Chen brought us here so that only one would remain. Well, we are one!”

The fourth season of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, subtitled The Tournament of Elements, was preceded by Season 3 and succeeded by Season 5. The focus character was undetermined, but Kai was the mascot character. Chen served as the main antagonist and the Anacondrai Warriors were the villainous faction of the season.

Official Description

When Zane sacrificed himself to stop the Golden Master, the power of the Golden Weapons unlocked new abilities within him, revealing a new layer of titanium. The immense energy dispatch destroyed parts of him and caused Zane to vanish into the Digiverse. Only P.I.X.A.L. was aware of Zane’s digital presence – or so she thought...

Story

After the loss of Zane, the team is split apart, and Lloyd seeks to rebuild it. But everything changes when they find out that Zane is alive, and that crime lord, Master Chen, invites the Ninja and the other Elemental Masters to a Tournament, so that he can steal their powers in order to complete a spell that will turn him and his worshippers into Anacondrai.

Trivia

  • This season starts the trend of each season having 10 episodes which lasted until Season 10.
  • This season was inspired by the 1973 film Enter the Dragon.[1]
  • When Zane rejoins the cast, the intro is not updated.
  • This is the first season that the Postman doesn't appear in.
  • This season, along with Season 5, aired in their entirety in the same year. (Season 4 in the spring of 2015, and Season 5 in the summer of 2015). This marks the first time in the show that 2 seasons aired in the same year. [2]
  • Nya does Spinjitzu at the end of the intro, just like the others. However, it is not canon, as she is confirmed to have later learned it between Skybound and Day of the Departed.[3]
  • The Hageman Brothers stated that they liked the mysterious island and tournament aspect of the season but they didn't like the ending as much.[4]
  • In some airings, the tune of the audio had a low pitch. [citation needed]
  • This was the first season to have issues of the Ninjago Magazine made for it.

Focus Character

  • The focus Ninja is left undetermined throughout the season, with no official confirmation given as to who the focus is. As such, multiple characters can be seen as a focus:
  • Kai had the largest role in this season with many aspects of him being explored, like the relationship between him and Skylor, his jealousy in the prophecy of the Green Ninja, and the introduction of his parents.
    • Kai was focused on in Episodes 36, 37, 39, 40, 41 and 42.
      • In Episode 36, Kai fought Karlof for the final spot in the next round of the tournament and won. He also discovered hints to Skylor's powers.
      • In Episode 37, Kai faced Ash and was ultimately victorious, advancing in the tournament.
      • Kai and Skylor's relationship was focused on in the second half of Episode 39.
      • In Episode 40, Kai found out Skylor is Chen's daughter, which turned into a conflict between the two.
      • Kai was the main focus in Episode 41 with many moments. Kai was confronted by Chen who knew secrets of his parents, temporarily betrayed Nya and Wu while working for Chen, and was under the powers of the Staff of Elements, ultimately breaking it and giving the powers back to the Elemental Masters.
      • In Episode 42, while captured by Chen, he and Skylor struggled as Chen began the transformation spell, which he completed. Later, Kai was able to summon an Elemental Dragon.
      • Kai and Skylor's relationship temporarily ended in Episode 44, where Skylor left for a while.
  • Skylor had a major role in this season behind Kai, especially in episodes 39, 40 and 41. The relationship between them was a major plotline in this season.
  • Master Garmadon has a great role, with many individual moments in the season, especially in episodes 40 and 44.
    • In episode 40, the backstory of Garmadon is mentioned.
    • In episode 44, the relationship of him with Misako, Wu, and Lloyd was the focus.
  • Lloyd and Zane also had crucial roles in this season.
    • Lloyd was focused on in Episode 38.
      • In episode 38, Lloyd's spot in the tournament against Camille was the main focus of the episode.
      • His relationship with Garmadon was an additional focus in episode 44.
    • Zane being lost in the previous season is the primary cause of the things occurring in this season. His fate is vital to it.
      • Zane was focused on in Episode 42 where he unlocks his ability to summon a dragon, with the help of P.I.X.A.L.
      • The fate of P.I.X.A.L. was also covered in episode 37.
      • P.I.X.A.L. had appearances in episodes 37-40 and 42-43.
  • Cole had a great role in this season, more than Jay and Nya.
    • He was focused on in the second half of Episode 37, after Kai, where he fought Jay in the tournament, which he ultimately let Jay have the victory.
    • Cole had a story of prison sequence in episodes 38-41 as he helped the Elemental Masters who had lost in the tournament plan to escape.
  • The relationship between Jay and Cole deteriorates in the beginning of the season, and they had a battle in Episode 37. Jay also moved forward in the tournament due to Cole's choice in episode 37.
  • Nya had a good role in Episode 39 where she became a spy in the tournament, however, her role was relatively minor.
  • Wu had a minor role in the season.
  • Misako had appearances in episodes 37, 40, 42, and 44.
    • She had a greater role in the seasonal finale (episode 44), with Master Garmadon.

Antagonists

  • Chen served as the main antagonist. Other important antagonists include Clouse, Skylor (episodes 35-41), Eyezor, Zugu, Kapau, Chope, and the Anacondrai Serpent.
  • The Anacondrai Warriors were the villainous faction of the season.
