These are the relationships of the Ninja Master, Wu.

Family[]

First Spinjitzu Master[]

“Boys, boys. You were both born with tremendous gifts. If you think you won't catch a fish, you won't. But if you have faith...well...”
— The First Spinjitzu Master, "The Gilded Path"
TheChild

Wu with his father, the First Spinjitzu Master

The First Spinjitzu Master was Wu and Garmadon's father, and his childhood master. While not much has been said of their relationship, it is clear that Wu loved his father very much and respected his great skill. The First Spinjitzu Master loved both his sons and made sure they were taught values and honor.

It is revealed his father's staff is the key to his tomb in "Winds of Change." This shows his father entrusted his son with this, though Wu was not aware of those symbols before Possession.

With Garmadon in the First Spinjitzu Master's room

On "Day of the Departed," at the destroyed monastery, Wu paid tribute to his father as a sign of respect.

During "The Gilded Path," Wu has a dream about his childhood where his father taught him and his brother to have patience and faith. Wu used the lesson as inspiration to lead the ninja and Faith to the Dragon Armor.

When Iron Baron tried to betray him, Wu revealed that he knew his father's pure heart is what allowed him to befriend Firstbourne and knew he didn't have to rely on armor.

Garmadon[]

“But know this, regardless of whatever path you choose, you will always be my brother.”
— Wu to Garmadon, Garmadon Issue 2
Wu&Garm

Wu and his older brother Garmadon.

Garmadon is Wu's older brother, with whom he was close to in their youth, and they always had each other's backs. This was best seen during the many times they aided each other in combat. Sadly, once Garmadon was bitten by the Great Devourer, the evils of the venom slowly corrupted him and caused him to blame Wu for it as the latter was distraught at this. Wu greatly regretted his indirect role in Garmadon's turn and blamed himself wholly.

They remained close, however, and though Wu didn't heed Garmadon's warning against entering Serpentine territory or trusting Aspheera, his brother was still willing to help him defeat her once she revealed her true intentions. The two remained a force against evil for countless years following the death of their father. The two brothers fought together in the Serpentine War and in fighting the Time Twins. After Garmadon finally succumbed to the Devourer's venom, he attempted to steal the Golden Weapons, and the two brothers came to blows, which ended in Garmadon being defeated and banished to the Underworld. Years later, Wu assembled a team of ninja to fight against him and his Skeleton Army.

After Garmadon was purified of his evil, he reconnected with his younger brother, and they were both fighting side by side once again, as the ninja's masters for a short time.

Young brothers

Once Chen told had Wu of Garmadon's past actions, Wu was infuriated at his brother's actions and declared him unworthy of being a master until Skylor put a stop to it. After that, Wu was silently hostile to his brother not bothering to speak to him at the cave, as Garmadon was sad at losing both him and Misako.

However, it appears that Wu had forgiven his brother as he quickly spoke against the latter's thoughts of banishing himself to the Cursed Realm to defeat Chen. This seemed to be the case as he proudly called Garmadon Lloyd's master, showing he had taken back his earlier statement that his brother was no master.

During Golden Hour, Wu's battle with the Time Twins took him back to the day where his brother was cursed. Wu stopped Acronix from picking up the sword that Garmadon was to retrieve, dreadfully stating while he'd love the chance to prevent his brother's corruption, he knew better to alter the timeline.

When Garmadon was resurrected by Harumi, a de-aged Wu sensed his brother approaching to destroy him and was shaken enough to alert Misako. He was also shielded from his mad brother until he and the Ninja were transported to the Realm of Oni and Dragons.

Wu battles his brother.

During "The Gilded Path," Wu has a dream about his childhood where his father taught him and his brother to have patience and faith. Wu recalled his brother being frustrated at his success. Wu also wanted to return to Ninjago where he hoped to free it from Garmadon's tyrannical rule.

During "Green Destiny," Wu returned to Ninjago, and Garmadon sensed him, realizing he was alive. Wu confronted his brother with Lloyd, and they fight as Garmadon declares them as his enemies. Wu tried to talk sense into him, to stop his madness but Garmadon mocked Wu by saying that just because he has their father's sword does not mean he is their father's equal. Despite this, however, Garmadon did not bother to finish off Wu, instead of continuing to engage Lloyd.

