- This article is about the fighting technique. For the comic series, see Shatterspin (comic series).
Shatterspin is an advanced and forbidden form of Spinjitzu infused with Thunderfang's Chaos and developed by the Forbidden Five.[1] This technique is accessible to any user who studies the teachings of the Forbidden Five, giving them a blue version of the ability upon use.[2] However, only Elemental Masters who wear Wolf Masks activated by the Gong and Mallet of Shattering can perform the true and more powerful version of Shatterspin, which has its signature red color. When activated, the Wolf Mask glows red and morphs into armor, allowing the user to perform a dark red and black spin. However, an Elemental Master could perform Shatterspin without a Wolf Mask like the Five, once they have mastered a certain degree of its teachings.[3] The Five can create smaller red waves by stomping or punching the ground as an alternate way of activating Shatterspin.[4] Shatterspin is focused around the concept of strength and can be best countered by the Rising Dragon technique.
History[]
Background[]
Shatterspin emerged as a powerful skill derived from Spinjitzu, developed by the Forbidden Five, harnessing the dark energy sourced from Thunderfang.[5] The technique was subsequently imparted to the Wolf Clan by the Forbidden Five. Notably, Argus achieved mastery in Shatterspin, having meticulously refined its techniques, even though he wasn't an Elemental Master.[6] While other Elemental Masters could learn Shatterspin, they had to wear a Wolf Mask and hit the Gong of Shattering with the Mallet of Shattering in order to be empowered by the dark energy and access its full power. However, they would no longer need a Mask to use Shatterspin once they become proficient with its teachings, much like the Forbidden Five. Unfortunately, the use of Shatterspin and other abilities led to the corruption of the Wolf Clan, and the Forbidden Five used Shatterspin to destroy much of the Wyldness.[3] Despite the group's efforts, Egalt and Rontu managed to defeat them and their Shatterspin using the Rising Dragon technique. Following the banishment of the Five, Egalt and Rontu erased all records of their existence, including the teachings of Shatterspin.[7]
Shatterspin[]
The Lycan King[]
When Garmadon woke up, he used Shatterspin to punch the rubble away so he and the Children of the Wolf could escape.
Masters and Students[]
Garmadon practiced Shatterspin, believing he has achieved mastery over it. Watching him practice, Zuri tried to copy his movements but fell out of the tree while doing so. After some coaxing from Mama Mawa, Garmadon agreed to train the Children of the Wolf in the art, starting by setting them through a series of arduous exercises.
After his students had made "acceptable" progress in their training, Garmadon demonstrated for them the basic attack of Shatterspin and instructed each to try one at a time. After Balun, Iriel, and Warby all failed, Zuri managed to achieve the art, blowing a hole through the boulder she and the others were training on. Once they all left, Asa approached the boulder and unbeknownst to anyone, obliterated the boulder with a massive burst of Shatterspin.
Destinies[]
Continuing their training, the Children of the Wolf attempted to steal a scarf from Garmadon as he ran through a swamp. Attacking from all sides, the four children each destroyed a surrounding tree with Shatterspin to distract Garmadon before pouncing on him.
Homecoming[]
After encountering the Lycan King within the Hall of Wolves in Lupindor, the Children of the Wolf attacked him with Shatterspin, aiming to destroy the Runes of Binding. Unfortunately, their timing was off and they failed to destroy the runes. Nevertheless, Asa single handedly destroyed all four runes shortly thereafter with a powerful burst of Shatterspin.
Later, when Asa and Garmadon fled to the Shadow Dojo in search of more power to defeat Zaiden Kane and the Lycan King, Garmadon hesitated before striking the Gong of Shattering, having witnessed a vision of his future evil self. Asa comforted Garmadon and donned a Wolf Mask himself, before striking the gong and granting himself the true power of Shatterspin. As Kane and the Lycan King arrived at the dojo, Asa attacked them with Shatterspin, striking the Lycan King as he snatched the Spectral Crown from Kane and destroyed it, killing himself, Kane, and the Lycan King in the process.
