As the citizens of Ninjago scramble to leave the city, Wojira and Kalmaar arrive..[3]

In the Endless Sea, people in a ship are in trouble as a powerful storm happens. The captain calls the Coast Guard on land and tells him about their situation, as it is happening, Wojira comes out of the sea with Kalmaar on her head, they head towards Ninjago to destroy it. As soon as Wojira dives back into sea, the storm calm down.
At Ninjago City pier, the Coast Guard is fishing and sleeping until he is woken up by a tug, which was caused by Glutinous. The sight of unknown creature scares the people away, while the coast guard confirms it is Ninjago when asked. Glutinous states that he needs to speak to the ninja, as the coast guard realizes there's danger coming.
Jay starts walking into Benny's Arcade Emporium. Where he sees Prime Empire and talks to the paperboys about his adventure into the game. He is called over by Nya, who is playing Dancy Pants. They play the game and Nya creates the move called “Electric Jaya”. They play the game until it breaks to which Wu calls them for emergency.
They are at the Ninjago City Police Station to talk to Glutinous. The scientist warns them that Kalmaar and Wojira are coming to Ninjago and that the amulet given to them was a fake. Wu sends out everyone and tells them to prepare for the worse, he calls P.I.X.A.L. and asks if the submersible combat crafts have can be repaired in time. A warning is passed to all of Ninjago but the warning may be too late as violent storms start appearing in Ninjago, scaring all in Ninjago City. Trivia[]
- Narrator: Wu
- Jay and Nya dance in the arcade, continuing their dancing hobby from "Let's Dance" and "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back."
- Nya named her dance the "Electric Jaya", by fusing her name with Jay's. In real life, "Jaya" is used by fans as the name of the couple's relationship.
- This episode marks the final time Nya wears her Armor suit in the present day of the series.
- This is the only episode that is not a season premiere to not have an intro, excluding the second, third, and fourth pilot episodes.
- This also makes it the second episode in this season to not have an intro, the first being the season premiere of Seabound, "A Big Splash."
- Interestingly, the German name of "Dead Man's Squall" is "Die Ruhe vor dem Sturm", which also translates to "The Calm Before the Storm."
Cultural references[]
- The title is based on the common phrase, "the calm before the storm," meaning "a period of quiet that comes before a time of activity or violence."
- One of the characters in the arcade wears a hat featuring a red maple leaf resembling the one on the Canadian Flag. This is likely a reference to WildBrain being based in Vancouver.
- When Nya says, "Stay on target!" this is most likely a reference to the Star Wars film A New Hope, where a rebel pilot tells his commander the same lines when he is starting to panic.
- Kalmaar inserting the Storm Amulet to Wojira's second slot is similar to "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" from Nexo Knights, when Jestro inserts the last Forbidden Power to the Stone Colossus. As a result, both Wojira and the Stone Colossus were reawakened.
- When they were reawakened, they both began to be used by the main antagonist, with Kalmaar striking the Wave Amulet with his trident to control Wojira while Monstrox entered the Colossus's mouth.
- Also, both locations they were trapped (Temple of Wojira and Mount Thunderstrox) were either destroyed or heavily damaged.
- When they were reawakened, they both began to be used by the main antagonist, with Kalmaar striking the Wave Amulet with his trident to control Wojira while Monstrox entered the Colossus's mouth.
Continuity[]
- This episode takes place two days after "Master of the Sea," as Glutinous says Kalmaar woke Wojira two days ago.
- The Mary Louise makes a reappearance in this episode.
- Jay makes reference to the League of Jay, and his title of "Superstar Rockin' Jay".
- This episode marks the final time Nya wears her Armor suit in the present day.
- This is not the first time that Ninjago City has been flooded by a big wave. It was first in the non-canon short "Lloyd's Late."
- This marks the first appearance of Gayle Gossip, Vinny, and Okino since "Game Over."
- This episode shares similarities with "The Darkness Comes."
- Glutinous asking to speak with the ninja, Wu and Benthomaar to warn them about Kalmaar and Wojira's incoming assault is similar to how Garmadon called Lloyd from Kryptarium Prison to warn him about the inevitable arrival of the Oni.
- In both instances, Wu is able to gather the ninja to warn the citizens of Ninjago City, although unlike with "The Darkness Comes," they are actually able to warn them all just before the threats arrive.
Errors[]
- While telling the ninja that Kalmaar awoken Wojira, Glutinous mentions the fake Storm Amulet from the Island of the Keepers. However, he was never told about the fake amulet nor where it came from by Kalmaar, who only replied that he got the Storm Amulet by using the same trick the ninja did to him in "The Storm Amulet."
- When Jay and Nya is practicing the Electric Jaya, they are said to break the record, however, there is no score points on screen.
