“It is an Oni. My father called them the Bringers of Doom. He feared that they would one day spread out from their realm and cover all the lands of creation in darkness.”

The Oni (also known as the Bringers of Doom) are a race of powerful demons with the power of Destruction, led by the Omega. They are the first evil to ever come into existence, as well as the creators of the three powerful Oni Masks. They once inhabited Oni land, a forbidden part of the Realm of Oni and Dragons, the first realm in existence. Oni were at war with the dragons until the First Spinjitzu Master was born. Hundreds of years prior to Garmadon's resurrection, the surviving Oni left their realm with the goal to conquer/destroy all realms, including Ninjago.

The Oni's invasion was halted by the combined efforts of the ninja and the sons of the First Spinjitzu Master, and the demons were vanquished by the Tornado of Creation. Their ultimate fate is left ambiguous.[2]

History[]

Prior to the series[]

Before the existence of any other realms, there was the Realm of Oni and Dragons. In this realm existed two races; the Oni and the dragons. The dragons had the power to create, while the Oni had the power to destroy, and so they waged a never-ending war against each other. One day, however, a child was born of both the worlds of Oni and dragons, having both the powers of Destruction and Creation. When the Oni and the dragons fought over which side the child should choose, the child left their world to start a new one, called "Ninjago".

Soon afterward, the Oni sent some of their forces after the child to his new realm of existence to bring him back to the realm or kill him. With the help of a kind Oni woman named Mystake, the child, eventually known as "the First Spinjitzu Master" beat back the pursuing forces. Before their defeat, the Oni left the three Oni Masks behind as a sign of their time in the realm, building a temple deep within Primeval's Eye, where they depicted their origins on the walls and sealed away the Oni Mask of Hatred so it could only be taken by a being with Oni blood.

Thousands of years later, the First Spinjitzu Master's son, Garmadon, would inherit his Oni blood from his father. Once awakened, the blood that flowed through his veins would turn him into a megalomaniacal monster, bent on conquering Ninjago. He would then go on to cause many of the conflicts in Ninjago's history. His evil actions would be manipulated by the Overlord, a manifestation of Darkness born from the shadows to balance out the First Spinjitzu Master's light, in his attempt to restart the "Final Battle" between good and evil, and rise to power overall.

Prior to March of the Oni[]

By the time of the ninth season, the majority of the Oni had mysteriously disappeared from their realm in order to begin their conquest of the realms, leaving Oni land abandoned and in disrepair, due to being untended to for centuries. The only full-blooded Oni that was known to be alive at the time was Mystake, who remained in Ninjago after helping to defend it, now disguised as an elderly tea lady.

After his banishment to the Cursed Realm and the subsequent drowning of its embodiment the Preeminent at the hands of Nya, Garmadon and the realm's other inhabitants passed on to the Departed Realm. While here, Garmadon saw an "everlasting night" which filled him with fear. Believing only the power of Destruction he inherited from his father could protect his father's realm from the coming threat of the Oni, Garmadon sought out Harumi upon his resurrection, plotting to conquer Ninjago and overcome his love for his son in order to stir up enough conflict to unlock his True Potential.[3][4]

March of the Oni[]

The Darkness Comes[]

Now experienced as conquerors, the Oni returned to the Realm of Oni and Dragons and attacked the Dragon Hunters and Dragons. Everyone touched by the darkness was petrified but Firstbourne and Faith managed to escape and were injured. The Oni then came into Ninjago City through the Realm Crystal. They quickly spread a dark cloud, petrifying everyone in Ninjago City. The Commissioner and his policemen were cornered in an alleyway only to be saved by the ninja. The ninja tried to use their powers on the cloud but their Elemental Powers had no effect. The ninja retreated, although they struggled to save Cole, who was grabbed by the Oni. Lloyd saved Cole and they returned to the rebuilt Destiny's Bounty. Cole then said the tentacle of the Oni was the coldest thing he ever touched. The entire city was engulfed in the black cloud with the ninja barely escaping.

Into the Breach[]

The Oni continued to spread across the city, petrifying many of the citizens. Garmadon and Lloyd went into the cloud to destroy the Realm Crystal, where they encountered two Oni guarding Borg Tower. After defeating them, they entered the building, but before they could destroy the crystal, the Omega manifested and attacked them.

The Fall[]

The Omega told Garmadon and Lloyd that he wanted to engulf Ninjago in darkness so that the power of Creation would be forever gone and Destruction will take its place. The Omega fought Lloyd and Garmadon and beat the pair back. Garmadon and Lloyd managed to destroy the Realm crystal although it did not stop the Oni Invasion. He then teleported many of the Oni to their location. While on the run, the two managed to find and take the Golden Armor, which had been kept in Borg Tower. The Omega led an army of Oni to stop Garmadon and Lloyd. However, they escaped with the help of P.I.X.A.L..

Endings[]

The Oni attacked the Monastery at the same time and the ninja, Wu, Faith, and Garmadon held a last stand to protect the citizens taking refuge in it. After the ninja decided to use the Tornado of Creation to destroy the Oni, Lloyd was injured in the process and saw a vision of the First Spinjitzu Master. A wave of Golden Power spread across the realms, revitalizing everyone who had been petrified and making the Oni disappear.

