“And, like me, I like my plans simple. We sneak in, learn Airjitzu from the ghost of Sensei Yang, then get out before sunup.”
Cole to the ninja

The Temple on Haunted Hill is the fourth episode of the fifth season of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu and the 48th episode overall. It aired on July 2, 2015, in the United States on Cartoon Network.

Synopsis[]

The Ninja hear of another way to learn Airjitzu - from the ghost of Sensei Yang at his haunted temple - but there's a warning; if you are trapped in it by sunrise, you will become a ghost, too. Meanwhile, doubting she's a Water Ninja, Nya quits her training to take Ronin to her Samurai X cave...but has a run-in with Morro.

Plot[]

At Steep Wisdom, Master Wu continues to train Nya to become the Water Ninja, but she argues with him and declares she's a Samurai. Misako then approaches and reveals that "a stranger" has invaded their shop. Ronin explains that since the ninja failed to get the Scroll of Airjitzu from Morro, Kai sold him their shares of the tea shop. He then told the ninja of another way to learn Airjitzu; by going to Sensei Yang's Haunted Temple.

The ninja arrive at the temple and hear from the tour guide that anyone left in the temple by dawn will become a ghost. When the tour bus leaves, the ninja emerge from their hiding places and enter the temple, unknown of what lies ahead of them. Meanwhile, Morro examines the second clue of the staff, Bansha says they need more than Airjitzu, Soul Archer and Ghoultar implies they need to possess more vessels, and Morro suggests they need more vehicles.

In the temple, the ninja are searching for the scroll, while Cole fears about transforming into a ghost if they don't leave the temple by morning. Jay reads a book about Master Yang and his strict methods of teaching. Later, the ninja listen to a strange sound coming from the other side of the temple. Cole walks there and the other ninja follow him and found Master Yang's Dojo. Cole asks who knocked on the door. Master Yang then says to the ninja, "As iron sharpens iron, sensei sharpens students." At that moment, several swords try to attack the ninja while they escape. Zane suggests they head for the dumbwaiter, but when they were inside, Master Yang appeared in front of the ninja. When the group opens the door to escape, they discover they were trapped in an ethereal inter-dimensional realm.

In the tea farm, Ronin implies they need more money, and not friends. Nya said they need to go to the Samurai X Cave, Ronin suggests they go to the Bounty. At that moment, Nya offers a bag of money to Ronin if he can take her to the cave.

Meanwhile, the ninja try to think of a way to escape the temple. Kai sees a strange picture of water inside. When he knocked it, the room begins to fill with water. Yang returns and implies that "As iron sharpens iron, sensei sharpens student." Kai, having a fear of water, tries to open the door, which he did. Later, the ninja understood that Master Yang is trying to teaching them about their fear and to face them together.

Meanwhile, Nya and Ronin travel over the desert with R.E.X.. Ronin tells Nya about he made a bad bet with Soul Archer, and he must provide enough money to pay off his debt, or his soul will go to the Cursed Realm. When they close in on the cave, they discover they are not alone; Morro and his group try to get one of Nya's mechs. At that moment, Nya activates her Samurai Mech to fight the ghost, in which she fails to even make contact. Ronin saves Nya from one of Soul Archer's arrows using an Aeroblade. Morro tried to summon more allies, but Nya destroys the Allied Armor, forcing Morro to get rid of it before it finally exploded. Ghoultar finally possesses the Samurai Mech, turning it into a corrupted version of it. Morro sent his forces to destroy Nya and Ronin. They try to escape but Morro and his group finally surround them. It miraculously begins to rain, forcing the ghosts to hide. Morro implies that they can leave the two before escaping on his dragon. Ronin says that the rain must have been caused by Nya, implying she truly is the Water Ninja.

Meanwhile, in the temple, the ninja are ready to confront the tests of Sensei Yang like a team by tying themselves together. Kai asks Zane and Jay about their fear. Suddenly, Zane falls into a panic to see Morro. Kai understands that this is another test of Sensei Yang, and they pursued the false Morro. When he hides in the attic, Jay tells the group about his fears over attics. The ninja climb the stairs and find the impostor. When they faced him, Sensei Yang appears to congratulate the ninja for passing his tests and gives them the scroll of Airjitzu.

At that moment, the transformation of ghost begins. Sensei Yang warning the ninja if they fail to leave the temple at the last chime, they will stay ghosts forever, forcing them to escape. When they're close to the door, Cole drops the scroll and unties himself to retrieve it. After the ninja are outside of the temple, they start to question where Cole is. Cole finally gets out of the temple, and they are stunned. Jay replies to Cole saying that he didn't get out of the temple in time. In shock, Cole looks at himself and sadly says "I'm a ghost.” Cole falls to his knees, and is comforted by his friends as Master Yang starts to laugh at the Ninja of Earth's fate from inside the temple.

Continuity[]

  • Patty Keys mentions that the Temple dates back to the Edo Period. This is further explored in Tommy Andreasen's non-canon novel, Way of the Departed.
  • Pictures of a mud monster and Wu's Academy can be seen behind Cole at one point in the Temple.
  • Nya loses her Samurai Mech in this episode, setting up how she will need to act without it and any devices of the sort in the future and unlock her True Potential by herself.
  • This is the last appearance of Morro's dragon.
  • Up to "Day of the Departed," this is the last episode of the series where Cole appears in his human form, as he is turned into a ghost at the end of the episode. Upon returning to his human form, he has a scar until he adopts his movie design for Sons of Garmadon, meaning this is the last time his original design is seen in a new context apart from the flashback in "The Jade Princess."

Errors[]

  • During Patty Keys's explanation of the temple, the Wu's Academy student's left arm disappears.[1]
  • At one point, the grandfather clock closes by itself then opens again.
  • At one shot when the ninja were chasing Morro while being tied together with the rope, Jay and Zane switched places.
  • Patty Keys refers to Yang as the notorious sensei without a pupil. However, he does have students.
    • She also says, "But, if you listen closely, maybe we'll be able to hear the Ghost of Sensei Yang himself looking for his lost pupils." However, they were with him (or, at least in the temple) the whole time, also revealed in "Wishmasters."
  • When the Samurai Mech gets possessed, Ghoultar disappears but reappears in the next shot.
  • Cole unties himself to retrieve the scroll but the rope can be seen tied again for the rest of the episode.
  • When Nya and Ronin were looking at the ghosts in her cave the first time, Ronin had a mask in the back view. However, in front view, he wasn't wearing a mask.
  • When Morro took off the Allied Armor of Azure, the white circle stayed on his torso.
  • When Cole says "There's no time to complain, we just have to move!" his mouth isn't moving.
  • When Zane says "ME EITHER!" his voice doesn't have its titanium body-filter.
  • When Nya and Ronin arrive at the Samurai X Cave, Nya states that nobody else knows about the cave. This is false, as her team, as well as the Elemental Masters and Chen, knew about the cave.
  • When Morro stops Ronin and Nya from boarding R.E.X, Ronin's mouth does not move when he gasps.
    • This also happens to Ghoultar, when he says he'll never them leave.
