Season 8 of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, subtitled Sons of Garmadon, was preceded by Season 7 and succeeded by Season 9. Lloyd was the focus ninja and the intro character, Harumi served as the main antagonist, and the Sons of Garmadon were the villainous faction of the season. Lord Garmadon was the mascot character of the sets.

Plot

A year after the loss of Master Wu, the ninja, led by the newly dubbed Master Lloyd, must protect the Royal Family and prevent a group known as the Sons of Garmadon from successfully reviving Lord Garmadon at the Temple of Resurrection using the Oni Masks.

Official Description

In the action-packed season 8 of the NINJAGO® TV show, the Sons of Garmadon, a mysterious biker gang, are on a chase after the three Oni Masks. The forceful villains plan to use the power of the masks to resurrect the evil Lord Garmadon. But can the great ninja team of Lloyd, Kai, Nya, Jay, Zane, and Cole stop them in time?

Cast

Designs

All the ninjas' designs have been changed so the transition for new fans that came from The LEGO Ninjago Movie would be easier. Now all the ninja look similar to their movie counterparts, though the eighth season remains canonical to the previous seasons of the show. In the first episode of the season, Cole and Jay have a short argument where Cole implies that Wu’s trip through time may have caused them to "look totally different and not even know it." While the Hageman Brothers say that this is the explanation for the design changes,[1] Tommy Andreasen says there is no real canonical reason and it is simply a fourth-wall-breaking meta-joke.[2]

  • Kai has a shorter version of his movie hairpiece and his movie self's thinner eyebrows. Tommy Andreasen said specifically that he didn't like the size of Kai's movie counterpart's hair, so they shortened it.[3] It is also now a shade of reddish-brown instead of dark brown. Tommy Andreasen also responded to a question about Kai's hair change with "All it takes to change a head of hair is a brisk breeze",[4] though this does not completely explain it as the texture of his hair also changed.
  • Jay has freckles and lost the notch on his eyebrow. The Hageman Brothers said that he always had freckles, but you never knew they were there.[5] He has his movie self's hairpiece, but his freckles are lighter and less apparent.
  • Cole's scar has now faded and is no longer visible, but it can be seen whenever he uses his RX powers. He has longer hair, and his eyes now have a more relaxed look to them, as his movie counterpart does. He has his movie self's eyebrows. His RX powers are now yellow/orange.
  • Zane has a new holographic projector that allows him to "transform" into anyone and change from titanium form to human form, without having actual flesh. He now has his hairpiece from the movie and the same blue eyes in human form. Of the ninja, he looks the most like his pre-Season 8 self, with the same eyebrows and mouth, and his Titanium form having the same face, excepting the new scratch on the upper left side. The blue "visor" that used to appear when his hood was up no longer appears.
  • Lloyd looks nearly identical to his movie counterpart, with long hair and green eyes that are more subtle that glow when he uses Spinjitzu. However, while in the movie Lloyd has a mostly black suit with green accents, the opposite is true for the show. His eyes are also slightly closer together.
  • Nya also looks nearly identical to her movie counterpart, having her movie hair, mouth, and mole on her cheek. According to Tommy Andreasen, Jay refers to it as a "mark of eternal beauty."[6]
  • Garmadon's appearance is the same as his appearance in The LEGO Ninjago Movie, as seen with his minifigure in 70643 Temple of Resurrection. The difference is that part of Garmadon's ribcage is cracked open, partially exposed with a purple liquid oozing from his torso.
  • Kai, Cole, Zane, and Lloyd have their weapons from The LEGO Ninjago Movie.

