“Resurrection; they will have the power to bring back... your father! But it won't be the man you recognize, there will be no light left in him!”

The Oni resurrection ritual[1] is a ceremony that allows those with Oni heritage to return from the Departed Realm using the Oni Masks. It was performed by Harumi to ressurect Garmadon.

History[]

Dread on Arrival[]

After recovering all three Oni masks, Harumi takes Lloyd prisoner and brings him to the Temple of Resurrection where she had prepared a ceremony to resurrect his father. Lloyd’s mother Misako is held in a cage that is linked to a trap alongside another cage that Lloyd was put in to prevent the other Ninja from interfering with the ritual. Later that night, the Sons of Garmadon have a brief fight with the Ninjago police before proceeding with the ritual. Harumi takes a hair from Lloyd and Misako, and stated they already took a hair from Wu, then orders the three masks to be put into position. Harumi begins to recite an ancient language that makes the Oni Masks levitate and connect to each other through beams of energy, which would eventually rip open a portal to the Departed Realm.

As Garmadon's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere, carried onward by the winds, Harumi called out to the Lord of Many Names, beckoning for him to follow her voice. With no time left to lose, the Ninja immediately sprung into action, attacking the Sons of Garmadon from behind. As they rushed towards Lloyd and Misako, Killow pulled the mechanism's switch, plunging Lloyd's cage into the waters below. In response to this, Cole rushed towards the mechanism and felled Killow with a powerful swing of his hammer before flipping it the other way to save his friend, unwittingly plunging Misako now into the dark waters. In the next few moments, the Ninja defeated the Sons of Garmadon's other two generals, but accidentally destroyed the mechanism's lever in the process. With some clever thinking by Nya, who hurled her spear to jam the mechanism, Cole proceeded to use his Earth Punch to force the its gears into lifting Lloyd out once more out of the water without dropping Misako back in.

With Lloyd freed from his cage, he and his allies combined their Spinjitzu tornados to push towards ritual table where Harumi stood chanting. Evil laughter now echoed across the temple grounds as the palace's eaves collapsed inwards, glowing with sinister purple energy. Despite facing strong resistance from the winds generated by the ritual, Lloyd managed to break through and strike down Harumi, interrupting the ceremony as Garmadon's voice cried out with a fading, "No!" With the ritual interrupted, the three Oni masks returned once more to their inert states as the portal closed, seemingly keeping Garmadon's spirit within the Realm of the Departed.

Now that the most chaotic elements had ceased, the Ninjago Police moved in to mop up and arrest the Sons of Garmadon, hauling them away with assistance from the Ninja. Unbeknownst to anyone however, in spite of the ritual's interruption, Harumi had succeeded in maintaining the portal long enough for Garmadon's mortal body to be mostly reformed. With no one present to witness, purple flames ignited across the ceremony grounds as Garmadon's hand clawed its way out from the ritual table. The Dark Lord had returned.

While at the Temple of Resurrection, one could recite a spell which would tear open a rift to the Departed Realm, and can resurrect an Oni, full-blooded or a hybrid.