They later reunited to face the Oni and parted ways on a good note after the conflict.

After the destruction of the Overlord, the brothers were seen rebuilding the Monastery, seemingly on good terms.

Lloyd[]

“Lloyd, my student, my nephew. I hope you do a better job than I have when you become master of this monastery. Remember, family is key.”
— Wu to Lloyd, "The Merge: Part 2"
MoS4Goodnight

Young Lloyd and his uncle Wu

Wu is Lloyd's paternal uncle and Master. Lloyd and the other ninja cared about Master Wu and are glad to have Wu as their teacher. Wu looked after Lloyd when he was little which showed that Wu cared about his nephew. Lloyd always loved and respected Wu as his uncle and Master.

During Season 7, Lloyd and his friends came to Wu's aid when he fought Acronix and was distraught as Wu was wounded by the villain. In "Scavengers," Lloyd was sad that may have failed his uncle when he needed help fighting Acronix, and Lloyd wanted to make sure he doesn't fail him again, so he looked after him when he was injured and continued to work harder in his training to become a master. When Lloyd infiltrated the Time Twins' base, he went out of his way to save the captive Wu but lost him to the Vermillion. When Wu was lost in time with the Time Twins, the ninja made Lloyd their master and he said his first order as their master was to get rid of the time blade and find out where Wu was.

Wu and Lloyd

During Season 8, they were unknowingly reunited when Wu came back as a baby. Lloyd was unaware of this until Harumi betrayed him and revealed this fact to him, and he couldn't believe that his uncle was the infant the whole time. After he reunited with his friends, Lloyd spent more time with the de-aged Wu and wondered when he would return to normal.

When a resurrected Garmadon attacked the city, Lloyd protected his infant uncle from harm and refused to let Harumi take him. Despite Lloyd's actions, uncle and nephew would be separated once more after the ninja and Wu are sent to another realm. Lloyd was unaware of this and believes his uncle is dead along with his friends.

Lloyd asks Wu for help with questing for quests.

However, Lloyd later learned the truth of his uncle's status from Mystake and was happy to hear he was alright.

In "Green Destiny," Wu is reunited with his nephew and quickly comes to rescue by fighting off the Sons of Garmadon with the ninja's aid. Lloyd was amazed that Wu was almost back to normal but is still in his right mind. Wu even assured him that he still had him without his powers and helped his student in fighting his father before he was forced out of the fight. Wu was later happy to see Lloyd has regained his powers and defeated Garmadon in battle. In the end, Wu became an old man again and acknowledged Lloyd as a fellow master once peace was restored.

Misako[]

“I-I made a mistake. An error of judgment. I should have told you I loved you before you went to...”
MoS52SavedHim

Wu and Misako

In his younger years, Wu had many affections for her and it seemed they were reciprocated but Misako fell in love with Wu's brother Garmadon. Wu did not object to their union, despite his heavy feelings for her and accepted Misako's choice as well her into the family.

They met again after Garmadon's evil fully corrupted him, the two get along very well and often share jokes as Misako once remarked she should have married Wu while dealing with Garmadon's evil. While it looked like they would be a couple again, Misako's love for Garmadon was maintained and she along with Lloyd reconnected with him as Wu was happy to see them as a family again.

It is revealed in "Spellbound," that in his youth Wu had written Misako a love letter but, Chen had intercepted it and had Garmadon (who felt the same) write his name on it, which caused her to fall in love with him. The two were unaware of this act until Chen revealed it and they were devastated by this news and angry at Garmadon for committing the act. They got closer in that time but both showed that they still loved Garmadon as they were against his choice of banishing himself to the Cursed Realm.

Wu hugging Misako

Following the Second Serpentine War and Garmadon's sacrifice, they are often paired up and closer than before with occasional smiles and intimate talks between them on missions. During Season 7, when faced with a nightmare revealing his greatest failures, Wu showed that he still regretted not telling Misako his feelings more directly before she went to his brother instead.

In Season 8, it is revealed by Lloyd that Misako had gone off to find Wu (after he was lost in time) at some point in the year between seasons. In "Dread on Arrival," it is mentioned by Harumi that Misako was successful in locating him before they were captured by the Sons of Garmadon.

Following their subsequent separation and Garmadon's revival, they remain close companions.

