The second season of Ninjago: Dragons Rising is preceded by Season 1 and The Elemental Mechs, and will be succeeded by Season 3. Kai and Egalt are the mascot characters in the first part of the season while Lloyd and the Source Dragon of Motion are the mascots in the second part, Lord Ras serves as the main antagonist, and the Wolf Clan serves as the villainous faction of the season. On July 20, 2023, it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that it will be released in 2024.[1]

The first teaser and poster were released on January 31, 2024, and it was also announced that the season would be released on April 4, 2024. On March 23, the first three episodes were shown at the Paris Image Forum theater.[2] A full trailer was released on YouTube on March 7, 2024. Episodes 1 - 10 were released on April 3, 2024 on Netflix in Finland and were released on April 4, 2024 in the United States. Episodes 11 - 20 were released on July 25, 2024 on Peacock in the United States and were taken down the next day. The same episodes were then released officially on US Netflix on October 3, 2024.[3]

Sets[]

Kai and Egalt are the mascot characters in the first two waves, and the background is based on the Forest of Spirits and the training plateau of the Dragon Masters. However, in the third wave, Lloyd and the Source Dragon of Motion are the mascot characters, and the set background is the City of Temples. The Source Dragon focused on in this season is the Source Dragon of Motion. The collectible items for this season are the Mallet and Gong of Shattering.

  • Tied with the previous season, this is the longest season in the franchise in terms of runtime, having 20 episodes that are 22 minutes long. (440 minutes total)
  • This is the first season to have 3 set waves.
    • It is also the first season to have waves entirely based of one part of the season: the March wave being based on the first part of the season and the June wave on the second. The January wave is mostly based on the Mechs shorts.[46]
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt:
    • One of the episodes has a classic Doctor Who 1977 episode reference that is deep and obscure.[47]
    • Episode 7 was his favorite episode of the series to write.[48]
  • The season went into production in 2022.[49]
  • On March 12, 2024, writers Chris "Doc" Wyatt and Kevin Burke each tweeted out a sneak peek at the season in the form of two truths and a lie.
    • Wyatt's three statements were:
      • The Ninja will be sorted according to their Fang status.
      • When the Blood Moon rises, Skulkins gain special powers.
      • The Administration will have problems getting the equipment they want.[50]
        • The second statement is the lie: Egalt and Rontu sort the ninja by their Fang status and the ninja prevent the Administration's attempts to recover Zane, who they consider to be their equipment.
    • Burke's three statements were:
      • Scrolls written in ancient Theroxian reveal how to perform an evil ritual.
      • A Writer of Destiny has a direct connection to the Forbidden Five.

  • This is the third consecutive season to have its second part release on Netflix in the US during October, following Crystalized from the original show and Season 1 of Dragons Rising.
Shattered Dreams Shot Comparison

Comparison between the shot in the trailer and in the episode

  • The trailer for Season 2 had a shot of Cinder powering up to use Shatterspin but the Shatterspin circle was missing, unlike in the episode.
  • This is the first time that someone has been credited as creating original music alongside Jay Vincent and Michael Kramer, that person being Adam Dib. He's worked on the show since 2021 as creating additional music.
  • This is the second season to feature a tournament featuring Elemental Masters competing against each other, with the first being Season 4: Tournament of Elements.
  • This season shares similarities to Season 11: Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu.
    • At the beginning and throughout the seasons, one of the ninja (Lloyd and Zane) experience troubling visions that reveal future events within the seasons.
    • A new, darker form of Spinjitzu created by ancient beings is practiced in the seasons (Shatterspin, created by the Forbidden Five; Forbidden Spinjitzu, created by the First Spinjitzu Master).
    • One of the ninja ends up being rendered helpless in combat throughout most or all of the first halves following a battle with a new enemy (Wyldfyre having her leg injured by Cinder; Kai having his Fire powers stolen from Aspheera).
    • Wu is revealed to be the indirect cause of the events build up to in the seasons (Wu being the cause of the Merge; Wu causing Aspheera to desire revenge upon him).
    • Towards the end of the first halves, one of the ninja is sent to a distant location thanks to the main antagonists (Ras sending Kai to the Nether-Space and Aspheera sending Zane to the Never-Realm, although the latter happened in the penultimate episode of its first half). Both ninjas are able to return to Ninjago by the season finales ("Elements of Betrayal" and "Awakenings").
    • Also in the second halves, one of the ninja who is amnesiac, becomes a major antagonist as a result of manipulation from the main antagonist (Jay being manipulated by Ras; Zane being manipulated by Vex). Both ninjas also end up fighting one of their former teammates in one episode (Nya against Jay in "Inside the Maze" and Lloyd against Zane in "Awakenings").
  • This is the first Ninjago season where the intro in Part 1 and Part 2, while they share the same style of intro, the characters and environments were changed to reflect the current events of each Part.

