showed Wu is aware of the events, despite them being undone.
  • The reason why there is no mural of "Day of the Departed" is that it is a short and small event that does not have an impact on the land of Ninjago.[3] However, Tommy Andreasen regrets not making a mural for it.[4]
  • A vastly simplified version of the mural appears as stickered elements on the walls of the Legacy Monastery remake.
  • There are multiple errors present in the murals themselves and some shown in the March of the Oni intro.
    • In the Rise of the Snakes mural, which represents the events of the "Day of the Great Devourer," the original four ninja are wearing their Training suits, despite them wearing their ZX suits at the time.
    • In the Legacy of the Green Ninja mural, Garmadon is missing his armor and additional arms.
Ep64 Cole & Kai real shot and mural comparison

Cole and Kai's shots from "The Way Back" (top) reused, albeit heavily shrunken down for the Possession mural (bottom)

    • For the Possession mural, if one were to look closely at Cole and Kai on the Preeminent, they are wearing their Destiny suits from the next season, Skybound, when they should be in their Deepstone suits. This is especially odd, given how Jay and Nya wear their Deepstone suits in the mural. The images of Cole and Kai were taken directly from the shot of "The Way Back;" however, Cole is missing his shoulder armor on his suit.
      • Zane is also strangely absent from the Possession mural.
    • In the Dark Island Trilogy mural, the ninja are wearing their Destiny suits from Skybound. However, they were never worn in the novels, they were wearing their Honor suits.
      • Nya is also absent from the Dark Island Trilogy mural for unknown reasons.
      • Also, in the Season 10 intro, the Dark Island Trilogy mural is shown before Skybound, despite the events of the latter taking place before the novel.
    • In the Sons of Garmadon mural, Lloyd's image is mirrored.
    • In the Season 10 intro, when it shows the Sons of Garmadon mural, Lloyd is wearing his Hunted suit, but wears his Resistance suit in the actual mural.
    • In the Hunted mural, Lloyd is wearing his Resistance robe and has green eyes. However, since this is meant to represent the battle between Lloyd, Wu and Garmadon in "Green Destiny," Lloyd should be wearing his Hunted suit and have black eyes. Garmadon also lacks any detailing at all, besides his red eyes.
      • On a side note, while Lloyd does wear his Resistance suit and gets his green eyes back in Hunted, it was during "Green Destiny" and after the battle with Garmadon.
  • Wyplash is the only Skulkin general not present in the mural. The other three are depicted in the pilot episodes mural. This is probably because Wyplash did not appear in the pilot episodes.
  • Despite the fact that bo staff looks like a bamboo staff in the show, on the mural it looks the same as in the sets.
  • Cyrus Borg's appearances in the mural use his March of the Oni hair despite picturing him from earlier seasons when his hair was different.
  • The events of Season 6 are pictured on the mural, which possibly implies that Wu knows about the events from the Alternate timeline. For more information, see here.
  • When releasing close-up images of the murals from Skybound onward, Tommy Andreasen provided additional information and trivia about the respective installments.[5][6][7][8][9]
  • Despite appearing in later seasons, no new murals dedicated to the events of Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, Prime Empire, Master of the Mountain, The Island, Seabound, and Crystalized appeared.
  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt once stated that he believed the murals were destroyed during the events of Crystalized.[10]
    • Eventually, he admitted that he was wrong after fans posted screenshots of the murals at the end of the mentioned season.[11]
