“The games were created forever ago to celebrate the gifts of the Source Dragons. So Elemental Masters are called to compete. It's pretty much a celebration of your awesomeness.”

The Tournament of the Sources is a tournament participated in by Elemental Masters in the City of Temples. It is hosted in honor of the Source Dragons and how they created Elemental Powers.

History[]

Background[]

Millennia ago, Roake hosted the Tournament of the Sources to honor the Source Dragons and the Elemental Powers they created.[1] Every few years,[2] the tournament's city and the Dragon Stone Shrine would shift from realm to realm each competition, and Elemental Masters from their respective realm would compete to be crowned Champion of the Sources. Although, in some cases, Elemental Masters from a different realm would travel to compete.[3]

They Gather for the Feast[]

Before the tournament began, a banquet was held as a pre-tournament festivity. The ninja entered the banquet hall and saw many Elemental Masters. Roby handed Wyldfyre a menu and showed the team around. Nya saw Tox and Mr. Pale and went over to talk to them. Zane followed behind her. The rest of the group continued walking when Jordana pulled Sora away. Jordana begged for Sora’s help before the former's eyes flashed red. She stepped away and Cinder and Nokt stood next to her. Wyldfyre jumped in front of Sora and, seeking revenge, tried to use her power on Cinder. The security bots stopped her and Roby said that fighting outside the arena was prohibited and punishable by expulsion.

Lloyd tried to talk to Zur but the latter did not respond. Lloyd bumped into Ras but their unfriendly conversation was interrupted by a bell Roby was ringing and imitating. Roby started to give a speech when Zeatrix burst in the room. She expressed her anger toward the ninja and Roby for dethroning her sister first and not inviting her to the banquet respectively. Ras stepped in and she tells him she knows he conspired with her sister to take her father’s life. She stormed out of the hall and the annoyed Roby gave up on his speech. Later that night, a disturbance woke everyone up and they discover that Lloyd had detained a bot that tried to kill him before Ras and Zur show that they too were attacked. Tox soon revealed that their weapons, Gilba Thorns, were from the Mother Garden and everyone, except the ninja, demand Zant-Tanz, the Master of Plants and Mother Garden native, be expelled, which he voluntarily complied, yet insists he is not the culprit.

Inside the Maze[]

Roby flew around the Games Plaza and announced Zane and Zur as the first two elemental masters that were competing against one another. Bleckt rang the bell and the two started fighting. Zur avoided Zane's attacks with his power of reflex. Zane eventually managed to use his ice power to freeze Zur's leg in place. But before he could land the final blow, the ice melted and Zur got away. The Devonian landed a blow on Zane and knocked him down. Roby announced Zur as the winner and used the Elemental Cup to transfer Zane's power to the Devonian.

Roby announced Nya and Jay as the next two fighters. Roby explained the rules of the match and stated the competitor who obtained the dagger first would win. Bleckt rang the bell and the game began. Nya dodged Jay's attacks and purposely avoided taking clear shots at him. Jay told Nya he knew she was lying to him about his past. Nya tried to tell him the truth but Jay refuted it and told her what Ras told him happened. Jay then put on a Wolf Mask and Ras shattered his goodness using the Gong and Mallet of Shattering. Jay used Shatterspin and Nya used Rising Dragon to counteract it. Nya and Jay raced up the tower for the dagger. Nya grabbed the dagger and won the fight. Roby announced Nya as the winner and used the Elemental Cup to transfer Jay's power to her.

United We Fall[]

Roby announced Sora and Kizzy as the next two competitors. Roby explained the rules of the match and said whoever kicks the drum at the end of the obstacle course would win. Bleckt rang the bell and the game commenced. Sora used her power of technology and turned a part from the obstacle course into a staff that helped her balance. Sora kicked the drum and won the game. Roby announced Sora the winner and used the Elemental Cup to transfer Kizzy's power to her.

Roby announced Wyldfyre and Cinder as the following two competitors. Roby explained that whoever got the flag and took it out of the circle in the middle of the Plaza would win. The bell rang and the two competitors raced for the flag. Wyldfyre blocked Cinder's path using her heat power. Ras rang the Gong of Shattering and Cinder put on a Wolf Mask to use Shatterspin. He used it to beat Wyldfyre and easily won the game. Roby announced Cinder the winner and transferred Wyldfyre’s power to Cinder using the Elemental Cup.

