“When we find the weapons, we will find your sister. It is time! We must go to the first weapon!”
Wu to the ninja, "The Golden Weapon"

The search for the Golden Weapons is the event in which the ninja found the Golden Weapons. It was the team's first mission together.

History[]

Prelude to the Search[]

Shortly after the Battle Between Brothers, Wu gathered up the four Golden Weapons and hid them far and wide throughout Ninjago, placing a guardian to protect each one. After hiding the weapons, Wu drew up a map revealing the resting places of the weapons and gave it to an honest man to hide. Over the next decade, peace reigned and Wu managed to find for himself three students to train in the ways of the ninja.

Unbeknownst to Wu, however, his vanquished brother, Garmadon, had seized control over the Underworld and the Skulkin that resided there. Deep within the darkness, Garmadon schemed to find and retrieve the golden weapons to free him from his exile, dispatching Samukai to search for a renowned tinkerer to construct vehicles for the Skulkin in preparation for the search.

Attack on Ignacia[]

One day, Wu made his way to Four Weapons Blacksmith in the village of Ignacia. There, he found the shop's young owners, the siblings Kai and Nya, hard at work while discussing their blacksmithing. Wu made some dismissive remarks towards their shop's wares, leading to his expulsion by Kai. As he slowly departed the village however, the skies above Ignacia darkened as a platoon of sinister vehicles rounded the hill, ridden by an army of skeletons led by Samukai. In the battle that followed, Wu assisted Kai and Nya in defending the village from Samukai and his forces, learning to his horror that the Skulkin were following the orders of his long banished brother and were now seeking the golden weapons. After the Skulkin escaped with Nya and the Map to the Golden Weapons that had secretly been hidden behind the sign of Four Weapons, Wu related his story to Kai before taking him on as his fourth student, declaring that the search for the golden weapons has begun.

Retrieval of Three of the Golden Weapons[]

Following the attack on Ignacia, Kai would spend several days training with Wu, during which he met the rest of Wu's students: Jay, Cole, and Zane. Wu informed Kai that the four of them would work together as a team in their quest to retrieve the golden weapons before the Skulkin could. The next day, the ninja journeyed to the Caves of Despair, where they discovered that the Skulkin had already set up an expansive mining operation in search of the Scythe of Quakes. Unfortunately, in spite of their head start, the Skulkin had been reading the map upside down and as a result, were digging in the wrong spot. This mistake would cost them, allowing the ninja to retrieve the scythe, though they would only narrowly manage to escape the jaws of its draconic protector. Samukai would report their failure to Garmadon, though much to his confusion, his master seemed almost pleased that the ninja were able to obtain the scythe, insisting that everything was going to plan.

Following their successful retrieval of the scythe, the Ninja journeyed to the Ice Temple located within the Frozen Wasteland in search of the Shurikens of Ice. As with before, the Skulkin had already arrived at the Ice Temple prior to the Ninja's arrival, but were no where to be seen at the time of the ninja's arrival, with the only evidence of their former presence being several of their members being left behind, frozen in ice. The ninja were then able to retrieve the shurikens before once again, barely escaping from their protector.

Some time later, the Ninja and the Skulkin raced to climb to the top of the Floating Ruins in search of the Nunchucks of Lightning. The Ninja were able to retrieve the golden weapon first and escaped from their pursuers by using gliders, descending deep within the Forest of Tranquility where they would journey onward to the Fire Temple the following morning.

Garmadon's Ruse[]

Later that evening however, Kai would be awoken by the sound of his sister's voice, leading him deep within the Fire Temple where the final golden weapon, the Sword of Fire, rested. Upon arriving in the sword's chamber, "Nya" revealed herself to be an illusion created by Garmadon through his ability to manipulate shadows. Garmadon ordered Kai to retrieve the Sword of Fire for him, bringing out the real Nya, who had been chained and suspended above the temple's lava pools to serve as leverage, mockingly asking the red ninja how "else would he free his precious sister?" With no other choice, Kai removed the sword from its resting place and freed Nya before confronting Garmadon's shadowy form. In the fight that followed, Kai found himself unable to harm the dark lord in his shadow form, while the opposite effect was true for his opponent. At that moment, Wu arrived to Kai's rescue, fending off Garmadon's shadows before challenging his brother. At this moment, Garmadon revealed to his brother the depths of his master plan: by luring Kai to the Fire Temple and forcing Wu to rescue him, Wu had left the other three sleeping ninja defenseless, allowing them to be easily overrun by Samukai and the Skulkin, who had now claimed the other three Golden Weapons. Determined to prevent Garmadon from uniting the four weapons, Wu sliced apart a portion of stone in the lava pools, allowing him to journey to the Underworld. Infuriated, Garmadon ordered his forces to return home as well to confront Wu and retrieve the final Golden Weapon.

Duel in the Underworld[]

Awakening in the Underworld, Wu concealed the Sword of Fire before stealthily making his way into Garmadon's Dark Fortress to confront his brother. After defeating a group of Skulkin inside the fortress, Garmadon called forth Samukai, now wielding the other three Golden Weapons, to defeat Wu and unite them alongside the Sword of Fire.

Meanwhile, the Ninja, having failed to stop Samukai and his forces from returning to the Underworld with the Golden Weapons, managed to befriend the dragons who had originally guarded the weapons. Riding atop of their backs, the dragons assisted the ninja into crossing over to the Underworld, where they would fight their way into the fortress and discover their master locked in combat with Samukai. Although the others intended to intervene in the duel, Kai held them back, insisting that this was "Sensei's fight." Unfortunately, Wu lost the duel to Samukai, allowing the Skulkin general to claim the Sword of Fire. Now armed with all four Golden Weapons, Samukai turned towards his master and declared he would no longer serve him. To Samukai's confusion however, Garmadon only laughed. Confusion would quickly turn into fear as Samukai's arms began to flail uncontrollably, leading him to cry out in terror. Ceasing his laughter, Garmadon revealed that Samukai was always nothing more than a pawn in his game, always two steps behind of his master; Garmadon had intended for Samukai to give into the temptation of possessing all four Golden Weapons, and by doing so, Samukai had unwittingly united the Golden Weapons. This action would then open a vortex through space and time, one that would allow Garamdon to escape his imprisonment in the Underworld. Almost as if on cue, Samukai was disintegrated by the power of the Golden Weapons, leaving behind only a vortex where he once stood. The vortex would close once Garmadon passed through, leaving behind the Golden Weapons for the ninja to retrieve and claim.
