Synopsis[]
The ninjas' investigation into the vengestone smuggling mission leads them to an abandoned subway line — where they run into the New Ninja.[1]
Extended: The Ninjas investigate the vengestone operation, but Miss Demeanor gets the drop on them - after a humiliating rescue by the New Ninjas, the Ninjas return home and fight each other. Nya manifests her water-form from a spilled glass of water and asks the Ninjas for help draining her elemental powers - against Master Wu's wishes, they plan on asking old foe Aspheera for help.[2]
LEGO's YouTube channel: Jay and the other Ninja are still saddened by their lost friend and track down Miss Demeanor's next shipment of Vengestone. After their battle with Miss Demeanor is interrupted by the New Ninja, Nya warns the team that she can only return if she gives up her powers!
Can Jay and the others work with the New Ninja to stop Miss Demeanor's plan? Will they find a way to bring Nya back from the sea?[3]
Plot[]
At the hangar bay, Cole ponders how so much Vengestone could be moved without any detection. Zane theorizes the Vengestone has to be moving underground, but Lloyd states that the Serpentine would know about it. Cole decides to start over with what they knew, which frustrates Kai since they've been going in circles for hours. Lloyd asks Jay to see if he has any ideas, but he is unfocused, still mourning Nya's loss by looking at glasses of water. Impatient, Kai shouts at him, and a grumpy Jay replies that he doesn't know. He then says that they cannot work together due to Nya's absence. Kai counters this by accusing Jay of being useless, which nearly causes a fight before Lloyd suggests a break. Jay begins to state that taking a break wouldn't work when a pizza box catches his eye, giving him an idea.
The ninja head to the N line of the subway tunnel where they reach a brick wall. They look for opening mechanisms, but are unable to find any. Suddenly, the ninja hear a sound come from one of the crates near the brick wall. Cole cautiously approaches the crate and removes the tarp, revealing an old man sleeping on Vengestone. He hops out of the crate and asks for a signature from the ninja, when flames suddenly appear from behind.
The ninja turn to find Miss Demeanor and her henchmen. She is pleased to see the real ninja instead of the New Ninja she fought back at the docks. Kai attempts to use his powers to no avail, since he is surrounded by Vengestone which suppresses Elemental Powers. Observing this, Miss Demeanor orders her gang to attack the ninja. While fighting, the ninja are greatly outmatched, showing a lack of chemistry and strength. Cole knocks Jay over with Spinjitzu, Lloyd is nearly hit by a henchman Zane is fighting, and Kai and Zane struggle to fend off "low-level thugs." Miss Demeanor then taunts the ninja's sloppy fighting.
Just then, the New Ninja arrive and start their catchphrase, but Miss Demeanor interrupts them and orders her henchmen to attack them instead. The ninja are upset with the New Ninja's interference, but they ignore them, taking out the thugs and saving the ninja. The Teal Ninja deals a final blow and defeats Miss Demeanor.
Aboveground, the ninja and New Ninja watch as Miss Demeanor and her henchmen are escorted into police cars. The Police Commissioner heads over to them. Lloyd thinks that he is addressing them, but he walks past and congratulates the New Ninja instead. Afterwards, Cole thanks the New Ninja for their help. The Fuchsia Ninja reveals that they were inspired by the ninja to protect the weak and calls the ninja "old-timers." This offends Kai, and the Teal Ninja doubles down by calling the ninja "out of shape." Lloyd points out that they tracked down the villain, but the Teal Ninja reveals that they had planted a tracking device in the crate, which would have led them to the true villain if the ninja hadn't interfered. The Orange Ninja then informs her team that the mayor wanted to thank them personally and they leave with a smoke bomb, after which Kai voices his hatred towards the new ninja team.
Back at the hangar bay, Lloyd freaks out in fear of being replaced by the New Ninja, and Cole tries to reassure him otherwise. Jay mentions how the ninja are coping with the loss of Nya differently. Kai cuts in and calls Jay out for speaking to glasses of water, but accidentally knocks one over. He attempts to apologize, but Jay kicks him furiously. They then attack each other, while Zane tries to calm them down to no avail. Kai launches a fireball at Jay, which destroys Cole's Rock Cycle instead and activates the sprinkler.
As the two square off, the spilled water starts glowing and Nya materializes her humanoid form with it. Struggling to keep her shape, she tells the ninja that they need to drain her powers to return her to normal. Zane then freezes her immediately, citing that it was the only way to keep her form. With Nya's last words in mind, Lloyd suggests freeing Aspheera. Wu rejects the idea, saying that she can't be trusted, and that he can't be a part of it. Despite this, the rest of the ninja are in agreement with the plan.

Trivia[]
- Narrator: Jay
Cultural references[]
- The title of the episode is a reference to the film The Shape of Water.
- The final blow the Teal Ninja deals to Miss Demeanor resembles a Shoryuken from the Street Fighter series of video games.
Continuity[]
- When Jay is looking at the pizza box, it causes him to think of the unfinished N line.
- It is possible that looking at the pizza reminded him of the events in "Darkness Shall Rise," where he was kidnapped by the Serpentine generals while delivering pizza to them, and was nearly run over by their subway in an unused subway tunnel.
- Jay's smiley face pin reappears since its absence in "Farewell the Sea".
- The old man smuggling Vengestone has the same appearance as Bob the Intern, although he is not the same character.[4]
- This marks the final appearance of Zane's Golden Shurikens, since the other ninja's weapons appear later in the season.
- Jay and Kai's brief fight resembles Jay and Cole's fight during the Tournament of Elements in "Versus."
- These fights involved Jay fighting one of the ninja in a situation revolving around Nya; Jay fought Cole over Nya's love following the love triangle in Rebooted, whilst Jay fought Kai for accidentally knocking over a glass of water which he believed to contain Nya's essence, in addition to him still grieving over her supposed loss.
- The shot of Kai and Jay shooting their elemental blasts at each other even resembles the shot of Cole and Jay shooting their elemental blasts at each other, with Kai taking Cole's spot, although neither ninja overwhelmed the other with their blasts this time.
- Coincidentally, the soundtrack is the same as the one used in "Versus" when showcasing the battles of Neuro vs. Bolobo, Kai vs. Ash, and Griffin Turner vs. Gravis.
- Also, these fights have occurred in the third episode of their respective seasons.
- When Nya says, "There's...a way back..." she is most likely referring to the episode of the same name.
- The reference is even coincidental, as much like how Jay's final wish reversed the events of Skybound, in addition to Nya's death, the ninja, with Aspheera's help, would later reverse Nya's aquatic form back to her human form in "A Painful Promise."
- Lloyd refers to the events of "Boobytraps and How to Survive Them" and how Kai's powers were drained.
Errors[]
- When Jay looks into the glass of water, his freckles are not visible on the reflection.
- When the old man mistook the ninja for the ones that bought the Vengestone, he said that the Vengestone he was transporting came from the Kingdom of Shintaro. However, "A Sinister Shadow" revealed that the Vengestone was no longer being transferred from the mines due to them being shut down after the battle for Shintaro Mountain, which was why Miss Demeanor was smuggling Vengestone for the anonymous buyer in the first place.
- It is likely that he meant that the Vengestone simply originated from Shintaro, but had been transported before Vangelis was dethroned.