Truth and Lies[]

At the Games Plaza, Euphrasia and Zeatrix battled on floating platforms. Zeatrix used her elemental power of Shockwave to knock Euphrasia off her platform. Roby used the Elemental Cup to transfer Euphrasia’s power of Wind to Zeatrix. In the following round, Tox fought Nokt. Nokt used Shatterspin to easily defeat Tox but continued to take shots at her when Roby had already declared him the winner. The Security Bots took Tox away on a stretcher. Lloyd fought Mr. Pale. He blinded Lloyd with a beam of light which prompted the Green Ninja to ask him about his new ability. Mr. Pale turned invisible and Lloyd used Spinjitzu. This caused dust to fly onto Mr. Pale and reveal his location. Lloyd kicked Mr. Pale off the floating platform and Roby declared Lloyd the winner. Roby used the Elemental Cup to transfer Mr. Pale's elemental power of Light to Lloyd.

Roby announced Cole and Frak as the following two competitors. Roby explained the rules of the game, saying that first person to ring the bell in the center of the obstacle course would win. Bleckt rang his bell and the game began. Frak used his power of Quake to shake the obstacles. This caused Cole to fall off the course. Cole used his power over Earth to make a pillar of rock for him to stand on. Frak used his power again and Cole commented on how the course seemed like it was made for Frak's power. Frak rang the bell and Roby announced him as the winner. Roby transferred Cole's power to Frak.

Later, Roby announced Nya and Nokt as the following two competitors. Roby explained the rules of the match, saying whoever got the majority of the three gems would win. The game began and the two started fighting. Nokt looked around for a gem and both him and Nya saw one appear. Nokt took the gem and earned a point. A few moments afterwards, they both saw a gem appear and Nya grabbed it. Nokt performed Shatterspin and Nya used Rising Dragon to counteract it. After more combat, Nya tried to take the last gem but it disappeared and reappeared next to Nokt. He got hold of it and Roby declared him the winner. Roby transferred Nya's water and lightning powers to Nokt.

Roby announced Sora and Cinder as the following two competitors. Roby explained that the competitors must solve puzzles to get to the end and win. The game began and Sora used her technology power to make a weapon, which she blasted Cinder with, knocking him out. Sora pulled the levers, causing the metal pillar in the center of the floating platform to drop and connect to the next platform. Cinder got up and Sora turned the weapon into a cage to trap him. Cinder puts on a Wolf Mask and Ras rang the Gong of Shattering, allowing the Master of Smoke to use Shatterspin. Sora inputted a simple code into a number lock, causing a rope to lower. She used it to swing over to the last platform. Cinder tried to stop her but fell into the fire below the platforms. She put the metal ball in the middle of the last platform and Roby declared her the winner. Roby transferred Cinder's Smoke and newly acquired Heat powers to Sora via the Elemental Cup.

The Sword Shatters[]

Roby announced Frak and Zur as the following two competitors. Bleckt rang the bell and the game began. Zur froze Frak in place and as he sank down, Cole reminded the latter how to use his Earth power. Frak successfully used the power to lift himself up and defeat Zur. Roby transferred Zur's Elemental Powers to Frak. Bleckt rang the bell and commenced the following game. Lloyd fought Arccrack and won easily while numerous Elemental Masters fought each other. This left Lloyd, Nokt, Zeatrix, Frak, and Sora in the Tournament.

Roby declared that he had planned a bonus game and announced Lloyd and Zeatrix as the two competitors. He explained that whoever knocked the other opponent off the platform with a weapon from the Gauntlet would win. The game commenced and both Zeatrix and Lloyd broke an obstacle in order to grab a weapon. Lloyd used the power of Size to avoid Zeatrix's attack. The two continued fighting, both clamored to grab a weapon while Lloyd was determined to grab the sword before Zeatrix used Figment, in an attempt to confuse Lloyd. He got Zeatrix to talk by comparing her to Beatrix, her twin sister, revealing which version of her was not a clone. Lloyd almost knocked her off the platform, but instead of landing the final blow, he went invisible using the power of Light and tried to look for the sword from his visions. Zeatrix found him using the power of Sound and created a bomb using the power of Surface Tension and Shockwave. Lloyd shot the bomb with Energy and the collision caused the floating platform to break. Roby called for a short intermission while the platform was being repaired.

The Security Bots fixed the broken platform and Bleckt rang the bell, recommencing the match. Zeatrix grabbed the sword while Lloyd grabbed a hammer and used it, along with the power of Size, to knock Zeatrix off the platform. Just as Roby declared Lloyd the winner, Zeatrix flew back up to the platform with the sword raised high. Sora tried to warn Lloyd, who confusingly turned around, only to be struck down, the sword shattered in the process. The hit knocked Lloyd off the platform and left him unconscious. Zeatrix gloated her ruthless action before getting arrested by the security bots.

Clues and Suspects[]

Roby announced Sora would be pitted against Frak. Roby explained that the first competitor to fall off the floating platforms would lose. The match began and while fighting, Sora asked Frak why he was on Ras' side. Frak tried to defend his master. Frak prepared to use a Wolf Mask and planned to do Shatterspin for the first time when he remembered Arin warning about using the Wolf Mask. This made him throw the mask away and he continued to fight honestly. Eventually, Frak fell off the arena and lost. Roby transferred the rest of his powers to Sora.

