Shapeshifting is the ability to change one's form or appearance. While it is granted by the element of Form, some creatures such as the Oni or Formlings possess this power innately.

Types of shapeshifting

Elemental Power of Form

Form

This ability always applies to the individual only, although the Elemental Master of Amber can copy this ability. The power lies in the fact that the user can take any form, and it is not clear whether it can be, among other humanoid beings, an animal or a thing. The user can also copy the clothes and the voice of his template. During shapeshifting itself, the user turns into a purple energy wave in a few seconds, which passes from one part of the body to another.

Djinn shapeshifting

This ability is very similar to Elemental Power of Form and can change the user's appearance to someone else when shrouded in orange smoke, just like when fulfilling a wish. However, it turns out that the Djinn can also create a fictional creature to which he will change, which Nadakhan showed after turning into a pirate with only two arms, and they can also turn into artificial intelligence on a computer.

Oni shapeshifting

Each Oni can change their form to any being, and even animals of completely different sizes are confirmed. The Oni can also change their clothes into original clothes during the transformation or let them disappear completely, but they do not always have to do so and they can keep their original clothes. After the transformation, the Oni can keep their original voice, but they can also change it to the original voice. The transformation process itself can be done in two ways. The first is that the Oni wave their hands in front of their face and thus turn it into someone else's face, but the body retains their own. The second way is to cover themselves in a small cloud of darkness and change their form completely. However, it won't protect them when they're in a dragon's presence because they can sense and smell Oni.

Beings who are part-Oni have their own way of shapeshifting. Because of their Oni blood and power of Destruction, users such as Garmadon can unlock their Oni Form by channeling their anger, letting their strength and powers enhanced. The color of the user's face corresponds with their garments and changes to look similar to some of the Oni. However, if the user is weakened, they would revert back to normal.

As shown with Lloyd, sudden shock can revert the user back to normal.

Formling shapeshifting

Formlings

Unlike all the others mentioned, the Formlings can only change their form to one specific animal, which chooses them during a process called The Choosing, which takes place sometimes during the childhood of each Formling. Although it is said that only Formlings that are pure of heart will find their animal form, this is not true and at least one Formling is known who has not found his animal form. Once the Formling is turned into an animal, they cannot speak directly, but when they look at something in which their reflection is visible, they can. The process itself takes place in such a way that, if necessary, Formling begins to glow pink or blue with a white interior until it changes their appearance completely. However, no matter how injured a user is, they do not seem to be able to fully control their ability and can change into their human form during sleep.

Although not directly shapeshifting, the Nindroids or some advanced vehicles can change their appearance with the help of holographic projection, although their actual body remains unchanged. For this reason, it is impossible to change into anyone smaller or larger. The process itself takes place in such a way that blue holographic strips appear on the user's body and transform him.

Like beings who are part-Oni having the ability to transform into one through anger, users of the elements of Creation can turn into a humanoid Golden Dragon. For the transformation to work, the users would have to work in an act of unity and a sequence of movements.

Trivia

• Elemental Power of Form is almost the same as the shapeshifting of Oni, but Oni do not have elemental power. According to Tommy Andreasen, the two are most likely unrelated.
• The actual process of shapeshifting differs for each type, for example, the Elemental Master of Form changes with purple light relatively slowly, so the true shape of the master can be seen at once, as well as the person to whom it has been transformed, or Formlings change at once in pink glow, so the transformation itself is not completely visible, or Oni, whose transformation is effected by the movements of the hands, if they are transformed into a human, although when they are transformed into an animal, the transformation is similar to that of Formlings.