Wu seems to have respect for Misako and is a little afraid of her, and she has the power to influence him, as it turns out when she ordered him to go to Shintaro. But even after unintentionally making her mad, Misako's judgement proved to be correct as her insistence revived his adventurous spirit.

Wu also showed exceptional feelings for her when he was willing to fight Kalmaar, even though Ray, Kai and Cole were in danger, but only gave up when Kalmaar threatened to kill Misako.

In Tommy Andreasen's opinion, they have been in a romantic relationship since the Second Serpentine War.[1][2]

Students[]

Morro (formerly)[]

You are all my prized pupils, but none of us can do this alone. You're strong, Morro, but it takes others to make us stronger. Even me.”
— Wu to Morro, "Curseworld, Part II"
MoS46GreenSuit

Wu with his first student

Morro was Wu's first pupil, Wu found Morro after he and a few other children were rummaging through the monastery's trash bins. Taking pity on him, Wu invited him to live in the monastery and learn the ways of the ninja, an offer that was accepted by the child. Wu later discovered that Morro was the elemental master of Wind and thought he was the next Green Ninja.

However, this was not the case as Morro would become more arrogant at the opportunity to have such amazing power. Wu soon saw the true depths of his error in judgment as the Golden Weapons did not choose him, meaning that he was not the chosen one. Wu tried to comfort him but Morro set out to prove destiny and his master wrong, this proved to be a fatal mistake as he would die on his journey, much to Wu's sadness.

Morro later came back to Wu as a Ghost and possessed the true Green Ninja Lloyd who was also Wu's nephew. The two became enemies with them clashing in their encounters with Morro blaming his old master for his fate and Wu defending his choices. Despite this, Wu tried to save Morro from death after the Preeminent started to drag him down into the water. However, Morro saw the error of his ways and simply resigned himself to his fate but not before giving Wu the Realm Crystal and bidding him farewell. Wu was very devastated at seeing his pupil die having a sad look on his face.

Wu and Morro reunited

In "Day of the Departed," Morro is resurrected and meets his old master at the ruins of the monastery. Wu was shocked to see him again but told him that while he was pained they would have to fight again, he won't hesitate to do so. However, he was shocked to hear that Morro had no intention of fighting him but instead came to warn him about Yang's plans. Wu later defended Morro from being attacked by the ninja and told them Morro came to help as the latter told the ninja of what Yang was planning. As Wu had the ninja go stop the evil master, he thanked Morro for his actions as his redeemed pupil bade him farewell and returned to the Departed Realm at peace.

Despite making peace with his fallen pupil, it is shown in Season 7 that Wu is still haunted by guilt and reminded of the path his former student went down as he had nightmares about Morro blaming him for his fate.

Kai (formerly)[]

“Master Wu, don't. I'm sorry I was angry. We all make mistakes. But giving yourself over to Aspheera would be another one. She can't be trusted. She'll still be dangerous and on the loose and—besides all that, we're family. We stick together. No matter what.”
— Kai to Wu, "Under Siege"

During Season 11, Kai criticized his master after hearing of his past in teaching Aspheera the way of Spinjitzu and causing him to lose his powers to her and gave him the cold shoulder. Despite that, Kai refused to let him sacrifice himself to her, just to protect him and the others.

Mystake[]

“I'm sorry to hear about Master Wu. He was a dear friend.”
— Mystake about Wu, "The Oni and the Dragon"

Despite being allies with Wu in the Serpentine War[3] and thinking of him as a "dear friend",[4] Mystake treated Wu in a callous way, as if he were a stranger, in their interactions in seasons 1 and 2.

When returning to Ninjago in "Green Destiny," Wu inquired on her and was sad to hear she had fallen in battle.

With the mother of Dragons helping, Wu and his pupils were able to return to Ninjago City. Firstbourne helped Wu in overcoming the Sons of Garmadon and his brother.

They met when he was a child, she liberated him and his brother from imprisonment by the Serpentine, on the condition that they help her in the future. Wu later came to uphold his promise and the two became friends when he taught her Spinjitzu. However, Garmadon warned him to not trust her and Wu didn't believe it until he learned that she overthrew her king and was launching an invasion of Ninjago. This event led to Wu believing his brother and asked for his aid in defeating the serpent sorceress and her Pyro Vipers. Wu showed no remorse in defeating her and stated to her of how she deceived him, as well as leaving her to be sealed in a pyramidal tomb for a thousand years. Despite that, Wu took her warning of getting revenge on him to heart.