Trivia

  • This is the first season to not feature Skylor in any capacity since her debut after Rebooted. Although she does make a "cameo" in a photograph. 
  • There were originally plans for Echo Zane to be revealed as the true identity of Mr. E,[7] as Harumi and her team would've found him at the Lighthouse Prison and upgraded him. The concept was scrapped and isn't canon, as the Hageman brothers felt there wasn't time for it.
  • Hunted and March of the Oni were developed as companions to Sons of Garmadon. All of them together form a 24 episode arc.[8][9]
  • Despite Lloyd having a new voice actor, and the ninja all gaining new suits based on their movie counterparts, all the other ninja retain their previous voice actors.
  • Dan and Kevin Hageman returned to write this season. Previously, they handed over the writing duties to David Shayne for "Day of the Departed" and The Hands of Time, as the brothers were occupied with writing their Netflix original series, TrollHunters and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
  • Lloyd has a new voice actor, this being Sam Vincent, making this the first season not to feature Jillian Michaels in the role, and the first time one of the ninja is given a different voice actor in the series.
  • In May 2017, Tommy Andreasen hosted a contest where Ninjago fans submitted their artwork that would be displayed by a child around the age of 9-10 that was a huge fan of Ninjago.[10] The character was revealed to be the young Harumi before she lost her birth parents.
  • Various things were revealed in this season, such as the First Spinjitzu Master's origins, the identity of the new Samurai X, the fate of P.I.X.A.L., and how Zane inherited his Ice Element Powers.
  • For April Fools day, Tommy Andreasen posted a status on Twitter with three events from Sons of Garmadon, two of which are real and one of which is fake. The three events stated that Cole would do a lot of singing, that there would be old recurring enemies, and that a new ninja would join the team. The two confirmed events are that there would be old recurring enemies, as Garmadon was resurrected in this season, and that Cole would sing, as he is seen singing in the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and ninth episodes and in a teaser trailer. He also performs "The Weekend Whip" with most of the team in the ninth episode.
  • Tommy Andreasen addressed Season 8 as "Next Level Ninjago," implying the many new major changes in the series' tone.
  • The title of the season and a clip were revealed at San Diego Comic-Con.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, the first episode was made to be ready for release by January 1, 2018.[11]
  • A 90-second trailer was released on January 5, 2018.
  • The art direction of Sons of Garmadon was based on the 1988 Japanese film, Akira.[12]
  • Three teasers were released on January 16, 2018: Power of the Oni Masks, about the Oni Masks, Mysterious Biker Gang, about the Sons of Garmadon, and A Royal Encounter, about the relationship between Lloyd and Harumi.
  • Ninjago City now looks more like the city in The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
  • This is the first season where "The Weekend Whip" is not the theme of the intro, neither are the characters' names shown as they appear on screen. However, the "Jump up, kick back, whip around and. . . ." portion of the Weekend Whip's melody can be briefly heard in the very beginning. The ninja sing it in "True Potential."
    • It is also the first season that has its name written in the episode title cards.
  • This is also the first season not to have Ian James Corlett as part of the voice cast.
  • This is the second wave of sets to have no Dragons in the sets, the first being Day of the Departed. This may be due to the abundance and heavy focus of Dragons in Hunted.
  • This is the second season to air entirely in Australia/New Zealand before the United States, with the first being Rebooted.
  • Despite the six ninja and Garmadon receiving new designs from The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Misako remains the same design from the previous seasons, although her streak of white hair appears more prominent, after being absent since "The Attack".
  • Cyrus Borg, Ed, Edna, Skylor, Ray, Maya, and Ronin made cameo appearances in pictures in the backgrounds of certain episodes aboard the Destiny's Bounty.
  • All of Sons of Garmadon was released on the Cartoon Network US app, website, and On Demand on March 30, 2018. The first season to be put online before airing on television was The Tournament of Elements.
  • Sons of Garmadon is the first season to have multiple characters announce the title cards at the beginning of each episode (Lloyd announced episodes 75-83, and Garmadon announced the finale).
    • Because of this, this is also the first season to not have Master Wu announce the episode title at the beginning.
  • This is the fourth season where the Great Devourer triggered a season's main events. In Rise of the Snakes, the Serpentine sought to awaken the Devourer, in Legacy of the Green Ninja the Stone Army was awakened due to the Devourer's toxic venom seeping underground, in The Hands of Time, the Devourer's Vermillion eggs were used by Krux and Acronix to maneuver the Iron Doom. In this season, Harumi seeks to revive Lord Garmadon, as she looks up to him as the one who killed her parents' murderer—the Great Devourer. 
  • This was the fourth season where the final battle took place in Ninjago City, following seasons one, two and three. 
    • The final battle of Skybound took place in New Djinjago, which hovered over Ninjago City - although the battle didn't take place in the city itself. 
  • This is the second season to have no Serpentine since their debut in Rise of the Snakes, the first being Possession.
  • Season 8 marks the only season to have the ninja defeated, and separated in the end.
  • Master Wu in his elderly form is seen in the official trailer for the season. He also appears during Cole's flashback in "The Jade Princess" and Zane's in "Snake Jaguar."
  • This is the first and only season that Wu did not physically appear in his normal form, as he was a baby. He would finally return to normal at the end of Hunted.
  • The season has 3 different intros, albeit with no visual differences, the music changes. In "Dead Man's Squall," the music from Zane’s flashbacks before his sacrifice in "The Titanium Ninja" was used. After that, a new intro in is similar to the first, but slightly slower, was used in "Dread on Arrival".
  • Sons of Garmadon marks the only season of Ninjago to end with the six ninja being separated within different realms. It also marks the only season of Ninjago to end with a ninja losing his Elemental Power.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen in a live-chat hosted by Joshua Deck, production issues during the seventh season's development caused the vendor to be dismissed, but resulted in this season having a "leap in quality".[13]