A while afterward, Roby announced Nokt and Lloyd as the next two fighters. Roby gave Zeatrix's powers to Lloyd with the Elemental Cup before the match commenced. Nokt and Lloyd fought when Bleckt yelled to stop the fight. He claimed Lloyd was too unwell to fight in the Tournament. Roby sadly agreed and Bleckt declared Nokt the winner by default. Roby transferred Lloyd's powers to Nokt.

The Final Game[]

Roby announced the final match. Sora faced off against Nokt and the battle began. Sora made the first move and tried to do Spinjitzu for the first time. She was able to perform a rudimentary version of it, as Arin had prior, but she soon found herself on the ground. Nokt started hammering the ground and suddenly began to perform Shatterspin. Sora blocked the attack with Ice. Then, she used Frak's Quake power on the ice spikes, followed by Zur's Reflex power to create a strong barrier against Nokt's Shatterspin. Nokt tried to attack but was knocked into the jumbotron. He got back up, and the fight continued fiercely. Sora attacked with all her strength, and as she was about to win the battle, part of the ground started to rise, dropping her guard. Nokt made a final attack and defeated Sora.

Just before Roby announced Nokt as the winner, Wyldfyre and Zur showed up with Bleckt’s ledger. They revealed that Bleckt had rigged the games in favor of the Wolf Clan. When Roby asked his uncle why he had done so, Bleckt furiously revealed it was because he thought Roby would have brought ruin to the games with his ideas. He conspired with Ras because the latter had promised to get rid of Roby so Bleckt could take his place as the new Games Master. This led to Roby canceling the ceremony and disqualifying Nokt, who retaliated by absorbing all the Elemental Powers contained within the Elemental Cup.

Elements of Betrayal[]

Nokt, Cinder, and the Wolf warriors started to attack Ras, the Elemental Masters, and the Security Bots. During the battle, Roby used the Elemental Cup to take the Elemental Powers from Nokt and return them to their original owners. Afterward, Roby honored the Ninja and voided Nokt's victory. He then declared Sora the default winner of the tournament and gave her a medal.

Trivia[]

  • This tournament is the second tournament in Ninjago, the first being the Tournament of Elements.
    • Coincidentally enough, both tournaments are participated in by Elemental Masters.
    • According to the Source Dragon of Motion, the Tournament of the Sources has led to the creation of similar events, indicating that there are various elemental tournaments across the Merged Realms. One notable example of these is Chen's Tournament of Elements.[7][8]
  • Of the 16 Elemental Powers used in the Tournament of Elements, 10 returned for the Tournament of the Sources, namely Energy, Lightning, Earth, Smoke, Light, Shadow, Poison, Form, Mind, Sound.
  • One is not required to use their Elemental Powers in order to participate in the Tournament of the Sources.[9]
  • Of the 16 competitors from the Tournament of Elements, only 7 of them returned for the Tournament of the Sources. These contestants are Lloyd, Cole, Jay, Mr. Pale, Tox, Neuro, and Chamille.
    • It is unknown why Skylor, Karlof, Gravis, Bolobo, and Griffin Turner were not present during the tournament.
      • Chris "Doc" Wyatt suggests that Bolobo's fate is uncertain,[10] just like Shade's, especially since at least one of them has died.[11]
      • Chris "Doc" Wyatt mentioned that the reasons for this could be that they either did not receive an invitation or, if they did, were unable to attend.[12]
  • While there were 28 known competitors in the tournament (excluding Zant-Tanz), if each elemental master would have had the same number of elements in battle, there would be 64 competitors. For example, when Zeatrix competed against Mord, she had already Shockwave, Wind, Sound and Figment. When fighting Lloyd, both masters would have 8 elements by then. Subsequently, Nokt would win 16 elements from Lloyd, having the final battle be Nokt and Sora, respectively having 32 elements each.
  • One does not need much experience with their elemental powers in order to receive an invite to participate in the Tournament of the Sources.[13]
  • In "They Gather for the Feast," it is revealed that guests and mentors of competitors are allowed to be in the City of Temples, which would explain why there are multiple background characters wearing Source Tournament tracksuits that aren't Elemental Masters.
  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated that the ninja would not be participating in any upcoming Tournament of the Sources in the future of Dragons Rising. He explained that the reason for this is the significant gap of time that exists between each tournament.[14][2]
    • The long interval between each tournament suggests that the Tournament of the Sources occurs at least once per generation. This is evidenced by the historical context in which Roby's father organized the Tournament of the Sources before Roby took over after his father's retirement.[15] Additionally, Lilly participated in the tournament preceding the one in which Cole competed.[4]