Dragons Rising, Season 2[]
Prior to Shattered Dreams[]
After unlocking the Shadow Dojo, Ras instructed Cinder on how to master the Shatterspin technique.
Shattered Dreams[]
After Cinder was defeated by the ninja, Ras introduced the concept of Shatterspin to the ninja. As Cinder puts on a Wolf Mask, Ras strikes the Gong of Shattering with the Mallet of Shattering, causing the mask to transform into armor. Cinder then levitates in the air, encircled by a storm of Shatterspin, and lands with his eyes glowing red. Engaging in combat, he employs Shatterspin against the ninja until they eventually retreat.
Beyond the Phantasm Cave[]
Cinder used Shatterspin during a Shatterspin training with Ras, where he used it to unleash a series of attacks on several clay pots. Cinder also states that he can feel the Gong resonate inside him, shattering the goodness in his soul.
The Spell at the Waterfall[]
During another Shatterspin training, Cinder starts by smashing several pots, with Ras yelling at him to use more force. He tells him that strength is all that matters in Shatterspin.
Rising Ninja[]
When Cinder gets his hands on a Wolf Mask, he uses Shatterspin to take out the Ninja but the technique was eventually counteracted by Kai, who used Rising Dragon. After Kai was knocked into the portal, Nokt was released and he used Shatterspin.
Prior to The Shape of Motion[]
Possessing Jordana's body, Rox worked alongside Nokt to orchestrate the escape of the remaining members of the Forbidden Five, all the while keeping their intentions hidden from Ras. Their plan involved acquiring Dragon Ivory by launching an assault on three Arc Dragons, resulting in the demise of the creatures and the acquisition of their Crowns of Horns.
As part of their plan, the siblings attacked the Matriarch of the Mountain Dragons at some point, using Shatterspin to knock her Crown of Horns off her head before continuing their assault. Though the Arc Dragon managed to escape, she would later die from her injuries.
The Shape of Motion[]
Cinder and Nokt both use Shatterspin in the Shadow Dojo when they were in a sparring match to prepare for the Tournament of the Sources.
Inside the Maze[]
During his match with Nya, Jay accessed Shatterspin through a Wolf Mask, using it against his opponent before being defeated by her Rising Dragon technique.
United We Fall[]
When Cinder faced Wyldfyre, he won using Shatterspin, breaking out of her Heat wall and delivering a beatdown before getting to the flag.
Truth and Lies[]
Nokt used Shatterspin against Tox, counteracting her Poison gas and easily defeating her, but he almost got disqualified for continuing to attack her.
In his match against Nya, Nokt uses Shatterspin but was defeated by her Rising Dragon.
Clues and Suspects[]
When Nokt goes up against Lloyd, he uses Shatterspin and despite Lloyd's Rising Dragon, Nokt wins due to Lloyd's injures, causing Bleckt to forcefully cancel the match.
The Final Game[]
During the final game of the tournament, Nokt used Shatterspin against Sora, who managed to counter it once with a combined elemental attack of Ice, Quake, and Reflex. He used a Shatterspin blow when Sora used Smoke to sneak up behind her and finally defeated her by kicking her off a hoverpad with a Shatterspin blow.
When Bleckt's rigging was later exposed, Nokt used Shatterspin to uncancel the victory ceremony, causing Roby to accidentally give him all of the Elemental Powers stored in the Elemental Cup.
Elements of Betrayal[]
Nokt and Rox, who was still in possession of Jordana, use Shatterspin against Nya and Zane but were both defeated by their opponents' Rising Dragon techniques. Later, Nokt used Shatterspin to blow Ras and Arin into a pillar and even managed to overpower Cole, who was piloting the Elemental Earth Mech, blasting him into a pillar. When Nokt dueled Kai, he tried to use Shatterspin but was defeated. When retreating, he knocked Ras with Shatterspin, taking the latter with him to exact his revenge.
Dragons Rising, Season 3[]
The Spectral Lands[]
When the Five arrived in the Storm Village, Drix used Shatterspin while searching for the entrance to Thunderfang's prison.