For his supposed betrayal, Aspheera has gained a dislike for him and wanted to exact revenge on him. To this end, she plunged all of Ninjago in disaster and told them to bring the "traitorous deceiver" to her. Wu also revealed to the ninja, that his befriending Aspheera was his greatest mistake.

When they finally met again, she voiced on how she dreamed of confronting him and was nearly successful but thanks to the interference of the ninja Aspheera was defeated though at the cost of Zane.

In "Vengeance is Mine!," Wu visited her while she was imprisoned, where he expressed disgust at her actions but she revealed that she never sought to destroy him but make him feel her pain by banishing him to the Never-Realm as she did Zane. Despite not banishing Wu, Aspheera took pleasure in knowing that she caused him great distress with his pupil's fate and laughed at how he could never get him back.

Time Twins (former allies)[]

“As you said, Acronix, it ends now.”
— Wu to the Time Twins, "Lost in Time"
NINJAGO Reimagined 10

A de-aged Wu fighting the Time Twins

Wu was once good allies with them in the Serpentine War, though enmity formed between them after they decided they should rule Ninjago. Wu and his brother fought them together and they stole their enemies' powers, which they trapped in the blades and threw them in a Temporal vortex. Wu watched as his foes went after them but he saw they'd return. Forty years later, Wu awaited the confrontation before he fought Acronix but had his age rapidly after being struck by the latter. As he suffered, Wu regretted that he didn't tell his pupils to help and felt guilty for not taking care of them sooner. The Time Twins soon abducted him and used Wu as leverage against Kai and Nya, they mocked his situation even after the ninja complied they had refused to cure him after what he and his brother put them through as an act of final revenge.

After being cured by his students, Wu got his revenge on the twins by confronting them with his students. The twins were greatly shocked by his return and fought him again. When Wu saw the aftermath of the villains' actions on his friend Ray and nearly watched them kill Kai and Nya, he decided to finally put an end to them by sabotaging the Iron Doom. Wu's act greatly shocked and infuriated the twins, as he chose to stay behind to finally end their conflict.

Wu then fought both of his foes for the last time, even while suffering from de-aging and preventing them from changing history as they traveled through time. When he was ultimately turned into a child, Wu was able to defeat the twins by destroying the Iron Doom and stranding them in the vortex, thereby avenging the actions done onto him and his friends by their hands. After being turned into a baby, Wu left the Time Twins behind in the vortex while he was able to escape.

Samukai[]

“Sensei Wu! Your Spinjitzu looks rusty!"
"Nothing like bone to sharpen its edge, Samukai.”
— Samukai and Wu, "Way of the Ninja"

Wu and Samukai came into conflict years ago, though Wu along with his brother Garmadon defeated the skeleton warrior.

Wu met Samukai again in "Weapons of Destiny," where he challenged his old foe to a final rematch, with Master Wu armed with the Sword of Fire while he himself wielded the remaining Golden Weapons. Despite Wu's best efforts, Samukai ultimately reigned victorious and proceeded to claim the Sword of Fire, even as the ninja arrived to witness Garmadon's triumph. Fortunately, Samukai's wielding of the Golden Weapons caused the latter to explode.

Because Wu helped Cole in saving the other ninja from the Hunters, Baron despised him and chased him and the ninja.

When they met face to face, Baron wasted no time in attacking Wu but Faith saved him. Baron then discovered that Wu was the son of the First Spinjitzu Master, he was very shocked and focused his entire hunt to capture Wu instead since the latter was quarter Oni.

Wu was later captured by Baron along with the ninja after they tried to save Faith. He broke free and fought Baron and his hunters but the latter offered him a deal to locate the Dragon Armor and he will free the ninja. Wu agreed to this and led Baron to the path of the item.

Along the journey, Wu was disgusted by Baron's reason of lying to the Hunters, despite that Wu saved him from falling and was met with ungratefulness from him. After they located the armor, Baron revealed he was lying the whole time and ordered the dragons to kill Wu who was not surprised but explained to Baron that he lied as well since the armor did not allow his father to control the Firstbourne, but sensed his good heart. Wu watched as Firstbourne attacked Baron and encased him in molten rock.
