Source Dragon Icons, or Dragon Icons for short, are sacred artifacts that take the form of weapons. Depending on the icon, they have the ability to summon a specific Source Dragon into the Merged Realms.
History[]
Background[]
The Dragon Icons can be created in various ways, however, they can only be used once. Ras successfully obtained two Dragon Icons, specifically crafted to invoke the Source Dragons of Energy and Strength, both which were created by using Elemental Powers. He used the Dragon Icon associated with the Source Dragon of Energy to summon him, subsequently taking him captive in the glass core beneath the City of Imperium to serve as an energy source, although the Imperians couldn't find a way to fully drain the Source Dragon's energy. Nevertheless, due to the inability of the Imperians to contain two Source Dragons simultaneously, Ras opted to retain the Icon of the Source Dragon of Strength, wielding it as his primary weapon in his endeavors.[1]
Dragons Rising, Season 1[]
Years after the Merge, Ras arrived at the Crossroads, brandishing the Icon of the Source Dragon of Strength. He struck the ground with the hammer, creating a shockwave. Ras then threw the hammer at the SA Mark 01, breaking it into pieces.[2]
During the Battle of the Second Monastery, Ras wielded the hammer against the escaped dragons, successfully defeating several of them before confronting Arin and Sora. He aimed to stop them from freeing Riyu, but Sora ultimately managed to restrain him. In the aftermath of the battle, Beatrix took decisive steps against Ras, removing him from his position as leader of the Claws, while Rapton confiscated his hammer.[3][4]
Dragons Rising, Season 2[]
A year after the MergeQuake Storm, Ras developed a new plan to reach the Source Dragons by using Source Dragon Icons. His first move was to perform the Blood Moon Ritual, which would free the Forbidden Five from the Nether-Space. Ras aimed to have them compete in the Tournament of the Sources, hoping they would win and gain the Elemental Powers of the other participants.[5] He intended to use the powers to create enough Dragon Icons at the Cauldron of Realms to summon all the Source Dragons.[1] During his time in the Cloud Kingdom, Ras retrieved his hammer and used it to fight the ninja. During the Battle of the Blood Moon, Ras hurled his hammer at Kai, sending him into the Nether-Space and freeing Nokt. Ras tried to trap Nya in the Nether-Space with his hammer, but Arin and Sora intervened, leading to Ras being struck by a piece of the Elemental Fire Mech.[6][7]
After the final round of the Tournament of the Sources concluded, with Nokt obtaining the Elemental Powers, Ras was ready to advance his plans, only for Nokt and Rox, in Jordana's body, to betray him. They intended to use the Elemental Powers to liberate the rest of the Forbidden Five and Rox's body from the Nether-Space. Armed with his hammer, Ras confronted Nokt and Rox, demanding their compliance. However, Rox corrupted the wolf warriors and Cinder, turning them against Ras. Ras used his hammer to fend off the empowered wolf warriors.[8][9]
At the Monastery of Gates, Ras faced Nokt with Arin, Riyu, and Roby. Ras managed to restrain Nokt momentarily, but Nokt retaliated with Heat, sending Ras reeling. As Ras regained his footing, he joined forces with the ninja to battle Nokt, who briefly wielded Ras' hammer to defeat the ninja. Despite this setback, Ras reclaimed the hammer and countered Nokt's Shatterspin. When the Forbidden Five retreated, Ras tried to stop Nokt but was knocked out and dragged away. In the chaos, Arin seized the hammer and pursued them, but when Nokt destroyed the portal gate to the Cloud Kingdom, both Arin and Ras were transported to the First Land, along with the hammer.[9]
Upon returning from the Tournament of the Sources and rescuing Kai and Bonzle, Lloyd meditates in front of his portraits of Master Wu and Arin, seeking guidance on their whereabouts. However, his contemplation was abruptly interrupted by the Source Dragon of Motion, who commends him for uncovering the culprit behind the death of the three Arc Dragons, a victory that fails to bring Lloyd the relief he seeks. Lloyd expresses his concern about the Forbidden Five still being at large. Despite his doubts, the Source Dragon of Motion assures him that their nefarious plans have been halted for some time, and that he has successfully obstructed Ras from reaching the Source Dragons. She implored Lloyd not to question his decisions or his worth. As a token of appreciation for his deeds, the Source Dragon of Motion presents Lloyd with her Dragon Icon created from one of her scales. She emphasizes that he must only call upon her when the situation truly demands her intervention.[9]
Dragons Rising, Season 3[]
As Arin continued to travel with Ras, he carried the hammer icon on his back when the two arrived in the Spectral Lands to obtain the Healing elixir to heal Ras' injuries. After uncovering the Super Storm Jet, the two went to the Land of Lee, where Ras brought Arin to his parents but found their graves. While training, Ras told Arin to undo The Merge, they would need all seven Source Dragons, who heed the calls to their own icons, which is how he imprisoned the Source Dragon of Energy but due to Imperium being unable to hold two Source Dragons, he had to spare his hammer icon, which he used on his endeavors. Ras tells Arin they would need a way to create the other six Icons and ways to contain them. The two then flew to the World Forest to the Temple of the Dragon Cores, where they were attacked by a bounty hunter named Rogue, who caused the jet to crash into the World Forest, where Ras used the hammer to temporally knock the bounty hunter away.