When Thunderfang agreed to give the Forbidden Five more power after they free him, he gave them a gem, infused with his dark dragon energy. Once the Five took it outside, Nokt used Shatterspin to destroy the gem, which released energy that corrupted the Dragonians.
The Great Zane Robbery[]
When Nokt broke into the Freebooters' prison train, he fought Zane and P.I.X.A.L. over the Red Prismatic Blade. He would later use Shatterspin against the pair when the fight was taken outside and atop of the train.
I Alone Can Save Them[]
Zarkt used Shatterspin against Frak, Sora, Lloyd, and Riyu when he went to find the Blue Prismatic Blade.
Fallen Wishes[]
Rox used Shatterspin to fight Nya and Sora while getting Arrakore to fix the Yellow Prismatic Blade. When Sora wished for Rox’s legs to be stuck to the ground, she hit the ground with her fist to activate Shatterspin and break free. Breaking free, Rox continued to fight Nya with Shatterspin, deflecting her Water blasts and taking out Sora and Riyu with a Shatterspin wave. However, Nya dodges the wave and uses Rising Dragon, which Rox repels by activating Shatterspin, which blows both ninja back.
Crashing Together[]
Drix used Shatterspin to battle the Ninja in the World Forest, managing to use it to kick Frak and deflect a laser blast from P.I.X.A.L.'s car. He emerged victorious in recovering the Returning and Blue Prismatic Blades, defeating the Ninja with a Shatterspin blow, leaving them hanging in the tree branches. When launching a sneak attack on Ras, Drix used Shatterspin to knock Ras away before using the Icon of the Source Dragon of Strength to knock him out.
Chaos Unchained[]
When the Ninja catch up to Drix, the insect-like warrior activates Shatterspin but Lloyd uses Rising Dragon to blow him back. Rox used Shatterspin to escape Lloyd’s grasp. When Lloyd used Rising Dragon, Rox flew to him and activated Shatterspin in the air to knock him back. Nokt finished Ras with a Shatterspin blow to exact his revenge on him. When Arin tried to save Ras from Nokt, Rox attacked him from behind and Nokt kicked the latter in the air with Shatterspin before using it again to jump up and kick Arin into the Winds of Chaos.
The Vault of Focus[]
When fighting Cole in Imperium, Nokt uses Shatterspin against his jet. Nokt managed to use Shatterspin to deflect Cole's lasers and launches a wave that damages the jet. Cole then jumps out and uses Spinjitzu to keep himself afloat and charges at Nokt but the Spectral Dragonians grab and restrain him as Nokt plays his magical flute, which steals Cole's soul.
When Doves Cry[]
Upon landing at the impact sight of Nokt's wave while fighting Lloyd and Arin in the Spectral Lands, Rox used Shatterspin against them, hitting Lloyd's Jet Mech, but it had no effect due to her being a ghost and Lloyd's mech being coated in Prismatic Ore.
Chaos Reigns[]
While in the Cave of Bells in Mysterium, Zarkt attempted to use Shatterspin to destroy the focus crystals connected to the Arc Dragon of Focus only to be stopped by Nya, who used Rising Dragon. He attempted again when he saw through the Arc Dragon's eyes but Nya managed to stop him. Zarkt continues to fight Nya, who begins to get exhausted from using Rising Dragon. When Zarkt manages to overpower Nya via Misfortune, he used a Shatterspin strike to knock Kai down and make him lose his Reveal Blade, making him vulnerable to the Spectral Dragonians.
Meanwhile in the other Cave of Bells in Djinjago, Kur attempted to do the same and was stopped by Riyu, but she used a Shatterspin kick to knock the dragon back. Later, Kur charged her Shatterspin to destroy the focus crystals but was stopped by Frak’s Quake powers. Depsite the setback, she used a Shatterspin stomp to slam the Serpentine against the cave wall. Kur uses Shatterspin again to blow Sora's Spinjitzu into the same wall where Frak was knocked out. Before Kur could destroy the crystals, Wyldfyre attempts to knock her back but was defeated. As Kur went to destroy the crystal, Riyu attacked her using a full-fledged Spinjitzu.
