What the Mech? is the first The Elemental Mechs short. It aired on January 6, 2024.
Synopsis[]
When some mysterious and dangerous Chronosteel is discovered in Ninjago, the ninja must find it before it falls into the wrong hands. What could possibly go wrong? Well, a lot actually. Don’t say we didn’t warn you![1]
Plot[]
Arin, Kai, and Sora are training on "Kai's Super Awesome Slide Course" when Cole appears riding a dragon. He tells the other ninja he needs help because a shipment of dangerous items, including Chronosteel, has arrived in Ninjago. Although Cole has no idea where the shipment went, Arin correctly guesses that it is at Kreel's Junkyard. After the ninja arrive at the junkyard, Lobbo mistakenly absorbs the energy from an electrical device, growing in size and displaying intense anger. While the other ninja fight Lobbo, Sora uses the Chronosteel to make mechs for Cole, Kai, and herself. They use the mechs to hold down Lobbo while Sora attempts to drain the power from him. Arin convinces Lobbo to accept the ninja’s help, which allows Sora to successfully drain Lobbo and he returns to normal. Kreel attempts to move the Chronosteel, but is stopped by Cole. As they take them away, Kai believes he could use some to improvise his slide, but reluctantly changed his mind upon the others glaring at him.

- Cole warning Sora, Arin and Kai about Chronosteel shipments is identical to how he warned Wu about Vengestone shipments in "Farewell the Sea."
- This marks the first appearance of Chronosteel in present time since "Lost in Time."
- Ray, Maya, Krux, Acronix, and the Time Blades are indirectly mentioned by Kai.
- This short marks the second time Kai has played off an activity as "Training" in the shorts. The first time was in "Flight of the Dragon Ninja" when he and the others flew their dragons around the Monastery and said "Well, technically riding your dragon is kind of training".