Abilities[]

  • Destruction - The Oni command the commands the powers of Destruction.
    • Dark Magic - According to Mystake in "The Weakest Link," the Oni power of Destruction is also Dark Magic, which they can enhance at will. However, it is unknown what the Oni can do with their Dark Magic, except the fact that they used it to create black clouds to petrify whoever they touch, manipulate illusions, shape-shift, and conjure up other Oni.
  • Shapeshifting - As mentioned by Iron Baron, the Oni can shapeshift into anyone as demonstrated by Mystake when she assumed Harumi's identity and mimic her voice. She also demonstrated to shapeshift into animals real or mythical. However, it won't protect them when they're in a dragon's presence because they can sense and smell Oni.
  • Longevity - The Oni are extremely long-lived, similar to dragons. Those of Oni descent are also capable of living a prolonged life, as demonstrated by the First Spinjitzu Master, who was half Oni and lived for thousands of years. Mystake, a full-blooded Oni, lived even longer. Wu and Garmadon, who are also half Oni,[5] have also lived for thousands of years.
  • Dimensional travel - Oni can access any and all of the Realms of Creation.

Trivia[]

The Trivia on Oni needs to be organized.
  • You can help the wiki by organizing the following information chronologically based on how the information applies to the series.
  • This template can be removed once the section has been organized.
  • The Oni are based on a kind of demon from Japanese folklore.
  • The Oni are the first evil to exist in the realms. However, because of Mystake, it's known that not all Oni are necessarily evil.
    • This makes the Oni the first dark beings in the Sixteen Realms, predating the Overlord, who rose from the shadows to balance out the First Spinjitzu Master's light.
      • Despite being the most powerful race to ever wield destruction, not even the Oni are immune to the effects of Dark Matter, as seen with Mystake in "Return of the Overlord".
      • When asked if the Overlord was an Oni, Tommy Andreasen said it would be left up to interpretation.[7]
        • Andreasen would later propose that he believes that The Overlord is the living embodiment of the First Spinjitzu Master's Oni side that the latter, literally, cast aside.[8] Should this theory ever be canonized in the show, then it would imply that the Oni and The Overlord are connected with each other.
  • The Oni once mysteriously disappeared from the Realm of Oni and Dragons.
    • This is most likely due to the fact that the surviving Oni left their realm with the goal to conquer/destroy all realms, including Ninjago, where they pursued the First Spinjitzu Master.
  • In "Two Lies, One Truth," it is revealed that there is a specific area of the Realm of Oni and Dragons that the Oni lived in, known to the Dragon Hunters as Oni land.
  • Iron Baron and his Dragon Hunters have never seen an Oni and mistook the ninja for Oni upon their arrival to the Realm of Oni and Dragons.
  • The Oni are shapeshifters.
    • This was revealed by Iron Baron in "Iron & Stone" and confirmed by Mystake in "Two Lies, One Truth," when she showed her powers to Lloyd, Nya, Skylor, and Dareth by transforming into a rat.
    • None of the full-blooded Oni shapeshift in March of the Oni.
  • Lord Garmadon's original corrupted form resembles Mystake's true form, lacking some notable features, such as horns, faun legs, and more exaggerated fangs.
  • Garmadon mentioned that "impending darkness" would soon consume all of Ninjago. At the end of "Green Destiny," Lloyd concluded that it was the missing Oni who would be the darkness. This was confirmed in "The Darkness Comes," with the Oni using darkness to conquer the realms.
  • The Oni also seem to be extremely long-lived, as the First Spinjitzu Master and his sons, who are half-Oni, were able to live for several thousand years and Mystake existed even longer.
  • Despite their power of shapeshifting being similar to the Element of Form, the Oni don't actually have the Elemental Power.[9]
  • The Oni are able to create dark clouds that feel cold to the touch and petrify those who are trapped within them. Cole said he sensed a presence inside the cloud.
  • Many of the Oni have a face resembling the shape of an Oni Mask.
  • They are the only villainous faction with only one named member.
  • Golden Power/Creation defeated the Oni in a very similar manner to when Lloyd used the same powers to destroy the Overlord in his dragon form.
  • Alongside the Vermillion, they are the only villain group with an unknown fate at the end of their arc. All that is known is that they disappeared after Wu, Garmadon, and the ninja combined to create the Tornado of Creation. There is no official confirmation as to whether they were destroyed or not, so it is left open to interpretation.
  • Of all the villain groups, Oni have the least amount of minifigures in the sets. Though others such as Red Visors use identical designs, they appear in more sets overall.
  • The Oni have some similarities with the Druun from Raya and the Last Dragon; both being sources of evil colored black and purple, appearing in a mist that is able to turn people into stone. They were also both stopped by a larger force of good, the First Spinjitzu Master for the Oni and Sisu the dragon for the Druun.
    • It should also be noted that, despite the similarities, Season 10: March of the Oni had aired two years prior to the release of Raya and the Last Dragon, foreboding the Druun.
  • The legs seen on Mystake and some of the evil Oni originate from the Faun from Minifigures Series 15.
  • It is worth noting that the Oni could have defeated the dragons by pure numbers, due to the fact that after their disappearance in the Realm of Oni and Dragons, the Dragon Hunters hunted down the rest of the dragons.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, it was "heavily implied" that Mystake was one of the three Oni warlords who created the Oni Masks and that she "disposed of the other two."[10][11]
  • The Oni are most likely able to see in the dark.[12]
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, Vengestone would "most likely not" block an Oni's power.[13]
    • This was later confirmed in Crystalized as the essence of Destruction is impervious to Vengestone.
  • Every Oni that has appeared in the show has been a black and purple color except for Lloyd. This could tie into the colors of his suit being gold and green.
  • The relationship between the Oni and the Source Dragons and whether or not their powers come from them is currently unknown.
    • When asked whether there is a possibility of a Source Oni, Doc Wyatt responded with, "Anything's possible."[14]