Other appearances and mentions[]
The Spell at the Waterfall[]
Egalt mentioned the concept of Shatterspin when teaching the ninja about Rising Dragon. He explained that Shatterspin depended on strength, but Rising Dragon, which focused on movement, can effectively counter it.
The Lycan King[]
When the Children of the Wolf and Garmadon reached Mama Mawa, she shared the story of the Forbidden Five and the Wolf Clan. She clarified that to perform Shatterspin, one must strengthen both the body and mind and wear a Wolf Mask, which grants access to its destructive power, but attempting to ring the Gong of Shattering without elemental mastery will result in a curse on both themselves and the Wyldness.
Official description[]
Master Plan[]
Shatterspin can only be performed by an Elemental Master as evil as Cinder. It is even stronger than the ninja's Spinjitzu![8]
LEGO.com[]
Villains love this banned version of Spinjitzu that creates a dangerous dark red spin. Only the complicated Rising Dragon Technique can defeat Shatterspin. One more reason to train your ninja skills today![9]
LEGO Ninjago Dragons Rising Character Guide[]
A fierce fighting technique used by Elemental Masters who have been empowered by the Gong of Shattering.
Abilities[]
- Chaokinetic Vortex Creation - When charging up Shatterspin, the user creates a tornado of Chaos capable of knocking others back and overpowering Spinjitzu.
- Strength Enhancement - Shatterspin greatly enhances the user's strength, specifically tenfold,[10] imbuing their attacks with a red and black glow that can be infused in combat. Garmadon used this when he successfully punched the massive amount of rubble[6] and Cinder was able to grab Wyldfyre's leg mid-air and break it by channeling his strength directly into his attack before immediately sending her back. Drix was able to send Ras flying with a single Shatterspin punch despite being the weakest member of the Forbidden Five physically. Rox was also capable of knocking Lloyd out of Rising Dragon technique with a single Shatterspin blow after seeing his attack coming.
- Combat infusion: The user can infuse Shatterspin into their fighting skills, making their strikes more powerful. This is demonstrated by Nokt against Tox when he brutally attacked her in the Tournament of the Sources[11] and Cinder when facing off against the ninja in Cloud Kingdom.[12]
- Seismogenesis - The user is able to produce red and black shockwaves by slamming the ground. These shockwaves are incredibly powerful, being strong enough to send a Nindroid flying against a wall.[12]
- Chaokinetic Wave Emission - The user can project powerful Chaos waves. Nokt showed that these waves can be used offensively to knock back a person using Rising Dragon, block their Rising Dragon beam, or attack them directly.
- Wave Attacks - As shown by Nokt and Rox, proficient users are able to use and send the powerful waves of the technique as a controlled manner of attack. They were strong enough to overpower Arc Dragons and the Earth Elemental Mech. Nokt even managed to incapacitate Ras with one blow from these waves.
- Chaokinetic Foot Blasts - The user can shoot Chaos attacks from their feet with kicks.
- Jump/Leap Enhancement - Shatterspin can enhance the user’s jumping abilities, allowing them to push off the air and effectively jump off of it. Nokt performed this to transition into flight after stealing the red Prismatic Blade.
- Elemental Deflection - Shatterspin can be used to deflect elemental attacks.
- Magic Negation - Shatterspin can negate some forms of magic, such as the Runes of Binding that bound the Spectral Crown to the Lycan King's head.
- Wish Negation - Shatterspin can be used to negate wishes, as Rox managed to escape Sora's wish that her feet were stuck to the ground.
- Levitation - When users activate the technique, they can briefly levitate in the air.
Weaknesses[]
- Rising Dragon - This technique is the primary method of defeating Shatterspin.
- Dependence on Wolf Masks and the Gong of Shattering - Although the rudimentary version is accessible to anyone, Elemental Masters need a Wolf Mask activated by the Gong in order to use Shatterspin's true power until they have attained a specific level of mastery. So far, the Forbidden Five are the only ones seen who can use Shatterspin at its full power at any time without a mask and the gong.