After running into Drix and the corrupted Dragonian Warriors, Ras used his hammer icon to defeat several warriors before Drix attacks him, making him loose the hammer and using it against Ras. After claiming the final two Prismatic Blades and a present for Nokt. One of the Dragonian Warrior carried the hammer icon with Ras. When Nokt noticed Ras, he took the hammer and a captive Ras to get his revenge on him. Nokt used his sword to cut the branches and giving Ras his hammer, having no interest in fighting someone weakened. Ras used his hammer and battled Nokt but lost when Nokt used Shatterspin, which injured him again.
After Thunderfang was released, Ras briefly lost his hammer and reclaimed it to help him walk when he saw Arin about to preform Object Spinjitzu.
After the release of Thunderfang, Arin, Sora, and Ras ventured into the Underworld with the intention of using the Forge of the Forgotten to create a Dragon Icon. However, activating the forge required someone to enter the Casket of Bones, sacrificing their life in the process. Ras intended for Sora or Arin to enter the casket. Overcome with regret, Arin confronted Ras, leading to a battle that ended with him and Sora subduing Ras by burying him under rubble.[10] Once he recovered, Ras managed to have someone else enter the Casket, enabling him to use the forge to create another Source Dragon Icon. With two Icons in hand, Ras fought the Skulkin and Greenbone Warriors, ultimately emerging victorious before confronting Geo, Alfonzo Frohicky, and Rontu at the Monastery of Spinjitzu in pursuit of Wu's research. Rontu was taken aback upon discovering that Ras possessed two Source Dragon Icons, considering it impossible.[11][12][13]
Other appearances and mentions[]
Truth and Lies[]
Ras revealed to Rox, who was possessing Jordana, that his intentions of winning the tournament are to use the Elemental Powers to create Dragon Icons that can summon the Source Dragons to the Merged Lands. Rox asked if a Dragon Icon was how he captured the Source Dragon of Energy and Ras admitted she's right. Unknown to Ras, Nokt was spying on them.
Methods of creation[]
Creation by the Source Dragons[]
The Source Dragons themselves are capable of creating icons by removing one of their own scales, transforming it into a Source Dragon Icon, and gifting it to someone of their choosing. This method was used by the Source Dragon of Motion who gifted her Icon to Lloyd.
Creation in the Cauldron of Realms[]
Using a combination of various Elemental Powers, the Source Dragon Icons can be created within the Cauldron of Realms. Ras was planning on using this method after gaining all the Elemental Powers during the Tournament of the Sources but after being unsuccessful he abandoned this plan.
Creation using the Forge of the Forgotten[]
A more mysterious method of creating the Icons involves the Casket of Bones, which hails from the Underworld and is found in the Forge of the Forgotten. By entering the Casket of Bones in a sacrificial manner, one can power the forge to create Source Dragon Icons without using a multitude of Elemental Powers. Ras and Arin learned about this method from the Spirit of the Temple and decided to use it to create more Icons.

Trivia[]
- While the Source Dragon of Motion created a Dragon Icon out of one of her scales, it is unknown whether or not all Dragon Icons created by Source Dragons are made from their scales as well.
- A Source Dragon Icon is almost as powerful as a Dragon Core.[14]
- All of the known Source Dragon Icons are based on weapons used by the ninja who corresponds with the Source. It is unknown if this is intentional or just a coincidence.
- The Icon of the Source Dragon of Motion is a red dagger or a short sword, which are used similarly to the katanas and swords used by Kai, the ninja of Fire, one of the Elemental Powers of the Motion Source Dragon.
- The Icon of the Source Dragon of Strength is a golden hammer and this type of weapon is used by Cole, the ninja of Earth, one of the Elemental Powers of the Strength Source Dragon.
- The Source Dragon Icon that Ras created using the Forge of the Forgotten is a bone-like dao sword which is mainly used by Lloyd, the ninja of Energy, one of the Elemental Powers of the Life Source Dragon. However, the color scheme and appearance resembles more the Balance Source Dragon.
- It could also be seen as similar to the Dragonbone Blade used by Wu and the one like appearance may also hint at the death of the Balance Source Dragon, whose color scheme also mirrors Wu.
- The Icon of the Source Dragon of Energy's design was revealed in a non-canon game, Dragon Adventures. It is a double-blade polearm which, however, is not similar to any of Jay's main weapons (nunchucks or a kusarigama). However, its blades resemble the Lightning Daggers Jay used as a Rogue. Due to the non-canon status of the game it still remains unknown if this is the Icon's final design that would be used in the show.
- Source Dragons are not obliged to obey the orders of those who summon them using Dragon Icons.[15]
- A Source Dragon Icon can be destroyed, but not easily.[16]
- When forging Source Dragon Icons the elemental powers that are used to forge it don’t vanish upon the creation of the Source Dragon Icon.[17]
