- This article is about the promise of love. For other uses, see Yin-Yang (disambiguation).
The Yin-Yang promise is a sacred tradition practiced by the people of Ninjago. A piece of a medallion with one half of the yin-yang symbol is presented to a romantic partner, signifying their promise to be one with each other forever.
History[]
The Darkness Comes[]
Jay practices his Yin-Yang to Kai, but he says that he is doing it wrong. When Dareth comes in, Kai tells him, much to Jay's disliking.
Into the Breach[]
Cole finds out about the Yin-Yang and gives Jay advice, though he unintentionally compares Nya to an old bandage. Later, Jay tries to start the Yin-Yang but is spooked by Garmadon.
Endings[]
Not wanting to put it off when the Oni prepare to infiltrate the monastery, Jay proposes his Yin-Yang to Nya, who accepts.
Queen of the Munce[]
Jay mentions it when he introduces Nya to Queen Murtessa.
Distress Calls[]
Nya mentions it when Jay tries to get her to send a message to Benthomaar.
Trivia[]
- The Yin-Yang promise was previously stated to not be the Ninjago equivalent of a marriage proposal and a separate love-related custom unique to Ninjago,[1][2] but it is later said to, at least, be something very similar as when Murtessa asks if Jay is betrothed, Nya says "Yes! He is! To me!"[3] and in an "interview" written by Tommy Andreasen, Nya states that it is "pretty much an engagement".[4]
- It is treated similarly to a marriage proposal, such as in "Into the Breach" when Kai asks Jay "Did you pop the question yet?", which means to propose.
- Tommy Andreasen has stated, "Foreign customs are often hard to grasp. It’s clearly a love thing."[5] When asked if there was a ceremony associated with the promise, he stated, "I don’t know. If we ever decide and is relevant it will be in the show."[6]
- It is currently unknown what happens to the Yin-Yang promise when the couple breaks up.
- Tommy Anderson stated that "Yang in Ninjargan is equivalent to 'better half'. So, a person is always Yin to their Yang."[7]