- Counter-vibration - As seen in "The Final Game", Shatterspin can be canceled out or backfire on the user by creating a vibrational frequency to counter it. In this case, Sora used Ice to create a barrier and used both Quake and Reflex to cause the ice to vibrate. When Nokt used Shatterspin to attack the vibrating ice wall, it exploded into ice shards that knocked him back.
- Extreme Force - It is possible to negate Shatterspin with enough force, as shown when Ras attacked Nokt from behind using his Source Dragon Icon with his superhuman strength at the climax of their battle, which nullified the effects of Shatterspin.
- Prismatic Ore - Prismatic Ore can block Shatterspin if the user is a ghost.[13]

Trivia[]
- It's the second advanced form of Spinjitzu to be a dark counterpart, the first being Forbidden Spinjitzu.
- Despite both coming from Spinjitzu, Shatterspin was drawn from Thunderfang while Forbidden Spinjitzu was created by the First Spinjitzu Master.
- This is further implied when Chris "Doc" Wyatt states that Shatterspin is not based on Forbidden Spinjitzu.[14] Additionally, the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu cannot be used to enhance Shatterspin.[15]
- When asked which ability would win when pitted against each other, Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated that it depends on the skill levels of the fighters.[16]
- If someone who is not an Elemental Master attempts to perform Shatterspin using the Gong and Mallet of Shattering, they would be cursed. This was seen with Argus, who (upon striking the Gong of Shattering in an effort to perform true Shatterspin) inadvertently became the Lycan King and subsequently unleashed a curse upon the Wyldness.[6]
- The Spinjitzu Burst can't counter Shatterspin.[17] The reason for this was not because it is less powerful but rather it is not suitable to pierce through Shatterspin's defenses and counter its attack, unlike the Rising Dragon technique, which was created for this purpose.[18]
- The Wolf Masks allow any Elemental Master to use Shatterspin, but if they excel far enough in learning it, they would no longer need the Mask to perform the technique.[3]
- When questioned about Shatterspin's role in Arin's Spinjitzu, especially since its energy appeared in Arin's Spinjitzu after he learned it from Frak, who studied Ras' teachings, Chris "Doc" Wyatt suggested to continue watching the show for more insights.[19]
- Chris "Doc" Wyatt suggested that the Forbidden Five could have the ability to generate their own version of the Tornado of Creation by using Shatterspin.[20] Yet, when he was questioned about it again, he replied, "No comment."[21]
- Season 3 of Dragons Rising introduced a power akin to Shatterspin that resembles the Tornado of Creation, referred to as the Winds of Chaos.
- When using a Wolf Mask, it doesn't take long to master Shatterspin.[22]
- It seems the rudimentary blue version takes a short time to learn, given that Garmadon learned it after following some instructions from the ghosts of the Wolf warriors and he quickly taught it to the Children of the Wolf.
- Shatterspin has the potential to surpass both Photacs and the Howlers, depending on how effectively it is used.[20]
- Chi cannot be used to increase the power of Shatterspin.[23]
- The Forbidden Five occasionally stomp their feet before performing Shatterspin in order to increase its strength similarly to getting a running start.[24]
- Of all the Spinjitzu-related martial arts shown in the show thus far, Shatterspin is the only one whose color does not depend on the user's Elemental Power. Instead, it appears in blue or red. This is because Shatterspin cannot be combined with users' elements.[25]
- Chris "Doc" Wyatt explains that even though the Forbidden Five are familiar with Shatterspin, they cannot perform traditional Spinjitzu.[26]
- In the comics, it has been shown and explained that all members of the Wolf Clan, even non-Elemental Masters, have access to Shatterspin, which manifests as blue, while red Shatterspin is the true power and reserved for Elemental Masters only.
- Shatterspin might be influenced by the power of Destruction, given that Thunderfang's dragon energy was initially powered from the many Oni souls he absorbed until he died.
- This is further implied by the wolf ghosts' instruction to Garmadon about performing this martial art, telling him to eliminate everything but "himself and destruction". Additionally, his blue version of the technique appeared to be more potent than those of the wolf warriors or the Children of the Wolf.