    • Ras is focused on in Episodes 1, 2, 9, 10, 15, 16, 19, and 20.
      • In Episode 1, Ras uses the Dragon power from the Source Dragon to unlock the Shadow Dojo, and announces his plan to Jordana to unleash the Forbidden Five.
      • In Episode 2, Ras takes over the Cloud Kingdom, and fights back against the ninja, demonstrating the power of the Wolf warriors and of Shatterspin.
      • In Episode 9, Ras' backstory was revealed when his master finds him after he gets stuck in a ravine.
      • In Episode 10, Ras performs the ritual, succeeding in freeing only one of the Forbidden Five, and declares to his master that they will conquer the Merged Realms by getting to the Source Dragons upon winning the Tournament of the Sources.
      • In Episode 15 and Episode 16, his conversation with Arin about him wanting to reverse the Merge changes the young ninja's points of view about the ninja and sets him apart from them.
      • In Episode 19, Ras is betrayed by Nokt and in Episode 20, he is taken by the Forbidden Five only to be save by Arin.
  • Cinder and Jordana both serve as the secondary antagonists of this season.

      • In Episode 1, Cinder is introduced stealing the Mallet of Shattering.

      • In Episode 10, Cinder again uses Shatterspin to fight the ninja, before being bested by Kai using Rising Dragon, as well as by Lloyd.
    • Jordana is focused on in Episodes 1, 8, 10, 13, 18, and 20.
      • In Episode 1, Jordana ventures with Ras through the Forest of Spirits to the Shadow Dojo, and supplies the Dragon power he needs to open it.
      • In Episode 8, Jordana knocks the Destiny's Bounty out of the sky, and kidnaps Bonzle from Cole, Zane, and Gandalaria
      • In Episode 10, she opens the gateway to Nether-Space, but is eventually unable to prevent Bonzle from closing it, and is possessed by Rox.
  • Nokt, Rox, and Bleckt served as important antagonists in Part 2.
    • Nokt is focused on in Episodes 10, 16, 19, and 20.
      • In Episode 10, Nokt is released from the Nether-Space and fights the ninja. Later Ras places a device on the back of his head to control him.
      • In Episode 19, Nokt wins a final match of the Tournament of the Sources against Sora and gains all the Elemental Powers of the Tournament. He also betrays Lord Ras, and it is revealed it was him and Rox who killed the Arc Dragons for their Crowns of Horns.
    • Rox is focused on in Episodes 10, 19, and 20.
      • In Episode 10, she escapes the Nether-Space by extracting her soul from her body, taking control of Jordana without anyone aside from Nokt noticing.
      • In Episode 19, it is revealed she and Nokt were the ones who killed the Arc Dragons for their Crowns of Horns. She also corrupts and empowers the Wolf Mask Warriors to fight the Elemental Masters and appears in a flashback where she is shown creating the Wolf Masks.
      • In Episode 20, she fights the ninja until gaining her physical body again.
    • Bleckt is focused on in Episodes 12, 18, and 19.
      • In Episode 12, he stops the ninja from attending the tournament by withholding their invitation and insisting that they should leave. Despite his efforts, he was forced to accept their presence because of Roby's position as Games Master.
      • In Episodes 14, 16, and 19, Bleckt secretly rigged some of the matches involving the ninja, giving their opponents, including the Wolf Clan, an advantage.
      • In Episode 18, Arin and Wyldfyre uncovered that Bleckt harbors a deep-seated resentment towards Roby, which has escalated to the extreme desire to take his life. They also learned that Bleckt had a clandestine meeting with Ras just one day before the start of the tournament.
      • In Episode 19, it was revealed that he was the secret assassin who tried to kill both the ninja and Zur using the attacker bots. It also revealed that Bleckt teamed up with Ras by rigging the games, allowing Nokt to win. In return for this arrangement, Ras was supposed to take out Roby, while Bleckt would become the new Games Master.
  • Lord Ras' master serves as the overarching antagonist of this season.
    • They are focused on in Episodes 5, 9, and 10.
      • In Episode 5, the master summons Lord Ras to talk to him about their plan.
      • In Episode 9, it is revealed that Ras was saved by his master as a child, and it was the master who taught him about strength being the most important thing.
      • In Episode 10, the master summons Ras once again and they also help him and the Wolf Clan to escape after failing at the Ritual of the Blood Moon.
  • Other important antagonists include the rest of the Forbidden Five (Zarkt, Drix, and Kur), Dorama (Episode 6), the Administration Agents (Episode 7, Episode 8, and Episode 11), Jay (Episode 7, Episode 8, and Episode 14), and the Freebooters (Episode 11).