Focus Characters

  • Lloyd is the focus ninja for this season because of the relationships that he has with Garmadon and Harumi.
    • He was focused on in Episodes 75, 76, 81 and 83.
      • In Episode 75, he discovers the new villains known as the Sons of Garmadon and reunites with the ninja after a year had passed.
      • In Episode 76, he began to grow a relationship with Harumi which became the main storyline.
      • In Episode 81, he fights Harumi for the Mask of Hatred after she revealed herself as the Quiet One, which resulted in his capture.
      • After Garmadon's resurrection, Lloyd fights him in Episode 83, where he ultimately loses the battle and his powers.
  • Cole and Zane played vital roles in this season, respectively.
    • Zane was focused on in Episodes 78 and 79.
      • In Episode 78, he went undercover as Snake Jaguar and participated in a street race with the Sons of Garmadon.
      • In Episode 79, Zane fights Mr. E and eventually loses. Afterwards, he discovers that P.I.X.A.L is Samurai X.
    • Cole was focused on in Episodes 77 and 78.
      • In Episode 77, Cole shows that he has a fear of singing which he overcame.
      • In Episode 78, He happen to stumbled upon Master Wu but in his baby form and became his caretaker.
      • Cole had sang in episodes 77, 78, 79, 81, and 83.
  • This season was unique as it ended on a cliffhanger.
  • Kai, Nya and Jay's roles this season were minor compared to the other ninja. However, Kai and Nya had bigger roles than Jay.
    • Kai had a heavier role in the first half of episode 82.
    • Nya had a heavier roles in numerous battles in the season (like the season finale).
    • Jay had a lot of dialogues, similar to previous seasons, because of his personality. However, his role was minor.
  • Wu returned, in the form of a baby, and became a sort of "McGuffin" for the Sons of Garmadon, and appeared in episodes 76 and 78-84.
    • The fate of Master Wu was revealed in episode 80.
  • P.I.X.A.L. had a larger role in this season due to her identity as Samurai X being revealed in episode 79. She had appearances in episodes 75-80 and 82-84.
  • Misako had some capacity in the show, with some appearances in episodes 82-84.
  • Skylor and Ronin made cameo appearances on photos.
    • As such, this is the first season since their introductions where they don't physically appear.
  • Season 8 is the first season to have two characters announce the title cards at the beginning of the episode (Lloyd for episodes 75-83, and Garmadon in the finale.)
