The Forest of Spirits is the ninth episode of the second season of Ninjago: Dragons Rising and the 29th episode overall.
Synopsis[]
Sorceress searches the storehouse for a spell to rescue Bonzle while Arin intercepts a special package. Then, the remaining Ninja infiltrate the ritual.[1]
LEGO's YouTube Channel: The ninja need to stop J…wait, what’s her name? Jessica? Joanna? Nevermind, it’s not important – they just need to get Bonzle away from whatever her name is so Lord can’t complete the ritual![2]
ITVX: Kai, Sora, and Wyldfyre infiltrate the Shadow Dojo as Ras begins the Blood Moon Ritual while Cole and Zane try to escape the Sorceress’s spell vault.[3]
Extended: Ras orders the destruction of the Cloud Kingdom and prepares the Blood Moon ritual as Kai, Wyldfyre, and Sora defeat Wolf Mask soldiers and infiltrate the Shadow Dojo. Cole, Zane, and the Sorceress experiment with magic to escape the Spell Storehouse and rush to the Cloud Kingdom where they believe Bonzle was taken. Arin and Riyu cross paths with Jordana only to face a greater enemy.[4]

Young Ras meeting his master for the first time
Many years earlier, a young Ras ends up trapped in a chasm while trying to retrieve his ball. He remains unable to escape, until a mysterious being presents themself to him. In the present time, Ras looks at the Blood Moon before learning the rest of the Theroxian texts have been translated. He orders Cinder to travel to the Shadow Dojo, destroy the Cloud Kingdom, and kill the Writers of Destiny.
Down on the ground, Kai continues to climb the cliff in his Climber Mech with Sora and Wyldfyre, and despite the latter trying to deny her fear of heights and loose boulders, they reach the top, only to be ambushed by Wolf Mask Warriors.
Somewhere in the Wyldness, Lloyd and Nya try to make their way to the dojo, until Lloyd gets a vision of the ritual in process, the Cloud Kingdom’s destruction, and Euphrasia sent into a portal, which subsequently releases one member of the Forbidden Five.

Meanwhile, after some toying around, Jordana loads Bonzle into her buggy before driving away. In the magical storagehouse, Zane manages to disable Jordana’s forcefield holding him, Cole, and Gandalaria before they try to find a way out by searching for a trapdoor. However, one was revealed to be a raging Fang Mouth, another one had the darkness of the tunnel made solid, and one door led to a series of progressively smaller doors, until it reached a small one that opened to reveal Lava-Tides dancing around a party toaster. Without any proper ways out, they resolved to find a magic potion that could unlock the door.

While walking through the jungle, Arin and Riyu emerge and find a path, until they spot Jordana’s buggy passing by before Riyu puts Arin on his back and surprises the latter by flying. They eventually catch up to Jordana, who becomes annoyed that Arin doesn’t remember her name, tries to ram them until Arin climbs into the buggy. Jordana prepares to attack him, only for Riyu to throw her off. Briefly introducing himself to Bonzle, Arin takes control of the buggy and drives off a cliff, nearly descending fully until he uses the buggy’s grappling hook to reach the other side. He admits that it was his first time in a real car, as he is used to mechs. Without any way to get out of the box, Bonzle tells Arin to get far away from Ras as he can.
Back by the cliff, Kai, Sora, and Wyldfyre take down the Wolf Warriors before noticing some passing warriors. During the battle, Wyldfyre discovers her leg is healed, and Sora comes up with the idea of disguising themselves as warriors, taking uniforms from the ones they had already defeated.
While trying to find a way out of the storehouse, Gandalaria tries to find the correct spell in a box full of items, but finds useless ones that include an anti-gravity potion, including its reversal, slime that could take and return a person's voice, which Cole ends up as the unfortunate victim, a potion that causes the affected entity to grow big or shrink, which Zane ends up being the victim of, a potion that turns someone into a dog, which Cole, again, ends up as the victim of, but managed to revert back to normal when he sneezed, and eventually, Gandalaria finds a potion that can instantly open anything hard to open. But when she goes to open the doors, she ends up tripping and sends the potion crashing into a sarcophagus, disturbing a Geckle mummy inside. Cole soon comes up with the idea of using Zane’s current predicament of size changes by having the latter shrink to fit through the keyhole and once he regrows large, opening it from the other side, which works. Seeing the Cloud Kingdom and spotting it lose altitude, they head for it in an effort to help. Cole and Zane use Spinjitzu to climb up the Cloud Kingdom's anchor chain while Gandalaria uses her hat to fly up.

Ras defeats Arin
Meanwhile, Kai, Sora, and Wyldfyre reach the Shadow Dojo disguised, as Ras has Cinder position Euphrasia, Suetonius, and three more Cloud Monks as sacrifices for the Ritual of the Blood Moon. After noticing Jordana is late, Ras is informed by her of Arin’s interference in retrieving Bonzle. Provoked, Ras pursues Arin himself as Cinder teases Jordana for her failure. Ras manages to catch up to Arin and Riyu before incapacitating the two despite their attempts to hold him off. Ras retorts that Arin reminds him of when he himself was younger, before meeting his master. Ras leaves with the buggy and Bonzle, and tells Arin to find a true master to teach him strength. Before losing consciousness, Arin spots Lloyd and Nya approaching him, but his blurred vision makes him believe it's his parents. Intending to use Ras' departure as a moment to strike, Kai, Sora, and Wyldfyre head for the sacrifices, only for Ras to return prematurely with Bonzle.

- Zane pulling the voice stealing slime off of Cole's mouth is similar to when Zane was trying to pull the piece of metal off of Jay's mouth when Nadakhan wished for him to be silent in "The Way Back".
- Zane being able to change into miniature and giant sizes may be a callback to Lloyd and Nya's miniature and giant forms respectively in the Wu's Teas short, "Secret Teas."
- Also, Cole being temporarily transformed into a dog is identical to Jay turning into an octopus from said short.
- Cole telling Zane in Gandalaria's storagehouse to go through the keyhole to let them out is similar to when Jay told Cole to "Be the key" when they were locked inside the dungeon with Nimbus in "Kingdom Come".
- Kai, Sora and Wyldfyre disguising themselves as wolf warriors to spy on the ritual closely resembles the scene featuring Kai, Jay, Cole and Lloyd disguising themselves as Anacondrai Cultists in "Only One Can Remain."
- When Kai is wearing his disguise, his hair is shorter than it usually is making it look similar to his original hairstyle he had from the Pilot Season-Season 7 of the original series.
- This episode marks the first time that Arin properly shouts "NINJA-GO!" as he is about to do Spinjitzu and is also the first of the new ninja to use the phrase.
Cultural references[]
- Zane's change of size could be a reference to a Marvel character, Ant-Man, being able to miniaturize and increase size.
Errors[]
- When Zane is standing on Cole's hand before going through the keyhole of Gandalaria's storagehouse, his feet are clipping into Cole's hand.
